Yes! This was a great comparison, thank you! Good production, too - I can actually hear what you're saying!! ;P I am a total noob to making electronic music (but am a long-time guitarist, but I'm guessing "electric" guitar doesn't count here! ;)), and I've spent my last 2 days off basically researching the history of EM and all the gear (I'm a total guitar gear nut/afficianado, but knew stuff-all about synths etc ... the nearest I've been in the past, being Moog pedals ...). My head is swimming with references like TR-808, TR-08, TR-8 ... ... ARGHHHH!! ;D ... As with guitar amps etc, the classic units are classics for a reason ... Anyway, I like the JP-08 and the JU-06 (BASS and filter!) best; the JX-03 seems a bit too edgy/grating for my tastes, though I realise that's probably great/desirable for certain things, cutting through the mix, as with certain sounds in the guitar-world that don't sound great in a bedroom, but cut/work in a mix ... I'm starting with ZERO (synth/EM) gear, and to get acquainted with the gear with a view to creating my own music, I'd like to work on some recreations of Prince songs ... Please, do you have any tips/advice regarding current gear (and/or affordable 'vintage' gear) that would suit/help me get close to some of his sounds? Did he tend to use certain makes/models? I doubt I could afford an LM-1, even if I could find one ... ! ;) In any case, thanks again for this great comparison video! Peace!
Roland really know their shit! To everyone who has dismissed the whole boutique range as nothing but toys, videos like this shows you how "analog" these GREAT little units sound! A good condition Jupiter 8 will set you back 7/8000 English pounds!! Don't get me wrong, the 8 was great, but reliability?? Always had problems. A jp for just over the £300 mark.....(and it won't break down on you).... SOLD!! 🕶
dukeofpearl glad you enjoyed the video. I have some nice analog synthetic, including a Juno 106, and these units hold their own. They sound really good
I'm a total noob, but they sounded best/seemed most complimentary in terms of sounds, to me ... though I guess the appeal of the JX-03 is the bite/cut (of what I'd call a rougher, edgier sound)? So, they really are all complimentary to each other, it seems to me?
Mamãe aos 80 they are great sounding but I couldn’t splurge to buy , I hated how small the knobs / sliders are , felt toy like. I think I’ll just pick up a sytstem 8 on the used market
I had a Juno-60 way back when, someone basically gave it to me, and then like an idiot, I ended up selling it for pretty cheap a few years later. I've regretted that ever since. I even had the sequencer for it. The JU-06 sounds the best to my ears, but I'm biased when it comes to Roland analog synths. I have a broken HS-60 sitting here that I haven't gotten around to doing anything with yet. I don't know anything about repairing vintage analog synths. But I'm definitely going to pick up a JU-06, it sounds too good not to get for the price. I kind of wish they had modeled it after the 60 instead of the 106, as the 60 sounds just a little better to my ears, but I think in the right mix they're about equal. There are so many awesome synths available right now, it's driving me crazy. I like your setup and of course I'm a bit envious of it. :) Nice video, and thanks!
Good comparison of the sounds of the filters. It would have been interesting if you'd also added the fourth filter to the comparison... i.e. what the JP-08 sounds like in its 24 mode.
Cool comparison video. Real useful. Been considering getting 1, and by extension wondering which would be _the_ 1 to get. This did much to highlight their differences.
They all have their uses. JP is most complex and deep for evolving stuff and weird things. JU is the simplest and quickest to just get a great sound out of. JX is somewhere in between. Not very complex, but still good sounding. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
Andrew Harrington I'm not a fan of the voice allocation where you have two units in chain mode. It's not implemented well so 8-note polyphony, with a few issues. I think unless you are doing a whole lot of work with chords that use more than 4 voices, you're better off with two different units.
Hi E. M. First of all Just say I ´m followin you, a subscribed one, learnin´ from you, my JU-06 sounds not that good, that loud , I guess it´s my mixer even it´s a Mackie Onyx but it seems to be a little bit ... broken . What mixer do you use at that video ? and Audio interface ? Thank you very much ! & sorry about my english.
ju 06 is nice. filter steps a lot but whatever, it's still musical. I dismissed this range at first but it seems many companies are going for a cheaper but decent range and basing roland on these was obvious. too obvious for many
I have a small wooden rack they fit in nicely. You can theoretically poly chain two different units but you only get the note overflow sent to the second unit and none of the patch info
+UpperSpaceRecording yes it will play a different sound. I have tried it. Hooked the JU and JP together. They each play whatever sound they are currently on and the parameters don't affect the second unit as they do if you have two of the same unit
Hi everyone, my piano doesn't have pitch/modulation wheels. If I connect the boutique out midi to the in midi on my piano,Will I be able to use the boutique pitch/mod slider feature while I just play off my piano? Also will it reduce the pianos polyphony? :c
Do you know if it will deduct the polyphony while using my midi 88 key piano? because I just want to use the ribbons while playing on my 88piano. Thanx and nice video
Deported Caveman I'm not sure I understand. The Boutiques will always have 4-note polyphony even if your piano has more. The ribbon has no effect on polyphony
Thank you for sharing this video. It helped me make my choice on geting all 4. =)
O soo you did not stockpile it as maybe inventory?
Good, straight forward comparison. I bet this will help a lot of folks.

So true
Great video again! Nice comparision. I own JP08 and im really into buying JU06 as well, thoose modules are really just powerfull. :)

Thx for the video!! Great. I think that most of the people really don't yet understand what Roland have created... let's wait to see.

Adam Baldwin thanks Adam! Yeah the JU does sound great. I still have my Juno 106 and the JU is very very close. They did a nice job
Agreed!
Roland have u heard and release JU06A)
Good comparison of the sounds of the filters. It would have been interesting if you'd also added the fourth filter to the comparison... i.e. what the JP-08 sounds like in its 24 mode.
SLHkeyboards I thought about that after. lol

So two JU's ran together for 8 note polyphony? Or A JP and a JU? DECISIONS

Very informative video! Thanks for making and sharing it!
Glad to see you here Ralph! I'm a fan of your new channel
soooo good. thank you VERY much
The Junos have 24 db filters. Why putting the Jp-08 into 12 db mode?
Thanks for comparison, suprise of the difference in resonance filter! Cool. So which synth are you playing the most with? :P
They all fart very differently
Wow cool comparison! Thanks for sharing :D
thanks, this is great

amazing video. thank you for this
Thanks! Very helpful
What do you hold your boutiques in there?
ju 06 is nice. filter steps a lot but whatever, it's still musical. I dismissed this range at first but it seems many companies are going for a cheaper but decent range and basing roland on these was obvious. too obvious for many
I heard neither of these units have an arpeggiator. If I have an arpieggator on my keyboard, would that work?
caddood it will if your synth sends the arpeggiator MIDI notes out
Great video ,thank u. How did you physicaly fix them in line so the are stable ? And can u polychan 2 different models?
I have a small wooden rack they fit in nicely. You can theoretically poly chain two different units but you only get the note overflow sent to the second unit and none of the patch info
+Earmonkey Music so it would play a different sound? I thought it just uses to processor of the second unit and continues with the same sound question
+UpperSpaceRecording yes it will play a different sound. I have tried it. Hooked the JU and JP together. They each play whatever sound they are currently on and the parameters don't affect the second unit as they do if you have two of the same unit
+Earmonkey Music thank you for answering this, i had thought you could chain any and get more voices by processing power
thanks!
Hi everyone, my piano doesn't have pitch/modulation wheels. If I connect the boutique out midi to the in midi on my piano,Will I be able to use the boutique pitch/mod slider feature while I just play off my piano? Also will it reduce the pianos polyphony? :c
Deported Caveman Yes. You can still use the ribbons on the units while you control them from your MIDI keyboard
Since I'll be using just my piano for playing and the boutique for its slider ribbons. Will my piano become 4 polyphony instead of 192 polyphony?
Deported Caveman the polyphony of your piano won't be affected.
envelope follow is keyboard tracking?
I didn't say that well. I meant envelope modulating the filter cutoff.
Thanks for the vid
