Folks-please be advised, that I rarely watch the news, and had planned on doing this ranking for over 2 weeks, so there is no 'tie in' to whatever is going on with Neil Young in the news this week. Let's keep this all about the music and the albums, and leave all the other b.s. for somewhere else...not here.

He's got an interesting discography. I know it all, but in every decade from the 60s til now he's got albums which are brilliant and albums I do not care for... I obviously love his early classics and renowned stuff like Rust never sleeps, Freedom or Ragged Glory, but I particularly love his so called "ditch trilogy", Time fades away, On the beach and Tonight's the night. Zuma is also great. So many stuff! Love this guy.

4 Live at the Fillmore East 1970 - Sparkling., come on baby let’s go downtown

Nice list, Pete. Always enjoy watching and listening to your casts! I've been a lifelong fan of Neil for many years and I'll submit my top 10 list:
    10. Silver and Gold- A cool latter day release; love the folky and sparse feel this one has.
    9. Freedom- Simply an awesome comeback from his scattered decade of the eighties. Perfect way towards reinvention!
    8. Broken Arrow- Agree with you that this was a good/solid album with the Horse. Love the opening first half of jams!
    7. On the Beach- Love the haunting, yet melodic and emotional starkness this "ditch" era album evokes. Classic Neil.
    6. Harvest- As much as I don't listen to this all that much anymore, there's no denying the classic status this possesses.
    5. Zuma- Again, with Crazy Horse and the first with Pancho on guitar, some awesome rockers and beautiful acoustic cuts.
    4. Tonight's the Night- Haunting, drunken, bleary and astonishing, this record is simply stunning. Not for the faint hearted.
    3. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere- The first with Crazy Horse and Danny Whitten. 'Nuff Said!
    2. Rust Never Sleeps- Perfect Blend of Acoustic music with a ripping electric bend. Again with the Horse, Prime Record!
    1. After the Gold Rush- This is the record that turned me on to the power and wonder of Mr. Young. All time best release!

'Trans' has a totally different meaning now, but that's easily in my top 5. They changed the mix of my favorite song Sample and Hold when it was released on CD! Also had a great version of Cinnamon Girl. Bunch of crazy vocoder voice box and programming along with some almost Hawaiian songs. Love the craziness of trying to make something different. Read the wiki page about the album. Wild stuff.

Try out Sleeps With Angels and I think you'd like Psychedelic Pill Pete ( some very long jam tunes)- right up your alley. Also a few newer releases of some 70's albums that were planned for release but held back at the time: Hitchiker, Homegrown. Freedom, Harvest Moon, Silver and Gold, On The Beach are real good too, if you haven't heard them.

Very pleased to hear your opinion of Ragged Glory. My key listened to Neil over the last decade hand down. Also one of the most appropriately named albums ever. Sleeps With Angels is another goodie. Like his folkier stuff more than you. A weak spot for Hawks and Doves - may be too short to be a top album, but love every track.

Love Neil!! Another underrated one is on the Beach. Give his box sets a chance. Especially the early years like the unreleased springfield and early daze of Crazy Horse. Cant believe he didn’t release alot of that stuff. 70’s Neil is King for me.

Quite a pleasant surprise to find a Neil Young ranking to enjoy. And foolish me…I never thought about any politics, I thought it might be related to the best of ‘’72 daily shows this month and that Harvest was released that year. My off and on fondness for Neil probably changes as often as he switches musical styles but there are certain albums cherished and enjoyed. Ten of them, with no ranking, are listed.
    Freedom
    Ragged Glory
    Harvest
    Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
    Tonight’s The Night

Neil Young has some great albums ! I agree with you Pete as I also gravitate toward the harder Rockin records with Crazy Horse. One album you didn’t mention that I love is On The Beach. It was part of his doom trilogy. But the songs have such an edge to them. And unlike Tonight’s the Night, there is some hope here.
But overall I have nearly the same listing. I rate Zuma much higher because that record helped keep me sane when I was on a ship in the US Navy back in the ‘70’s.
1 Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
    2 Zuma

    4 Tonight’s the Night

    10a American Stars and Bars
    10b Freedom
    10c Mirror Ball
    10d Broken Arrow
    10e Psychedelic Pill
