The way you sort out an uneven or new wick on an Aladdin is to remove the fuel, the mantle and the spreader, lift the wick up a few millimetres (or some small fractions of an inch), light it, let the wick burn dry and turn to ash, then run the wick trimmer over it and there you go, trimmed and even... :)
Thank you !! I'm just getting interested in Aladdin lamps and you answered just about everything I had a question about or wondered about. VERY informative and well put together. Thanks
Some things to note for buyers - despite some of the comments below, Aladdins are easy to use. I wouldn't recommend a model 6 (or any lamp model 1-11) simply because they are over 100 years old and yes, hard to find parts for.
Your video on these and the Rayo's is the most informative I have seen. Thank you so much for helping us other newbies that are getting started . I bought a few Rayos off the bay and am looking forward to setting them up for family and friends.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce your video. E-bay is probably the best place to find parts and wicks and mantles for the older Aladdin lamps. Recently I purchased two Model 6 wicks with wick raisers and a wick cleaner for around $30. Parts are pricey but a Model 6 Aladdin is now over 100 years old! I've read that the Model B and 12 were the best made Aladdin lamps
This summer I outfitted my two model 12 Aladdins with new Lox On mantles (part number R150) purchased from Lehman's for $15 ea. Within one hour of lighting the lamps the top of the mantle started to separate just below the suspension ring on both lamps. After sitting unused over the summer, both mantles are now completely detached from the suspension rings and will certainly crumble into worthlessness in short order. I wrote to Lehman's and explained the problem but never received a response. The new mantles are made in the Philippines and are complete junk. Aladdin had better produce a good mantle that lasts like the old ones did or the future of running Aladdins is doomed. I have three Aladdins and had considered getting a few more but without a good mantle available there is no more interest on my part in collecting or running them.
Hi you can buy a wick trimmer. to use it you remove the flame spreader it fits in the same hole has two blades on it. twist the cutter and it trims the wick perfectly every time ,hope this helps
I have a Rayo lamp, an have worked out how to make the wick holder move up and down, but I'd like to know whether there is an Aladdin or Loxon mantle that can be adapted to fit a Rayo. There would be, of course, much more light. If we have a winter as bad as the last one,, I want to be able to use the Rayo. We could use the light and the heat, as well, in the living room, and huddle in there until the lights come on again. No Interwebs, though. If someone figures out how to run THAT on kerosene, I really want to hear about it.
I am very new to these types of lamps. One day my husband brought home some lamps that I though were just Kerosene lamps till I did a little research on them. My questions at the end will pertain to parts list, where to find, how to clean/restore ect. So I have in my possession now is an Aladdin Model No. 6, an Aladdin Model C, and a Royo. I don't know what model or anything but what I can see is this. on the burner thing reads PAT D.NOV.20. MAR Royo 24.98 FEB. 28.05, than on the glass is reads (Empire) No.2 ROYO B&H Rochester. So with all those identifiers I'm just confused. I'm not seeing a specific model number or letter and don't know what to get if I need to. SO my questions are these; Where or what type of Mantle and wick do I get for the Aladdin Model 6 and model C. Also do you know anything about the Royo? I'd love to get them restored and in working condition.
Just because it will burn don't mean you should. "Additives are used to modify the properties of diesel. These include detergents, corrosion inhibitors, lubricity, cetane and cold flow improvers. Additives are blended into the diesel at virtually every stage of the distribution process, from refinery to vehicle." Can you say Cancer?

We here in the UK used what we called tillley lamps, i was always busting the mantle and my grandfather would go apeshit with me.

Great video👍
Lots of useful info, in spite of the video being hard to see at times because it was dark. IMO though the music is obnoxious... 😝
Just
You are right about the wick ..I would even leave it about 12 hrs ,if you can..
great video..

Aren’t you supposed to char the top of your wick first before you put it in the font on assembly ?

What is the name of those wide wicks you are using? How many inches wide?
Aladdin Lamp Oil:
