Why do UTIs Cause Confusion in the Elderly?

- Is your loved one suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's disease or another cognitive decline? If so and you notice a sudden unexplained change in their behavior such as increased confusion, agitation or withdrawal then they may be suffering from a UTI (urinary tract infection).

My elderly mom started calling me all night. She wandered down the road. Became very confused. She was diagnosed with a UTI yesterday. I’m hoping she gets back to normal. Thank you for the info
HI Darla , i worked for 13 years in a 24 hr Care unit, mum will be given AB's to clear it , once she has completed course, give her cranberry juice regularly , thats something we did in the hospital, Cranberry Juice has properties in it that helps.
My mom started the calling thing with her dad constantly until he blocked her. The only thing is my mom doesn't like to go in the hospital 😖
When will you say an elder is ready for an ER visit if the UTI doesn’t improve ? I have an elder with UTI she got 3 IM shots, taking Levoflaxin 500mg but doesn’t seem to improve …
Have you worked with an infectious disease Doctor? If not, the best thing to do would be to get a referral to an infection disease doctor and get a few different recommendations from them.
What do we do when a nursing home resident refuses a bath? My mom was confused and ornery when they tried this morning. They will check her for a UTI today.
Also, the staff will not force her to bathe :/
Hi Kevin. This is a tough one. Is there anyone at the community who has a special relationship with her? Sometimes the caregivers who might have that special friendship can get people to do things most people can’t. In rare cases, where we’ve come across similar situations we try to identify who works with them best and schedule time with them. This may not solve the problem, however it may increase the odds they are able to help her bathe.
