  • Toronto's Lower Don River runs through what today is parkland, but it's changed a lot over the years and been the site of a variety of industries. Let's take a trip along the course of the river and explore some history!

I appreciate the history lesson, I have only lived in the GTA for about 5 years, so I don't know a lot of the local history like this. 😀

Some kilns were built in the shape of beehives..that may explain the name.

Love your videos! They are lots of fun and the music is fine. ☺ Until I was seven years old, I lived on Three Valleys Drive. We were able to look across the golf course to the railroad tracks on the other side of the river. The trains were pure magic... I could hear them and see them from my bedroom window. I often wonder about those old trains and would love to know more about them and that section of track.

That was a CN line back in the day, but it's now the Richmond Hill GO line, and also carries VIA's The Canadian train coming eastbound from Vancouver (the westbound train heads out a different way). I have a few videos of trains on that line.

Not only are we exploring history, but we are also exploring our local geography! I am thoroughly enjoying your series of Toronto videos. Most Toronto videos you see are touristy, but yours takes us places that we routinely pass by without giving any thought to diverting rivers or derelict bridges cut off due to road alignment. Thanks for the tour NSS.

Great video, good to know as a former mid-town resident and now east York/Danforth. By Taylor Bros you’re probably referring to EP, a friend of my grandfather….

...I worked at the Domtar Don Valley Fine Paper Mill for a few months in '87. The building was 140 years old. The relatively tiny paper machine was 100 years old. The only thing straight and level and true in the entire place was the fourdrinier. It was like working in a museum. Legend and lore has it that you once could tell the color of the paper they were making that day by simply looking at the Don River, downstream...

smashing shot of Todmorden Mills there 🍸 openstreetmap labels the east bank railway as GO T's Don Branch, and I don't even remember its bridge to the west bank opposite the necropolis

Not surprised as this is hidden but if you go under and or search around the railway tracks (Metrolinxs Bala Subdivion 3:26) you will find a hidden and HUGE bike jump/trail area. Found it while hiking and the place is truely amazing in area and shear amount of work some group put into making it... dozens of jumps and bike trails linking the total jem hidden in the area.

You`re telling me that Metrolinx owns the half mile bridge ROW as well as the bala sub yet there not using it to run frequent double track service! GOD, number one why does CP have to be such a douche number two why is GO transit so stupidly underfunded 😒amazing videos though
