Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.
‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound.
“We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

I stopped drinking August 12 2020. I try not to be a jerk about it but I've been an alcoholic for a long time. I don't really tell alot of people. This band was my favorite new discover that year. These songs helped me work through to a better energy.

The transition at 2:58 is incredible. By far one of my favorite new bands. My life is richer with Khruangbin in it.
Someone commenter already noted, but the 2nd half of this song is devastatingly beautiful. I was next to the amp at Newport and it was an out of body experience.
Wasn't next to the amp but I was dead center at Artpark in Buffalo a week ago and this song did seem like an OBE. Such a beautiful piece of work, feel like I haven't come across many songs with the kind of weight and intention. So intensely beautiful ❤️

Musical PERFECTION starts at 2:57. These three were born to make music together. Even more impressive when you realize that Mark Speer taught Laura Lee how to play bass...in 2009! Donald Johnson's break beats are so on-point! This song takes me to Heaven...and I'm an atheist.
In Thai, the word 'เครื่อง' (khruang) means 'machine' or 'device' and the word 'บิน' (bin) means 'to fly.' Put them together and you get the Thai word for "airplane" or literally, "flying machine."
Nowhere in their description do they explain that 'khruangbin' = 'airplane.' And, the literal or "loan" translation that they have provided, in this instance, does not convey true meaning (not knocking the band). Therefore, I saw the opportunity to expand the topic even further by providing the figurative translation.
I wasn't trying to be a know-it-all. I was just really happy and surprised to discover a band that has a Thai name and I wanted to provide the figurative definition and deconstruction of the word for anyone interested in language.

This is song tells a story : the approach, the first meeting, the doubts, the first night and the love ecstasy feeling -- your heart in the clouds, that cat so soft. It has captured what love metaphysically is or what being crazy in love with somebody is. Especially the last part. It is the internal chemistry of falling in love which is embodied in this song. This is so true that you fall in love when you listen to the song -- at least with it. This is such a beautiful piece of music. I haven't heard something that deep and beautiful for ages. Now this band forces me to believe that music rises again. Anyone born on August 12 has such a beautiful birthday gift here.

Th is is how khraungbin started the Newport jazz fest 2021, tears coming down my face. Just in years of waiting to see this band when this song came out...then covid happen.. Had to wait three more years.. Seeing them open with this song was epic

I can feel there's a lot of different emotions going on in the second half of this song. For me there's some melancholy feels, followed by uplifting feels, then feels of determination/motivation. Guitar chords are a beautiful thing, man

A7, flat D with some Clapton/Hendrix influences. I sat and learned this on my strat last night. The song centers around a B mode but uses lots of pentatonic phrasing. Very nicely played by Mark Speer.
