The original game campaign with Helms Deep and Minas Tirith battles are some of my favorite gaming childhood memories. Truly epic as the movies.
I always saved the movie based missions with opening and ending cutscenes for each campaign in the 1st game. So I could replay those epic battles.
They even added a siege of Edoras for the evil campaign. Awesome.
@@HawnixArtistry U right, u right. Siege of Edoras is great as "what if" the evil side was wining. However, I played good campaign much more because of the heroes. Legolas is op and Gandalf is on that next lvl shit.
@@powerofberzerker9487 Oh absolutely! I was a much bigger fan of the good campaign than the evil campaign, however fun the evil was in a what-if type of scenario. The heroes were definitely better for the good side.
I also hated how incredibly unbalanced the evil armies were in the first game. Mordor is supposed to be a powerhouse and they were actually the weakest out of the 4 armies. They had a good diversity of units, but none of them were upgradable. Gondor, Rohan, and Isengard were all fully upgradeable. I had to use Isengard for most of the evil campaign just to be able to progress lol.
@@HawnixArtistry same i would make a few saves just for those battles
I remember playing helms deep in an online match and my maxed out witch king duking it out with Sauron on the wall in the middle of a massive battle. Good times and a ton of memories.
For me this game was and is a masterpiece
I spent more than 300hours in it
As a Tolkien fan it pleased me alot
Awesome! Even as not a huge LoTR fan, I loved it. Can imagine how much cooler it would be to be more invested in it!

You forgot to mention that if you play on skirmish mode, you can find Gollum running around the map, and if you kill him the One Ring drops, walk over it with a unit to pick it up and bring it to your castle. After that you can summon either Sauron or Galadriel depending on if you are good or evil.

The BFME Anthology is one of the best video game series ever IMO, especially if you are a Tolkien fan & an RTS fan. I absolutely love these games and they were gems for their time and they are still gems today. I spent and still spend so many hours playing the most epic battles with these games, and the fact that there are mods being made by full teams in 2019 is even better. The Edain and Ages of the Ring mods are incredible and vastly detailed. They're practically whole new games that just took everything about the base games and improved upon them. I really wish that they would remake or remaster these or release them digitally so they were able to be played by everyone. I know they won't due to licensing issues, but the demand for these games to be played again is very high especially on Steam and GOG.
I love these games so much and I don't ever want to lose him that I actually have my own copies plus backup copies of the original discs and I always want to make sure I have a slightly older yet great running computers to be able to play them. These are games that I don't ever want to lose.
Damn all your reviews bring me back to my childhood it hurts. Great video nonetheless
Appreciate it! It's a good hurt though right? :D
@@Zade_95 Makes me miss the days I snuck up to play on my dads comp. Also do you have a community discord?
I realize that Total War: Warhammer (1 and 2) filled a void that this game left to begin with.
I've owned this since it's release and I still pay it today, in fact I played it this afternoon
This game (expansion included) and Age of Empires 3 were the games I played the most during my primary school years. I replayed the campaigns for those games for hours. Spent much time on the special siege maps - you get to defend the castles and cities of the films ( Minas Tirith, Helms Deep, Minas Morgul) I loved the Lotr films so recreating those battles was awesome. I owned the collectors edition for Battle for Middle Earth as well as the Gold edition for Age of Empires 3... Then Dota came into my life and I wasted my time with that. My grades suffered in university, but it might be more because of my own arrogance and laziness than any video game, or the fact that I had no passion for what I was studying (even hated it at times, still do). Perhaps I'm just looking for excuses -who knows lol. Either way my parents forced me to get rid of my boxed pc games as a result. It pains me greatly my weakness cost me those awesome collector's boxes and all the other pc games of my childhood , including a disk copy of Age of Empires 1, which can be hard to come by now. My sad story for random people on the Internet to read.
Anyway some neat features in BFME that you didn't mention: 1. By holding right click you could drag out your army in formation like in Total War. I wasn't aware of Total War at the time so i thought it was a innovative feature, same with Ctrl+A that allowed you to select your entire army across the map.
2. The more remarkable features ( kinda surprised you didn't mention this) is the ability to create a custom hero. The options where quite limited but the idea of creating your own character to interact with in the Lotr universe was quite appealing at the time.
Dang dude, that's rough. At least you've got those (mostly) happy memories to think back to, that's most important.
I thought I tried the unit dragging, maybe not. Yeah I totally forgot about the custom hero! I made one and everything and didn't even put it in...smh
One of the greatest RTS game series made to date. And throw in the mods and player created maps you can play on and it’s a game you can come back to time and time again.
Pretty darn good game. I played THE WITCH KING nonstop for about a year! The Take Over the World mode was endless fun!
Most satisfying thing is when you are playing defender as in helms deep and rohan army come and that fealing when you click flag : o...
i feel u m8 ;)
Bfme modder here, I would definitely recommend all of the games to play, considering you can download them all for free and you can play online with game ranger, even with mods, you really have nothing to lose trying it out

This is one of my most favorite games ever. I played the shit out of it during my teenage years. Obviously better than its predecessor which confined you in bases and camps. In BFME2 you are free to build and expand as you like. To my eyes, this game had amazing graphics for its day. I still remember my computer struggling when I maxed out shadows and shaders.
Also, "Pride of the Dwarves" is one of the best music soundtracks EVER. I'm very pleased you showcased it. The pick-axe sound effect gets me every time!
Very nice video and good work. Thanks for the nostalgia rush.
Oh Lord, I've never played this! Yet I absolutely loved the books and movies. Thank you for bringing this gem to my attention.
Play 2.02 for a better basic game, and Age of the Ring for a great mod experience!
Enjoy!
Shocked to see content for this game. All time favorites. My original disks from it are treasured possessions, and the only reason my PC has a disk drive. I played so much of this online until the official servers went down. I loved the community made Helm's Deep morning light (2v4) map. Never before or since have I seen an RTS truly capture an epic siege.
Damn imagine a LotR Total war game!!
Third Age Total War exist, and it's amazing
I'm really surprised it was never attempted tbh especially with how much everyone lost their shit over that franchise
@@Batchall_Accepted It was. There are mods for Medieval 2.
What I liked about those games was that they didn't copy well established rts games. At least in too many aspects. There are many unique mechanics. It doesn't feel like AOE with a different skin.
Been playing this game on and off since bfme 1 such a great game. And with the age of the ring mod it just steps this game up to new heights for me !
Maybe you could speak about a very old game, from Cavedog, doesn't exist anymore, it's Total Annihilation Kingdoms, it has one expansion pack which I don't remember the name, the story is about one great king, the greatest, who had 4 kids, who has each a certain type, like water and life, fire and death, wilderness, or ground and mechanics, the story mode take us to a trip where we used each faction, Veruna, Taros, Zhon and Amon. It's quite difficult to get it nowadays, but oh boys it was a good rts, with lots of maps and a creator map. The ressources we gathered is Mana through manatite, or mana-stone we placed on specific location. But enough talking about this game, I'll let you find out how it works :).
Also, great video about my childhood video game, I've figured it out to install it and being able to play again *_*.
Me who spent years saddened because my copy of the collector's edition didn't work one day, years later getting a gaming PC and one of the first things I got was a rom of Witch king and the original version: "Middle-Earth 2... My old friend :) "
It might be a bit soon to return to the fantasy RTS well, but 'Armies of Exigo' is an old RTS I remember fondly.
Never heard of it - I'll look it up!
Yo that actually looks pretty legit lol. Kind of like a Warcraft 3 with way more restrained art style :P
What, no mention of he ring hero stystem or custom hero’s?
Spent so much time just making my own heroes and feeling happy about it. Even the ones from The Third Age made it in as usable and being a fan of that game just made BFME:2 so much more awesome. Life was so much simpler back then. :(
Another game I want to play now, wish I could play this and/or Rise of Legends.

This game was amazing and I spent so much time playing it. I was so sad when the servers went down but thankfully it is still possible to play on gamespy.
Gameranger works too I think! Yeah I had a blast
The most memorable thing in the game for me was the reoccurring bug where if you kill an Urukai berserker with fire arrows, there is a chance for a bug to occur where the berserker does not die even if it says it has no more health, preceding to kill everything on the whole map.
I remember already being awesome at this game in multiplayer and still long after that learning little nuance details. Not everyone knew that your troops moved slightly faster when on roads, for example. This game was a Masterpiece. I loved Mordor on default money start. Fear to hold the enemy back until you could get to industry and flaming catapults. Then you come roaring out after being near destruction, and annihilate the enemy. Awesome play style.
Thoughts on Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds?
Good video btw
Love it! Will definitely see a video on it one day :)
I can't express how much i love the game. It was literally the first game i ever played...From when i was 8 to the age of 12...And i came back to the game again at 17...And now im 20 and I can't wait for the REFORGED version.
Battel of Middle Earth 1 and 2 along with a dawn of war were games of my childhood
My dad and I are still playing this game the past 3 years. And my young nieces love it!
I originally played this game on Xbox with my cousin years ago. And then I got a pc version and now my cousin and I are working hard so we can play it together again. This game has brought me so many good memories.

There is an overhaul for the game still in progress (BFME2 Reforged). There were other mods as well that completely overhauled the game from base building which hearkens back to BFME 1 to combat. This is very Nice to hear.
The Edain Mod, particularly Version 4.0 and onwards
The one you quoted for overacting is the Mouth of Sauron, also voiced by the same guy who did in the movie (Roger Jackson).
Oh, and small trivia, the actir who played character is Bruce Spence, the only one who starred in almost all box office-hit trilogies, like Mad Max, Star Wars, Matrix and Lord of the Rings :)
I have fond memories of playing this game growing up, though I never owned it on PC.
On that note: it’s worth mentioning that there is an Xbox 360 version of this game as well, though without the expansion or patches (as far as I know), which is the version I owned.
Interesting! I did hear it was on Xbox but never tried it or had the opportunity too. Its PC for me!
This game is one of those games EA made before they became shit, BFME anyone of they are absolute masterpieces, 14 years after its release and I’ll still consider it among among my top five games, ranking with Witcher, Mass Effect 3, Bloodborne, and Modern Warfare 2
I'm a big dwarf fan, even in Warhammer.
And the fact, that in this game they have the most epic music and badass heroes is awesome!

Fun fact: the voice actor for Lurtz also played an orc in the indi movie Dragonfyre. A fun movie too, in my opinion.
for the people interested there is also BFME:reforged project which wants to mix bfme 1 and 2 and remake them in UE4
One mod Arcade Edition so much fun with no limits

One of my favorite games when I was younger
Thanks heaps for linking the install instructions, they worked perfectly first time. Its such an amazing game. And thanks for the video, i hope it encourages more people to play. My first log on there were only a handfull of people on the server so hopefully it starts filling up.
Awesome to hear, thanks!
I'd love a LOTR game that is really about strategy, one covering the entirety of Middle Earth. You have to form Alliances which may determine if you win or lose the game, where you have to take decisions to guess where the enemiey may attack or to defeat small groups of enemies harassing villages/roads in your Kingdom. A game where you have to decide how many hundreds of soldiers you will send to a certain location yet ensure you have enough at home guarding your capitals or strategic points. Imagine playing this online as Mordor and creating a diversion in Rohan while really planning to attack Gondor.
The game should include resources, you must ensure youre Kingdom not only has Alliances but also has food, gold, metals, stone, wood etc to build and prepare for war. You may have to send resources to others who need it.
The best feeling in the game, running down archers with horsemen, the worst feeling in the game, enemy pulled out pikemen and your horsemen crashed to those pikes and die instantly
My advice - start with BFME 1. It's worth playing.
If you want something similar - try Spellforce series. Spellforce 3 is a prequel and it's great!
I'll check it out!
I still have all the games on disc and a old computer from 2009 and its still works 🙏🙏
If there is one critique I have for all three games, it's that buildings are way, WAY too easy to destroy in vanilla gameplay. Much as I love the games, that struck me as wrong since the very start.
There's something wrong, when any building besides the fortress can be destroyed by ONE unupgraded basic squad, even with two towers shooting at them.
While I am aware that this series is immensely popular and genuinely well loved, I can't stop thinking that its unlockable abilities system not only hurt its gameplay pretty badly but also led to Red Alert 3 having a similar system that had pretty much the same negative effect. I remember really liking the army versus army gameplay of the Middle Earth series but once you added heroes and the unlockable powers, it made the armies themselves much, much less useful. It didn't help that (if I am remembering properly) the abilities were not attached to any building so you couldn't really counter them or prevent their use through smart play.
This same problem carried over into Red Alert 3. The game would start with normal units clashing as intended but eventually it turns into just summoning abilities at each other over and over with the armies themselves taking a backseat.
I remember when i first played this game what a wonderful experience I had with it I'll never forget the music that still rings though my head to this day recommend playing the goblins an dwarfs really fun races have a great day.
Great memories of bailing out my mate in 2v2 online with a heroic charge of Rivendell lancers while the music reaches a crescendo...
THIS GAME WAS SO GREAT.

The fact that this game has disappeared from the official market and only survive thanks to the fans it’s like watching the Eldar slowly losing their grace and see them slowly walking to the Gray Havens to leave Middle Earth forever. It’s absolute beautiful but also depressing af
I played this game for 10-15 min before boxing it up in my closet for a few years. I was bored so i took it out and installed it on Windows 11, got it to work with an easy fix I found online and started playing. I'm heartbroken as the game is awesome. All of the game modes are fun, but knowing the servers have been down since 2010 and we'll probably never see another Lotr rts like this again just hurts.
People still play this online on gameranger
I recently returned to this game and its a blast, even better than I remembered. The game is free, I mean it's abandoware so you can't even buy it so getting it for free is not unethical in any way. People play on gameranger, but there are also other 3rd party programs that can be used so the game is fine. Problem is most people don't even know this game exist, especially young people which is kinda sad because imo it's much better than any game made today, espeically if you like RTS
Someone already said, but you should definitely review the 1st game. SOOOO much fun.
I definitely will at some point :)
This game is better now in v 1.09 and 2.02.
The only problem with BFME2 considering its from 2006 is that it dont have 1920x1080 resolution natively and it needs to be patched by fans or modded. It was a big budget title from EA in 2006 God damnit. Games from 2004 had widescreen res. Even The Hobbit (2003) which was made by a smaller studio and ported to PC from PS2 had 1920x1080 :P
