To K&N or not K&N, that is the question.

  • I recently got a K&N air filter for the bike. I've used them numerous times in the past, but now I am thinking that it may not be prudent for this bike.
    So in this video I will talk a bit about the various air filters available and the pros and cons of each. Lastly I'll let you know whether I am going to use the K&N or not.

    I run the Sprint Air Filter P08 406596 in my 2019 Speed Triple RS. I have my bike Brentuned. I have 23,500 miles on her.

      Is the Sprint air filter a paper element filter?

      I believe it is a cotton filter; you clean it with compressed air. Brentune suggested it. @@scottsspeedtriplechannel

      To understand the why's of that comment from your mechanic, ya have to dive deeper into the analysis of it. K&N uses a more porous material meaning it does not catch as much micro particles as a stock one might. Hence the reason for the red oily treatment in the element. This also allows more air thru, which in a CV Carb setup might not be best due to leaning out the fuel air mixture. Even more so with Fuel Injection in some applications. Personally I stopped using ALL K&n Products after having the nut of an oil filter crack off on the track and nearly causing a crash coming out of turn 4 of a track. When K&N sent their manufacturing to China the product reliability went to hell. IF they eve come back to the US with high standards I might go back to the oil filters, but, not bloody likely.

      Thanks. I like my ability to protect myself and family. 2A all the way.
      As far as the air filter stuff goes, I've used them in most all the bikes I've owned too. Just changed my mind this time around.

      @@anonimous2451 I never heard of that before, but I have seen a lot of guys drill through the nut to safety wire it. That could possibly cause that to happen.
      I still use K&N oil filters sometimes though.

      @@scottsspeedtriplechannel Well it happened to me and back at the pits I had to remove my Fu*kin underpants cause I nearly sharded myself to death when it DID happen. The after event analysis showed the metal around the nut da slanties thinned it out so bad it lost its strength. I'm just thank God I never went down but it was so near to happening it was scary as hell when you get oil on the back tire. THAT is for SURE. I'M SURE WE ALL HAVE OUR EXPERIENCIES BUT AFTER THAT ONE i LEFT K&N PERMANENTLY. And honestly give no fu*ks if you use their products or not. I NEVER will again.

      I think you may have misunderstood my reply. I didn't doubt that it happened, I simply have never heard of that before.
      I only mention the drilling of the nut because I have seen it so many times.
      I spent over ten years working east coast tracks as an AMA certified safety marshal and have seen my fair share of crashes. Six deaths on track. Never is a manufacturing defect a good thing whether it causes an accident or not.
      I truly am glad you are OK. I hope you are still enjoying track days or racing, whichever you are doing.

    If you were to change the filter then you should get it mapped also otherwise the bike could run lean 👍

      @scottsspeedtriplechannel  Před 10 měsíci

      That is true. I've changed to K&Ns on several other bikes without remapping and had no issues though. I honestly don't think that the "high flow" air filters make that big a difference in air volume until you start making full exhaust changes though.
