I went to a comic design school and our inking teacher was showing us an example on a page, one of my classmates asked him "aren't you afraid to make a mistake?" And the teacher was like "if you want to do art you can't be afraid of mistakes, you'll learn to hide them. Also, if I made a mistake you guys wouldn't notice xD"

I love the contrast in all your sketches. Your light and dark tones are amazing.

Confidence is key. People are usually confused at how I can sketch with a pen but I tell them that I’ve sketched with a pen hundreds of times.

Yess! Ballpoint pen is lowkey a great way to improve your skills as a beginner. It helps get rid of the fear of mistakes!
Also really great tips and insights ❤️

It;s cool seeing someone else use the Zebra pens, underrated for sure. I only bought it for high school chemistry bc the ink doesnt bleed with most common lab chemicals (we had a choice of 3 different pens). I learned shortly after using it how well it draws with various pressures and line weight, been using it since! Love how your sketches came out with it :) makes me think how I could tackle my drawings differently

Loved seeing your process. Drawing with a ballpoint pen is so much fun. I love to use art supplies I can't erase. :)
Making mistakes is part of the process. Lately, I've been trying to improve my sketches by using clear lines.

It's wild that pen is seen as something that's difficult to work with! 😅 I guess that shows how much it really is about mindset like you said. I spent all my school years doodling in pen just because it was the only medium I had. People in class, professors if it was uni and the prof was one of those technophobic ones, random items around me, horror and gore as a child if I was in church against my will lol. It feels so much better to me now than drawing in pencil, even though I still spent a lot of time with pencil; it's like a switch flips and it all comes easier. Really interesting to see a completely different perspective from an adult artist POV!

Lovely work yet again, thank you for posting such thoughtful advice! Ballpoint sketches are so satisfying lol
As an aside, I wish the community as a whole would stop calling art/art adjacent posts "content". ;w; The modern concept of content is something produced to get eyes on it, often consumed quickly--for a few minutes, sometimes just a few seconds--and then scrolled away from; forgotten. Your work is not simply content, it is art, it is beautiful, and it deserves respect.

this is, as always, a great video! I love your chill, calm vibes, and the aesthetic you put together for the kind of artwork you're making. I got inspired with how you make your sketches that I've also started going back to traditional sketching. I might try this one out sometime, too. Seems like a good way to distress xD

Welcome back from Japan! 😊 I’m sure you’ll have a lot to share from your recent trip, especially your experience visiting the Nara Deer Park. 🦌 Would you make a Japan Haul video of the cool art supplies and souvenirs you got?

12:20 Funny! I didn't do much traditional art at all, but got into sketching with ballpoint and random paper so that I could draw between tasks at work.

Something important that I’m not sure if you covered, I’m only 2 minutes in writing this, but *pressure* is super important. So many beginning artists press on their pencil/pen super hard and it makes the mistakes more noticeable and, even if you can erase, it dents the paper. Use a light touch with simple shapes and refine it as you work into the details. To me that’s the biggest thing to keep in mind when sketching (either with a graphite pencil, colored pencil, or pen).
Edit: 10 minutes in. You make many good points and I agree more artists, not just beginner ones, need to learn to cope and problem-solve. It doesn’t come as easily for others, but it’s always possible. Once they do, they’ll see the results.

I love your spread as usual! Personally I find ballpoint pen to be a much more forgiving medium than ink not to mention more versatile and affordable.

I have to wonder (as being a beginner myself) How often do you find yourself looking at one particular thing you are working on in a sketch or overall drawing and thinkin "I don't like this" but as you go, forcing yourself to move on to the next part, you end up liking that part you didn't before or not caring about what you cared about before? I have a lot of small details in my drawings that I focus on but when the overall picture comes together I don't notice it or mind it at all. At the time though it seems like such a big deal that I feel will ruin the work.
