- The first outing with our bone stock stripper 5 Speed Jeep XJ went better than we expected, despite mysterious computer glitches, a lack of traction and zero experience working with a combination like this.
We got several runs in, and it looks like our goal of knocking out a 13 second ET using nothing but stock, year/make/model 1996 XJ specific parts is a lot more realistic than originally thought. @DrArtshotrodrehab @kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160

Tony has raced nitro-methane dragsters yet he gets excited doing this. This kind of enthusiasm should be everyone's goal.
This is a one up on Top Gear. Doubtful they have any 1/8 mile passes for this model jeep.
I'm 51 , probably like 10yrs ago Iearned about pulley swapping a riding mower.
I wish I found this out when I was a kid, because we always passed up on the riding lawn mowers, they only did 6mph.
So I built a wee beastie with a 12hp 42" cut Deutz Allis riding mower.
No problem,it did almost 30 and that's about as much as you want to push the gearbox. Anyways since I'm a speed freak I figured I would modify the engine. And then I said that's dumb just get another one.
So I swapped a 20hp v twin in place of the 12hp single.
That was fun ,then I got more of an itch and got a 30hp v twin.
Now the thing is like riding a bull, it'll wear you out.
😂
I almost want to build another 12 horsepower for the old days 🤣
Its basically like a go kart but you sit higher.
Damn things more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
This is true love for the machine we're seeing. If everyone had just 1 thing they are so passionate about with unwavering dedication we'd be in a much more peaceful world.
If everyone in a class is running a 7.20. and another class is running 14.20 .the excitement of a close race is all the same. I often question why a 30k car when I could do it with a 3.k one.
Yea there’s a point where fast becomes boring
The ECU is working as intended. No need to send it back or accept it as return. Alternator overheats the computer. Not that much of actual heat, but over voltage, and the computer's safety mode kicks in. Even though the voltage meter shows good numbers, the noise coming from the old diode bridge triggers the safety. Other thing is actual heat. The ECU has a bad ground. This creates heat and can be seen on discoloration on the board. The full cause of the issue is a combination of these. The circuit has inefficient ground, so leaky diodes create enough noise to trigger the safety mode. Can also be wrong plugs creating the noise. Or just position sensor wire going too close high voltage lead/ having insulation cracks inside the loom, where the leaky diodes feed noisy voltage.
That also explains why the original ECM was fried and required replacing.
Missing 02 also not helping
@nickmcminn2137 rear o2 is only there for cat efficiency nothing else
That explains
why he had no issues driving it when the alternator wasn't working.
And this is why 50 year old computer cars will not be nearly as much fun as 50 year old carb cars. All those "will it run and drive 1000 miles home " videos will be a thing of the past.
Getting rid of computers solves computer problems.
Yep we don't need no stinking computers.
agree
@@chumleye1112 Certainly not on cars.
all the big boys are running fuel injection and computers now.
LOL! That poor clutch.😆
No worries ,they'll make more.
I see similar issues in the Computer IT world. It ends up being a capacitor going bad on a circuit board. We usually unplug the device, we wait 15 minutes for the capacitor to discharge. Then plug it back in. Than it works for another day. and then fails again. Your 5 minute window sounds familiar
"3 or four of us have been screech banging this thing all over the place *and for some reason* it's shooting ducks outta the exhaust." 🤣
This was a lot of fun to watch! The flappy "active aero" hatch was a good laugh. And the footage of Winnie at the end was a great addition!
Install a Sure Grip, put on new rubber and remove the front sway bar for better weight transfer, and that's a sub 15-second car all day. Pretty impressive for what it is.
So much torque it rips the tailgate open every time😂😂😂😂
Thats just the active aero lol
Better than a roof scoop.
With how gear reduction works, that statement is actually true.
Even with over 50+ years as a mechanic and hot rodder, I'm not about to play Monday morning quarterback. In my estimation you guys are GOOD! Plus it's three of ya, I know, eventually, you'll get it right, and it will be something weird. I dunno shit from shinola when it comes to computers. I bailed when OBD II kicked in, anything I do know, is by osmosis, trying to fix my own hoopty. My only obsevation is y'all seriously NEED a limited slip or posi. Right now ya got peg leg Pete, obviously some fresh tires too. I only wish I was close enough to meet, and maybe hang out a bit with y'all. Always interesting, a crazy unique project in the works.
I saw a video from another mechanic that had a similar issue. He tested various circuits in the computer and noticed one of them was slowly gaining voltage and once it reached a certain threshold, it put the jeep into limp mode like youre describing. He had to resolder a capacitor or something and the problem went away.
Your rear hatch swinging open reminds me of “ Farm Truck “ but your ET’s don’t
Hahaha this comment had me dying. I thought it was hilarious when the hatch came open off the jump.
The tailgate flying open every time was just classic!!!😂😂😂
It is weight transfer for traction. LOL
I always drove around the waterbox with treaded street tires. They carry water in the treads. Had good luck with not doing a burnout also.
I had 4l that had worn thru the harness where I go's around the sharp edge at the back of the cylinder head what a nightmare to diagnose it would go crazy shooting ducks and then run fine for a while and do it again. Not saying that's your problem your video just triggered some old trama for me lol 😂😂😂
I had a 90 12 valve that would randomly blow the ignition fuse (it runs the FSS, ksb, and switched power to the regulstor)
Can't remember how I found the short, it was where the harness laid over the brake booster.
Just great seeing you guys make run after run after run, just having fun and not worrying about breaking something or having the perfect RT and all that. Perks of a beater vehicle, that's what is now lost many times, with people who think they MUST throw 10s of thousands in order to have fun.
I demand you quit this series right now Tony. Many of us are still looking for our XJ's.
😆
😂
Sold mine for a zj
@@tjshort9124 Yeah me too. I've got a 95 ZJ 4.0 with the Select-trac. But I still would like an XJ.
that thing is slow.. 10.4 seconds at 69mph lol.. my 5.9 limited ZJ gets 6s stock. at 60mph.. Hes litterally 3-4 seconds slower than me, and hee thinks hes going to get 13s 1/4 mile... hes dreaming.. ..
That's what it's all about. You guys are having a great time at the track with that thing
My buddy had the exact same jeep, only white. His did the same thing after putting a new computer in it. Both of us car guys all our lives. (He passed 3 years ago) Both boomers, and back then, didn't know squat about computers. A buddy at a jeep dealership replaced the computer. I had a friend that worked at an auto electric shop and gave him a call. He suggested disconnecting the battery and leaving the headlights on for a few minutes to drain any juice that might be in any capacitors. Sum bitch, it worked, never did it again! 😂
Boy, that's faster than All our mail trucks. 😂
Puts those 25' amazon vans with 14" wheels to shame...
I looked up 1/4 mile time of 94 Vette was 13.4 so it seems the Vette was 2.2 seconds quicker than the Jeep. It was an entertaining video . I am looking forward to seeing you get this into the 13 second
The spring turned into a pretzel. Was an excellent demonstration of what you've told us. Those 96 up sure grips are everywhere in the yards. So long as its an 8-1/4. Some of them had little Danas if I recall. A Lincoln Locker also fits your mod any stock part rule.
No that kinda locker is not stark parts bro
@@fastinradfordable He said he can modify any stock part any way he wants. A Lincoln Locker is pretty much the most basic modified stock part you can get.
@@ClaremontClassicGaragehe said in the last video that he won’t do a Lincoln locker because he wants it to still be streetable.
@@WyoCutlass71 But he also told us it doesn't need a cat because its not a street car
@@ClaremontClassicGarage haha being streetable and being a street car aren’t the same thing. I can live with a car being loud, but feeling the rear end bounce and shutter when turning isn’t something I find amusing. I don’t think he is gonna Lincoln locker this thing, but I’m not one to try and get into Tony’s head
Hey Uncle Tony...........stealing Uncle Cathy's reading glasses has given you a whole new look buddy! LOL!!! I'm just teasin' & havin' fun with ya. That Jeep XJ runs strong!
It's funny your just now discovering jeeps and 4.0 engines. Where were you 20 years ago? Makes me chuckle. They are quick. But I already knew that. Have fun
Don't roll thru water box with street tires Toney. lol and just clean them off don't get them hot, or cold. kinda screwed either way. cool to see stuff like this i love it!
Yup, water stays in treads, drips back.down while staging/ staged.
I always swing wide around water with street tires.
Second that. Front tires will drag water to the line. Air up front tires may help also.
It's funny, he has said that same exact statement several times over the years.💯
@@hellpig4309
Haha ,back in the day with my po' arse it didn't matter.
Bald street tires and I liked to put on a little show.
I had a pal with a similar car and engine setup and we usually just ran for fun at test and tunes and shows.
Being it was early 2000s ,it was kinda rare to see a VW rabbit rolling coal, just as much as my buddies rabbit pickup doing the same.
So we would always try and run each other for fun and give folks a show.
Thanks to a late model TDI engine turned back to mechanical fuel injection.
Mine was probably .4-.5 seconds quicker than his ,right around a 14 flat right at 99(I wanted the 100mph so bad) with horrible 2.6 second 60' times.
Couldn't never get that sucker out of the hole ,burnout or not I tried it all😂
Then drive home getting 51-54mpg highway not touching a thing except maybe tire pressure.
Wish I had that setup again with the money I have now.
Change 2 or 3 things on that old setup and probably knock another second off it's 1/4 time.
Tony should know better! 🤷♂️
And the burnout is completely unnecessary on street tires. He is getting his only good tire all hot and mushy.
Awesome tony! Cool to see someone having fun at the track with an XJ of all things. You picked the right setup/options for sure...2wd, 2door, ax15 trans....love the channel man
I'm glad you're giving these things attention. Got out of my TJ wrangler and found a T-boned 90 4wd 2dr in 2019. I've owned 6 other XJ'S since then. I kept and nurtured the 90 back to life. She's now at 300k miles.
Had to replace the full quarter and door and pull the B pillar back out 3-4in.
I'd love to send ya pics and my story
Get rid of carpet rear seat and sound deadening. My 4wd with 2in lift and 31's MT's sits at a porky 3100lbs unloaded. Including my Warn front bumper and tube bumper with stiffeners.
A spare tire above the rear is the right weight to plant the rear down.
With front sway removed they handle like an MR2/930 if you don't weight the rear with a spare.
If you let off in a counter steer, it'll nose dive and throw you into the trees.
Definitely get front and rear un stiffeners in.
Weld the diff 😂
Sounds like you are double clutching that thing to get it to shift. Admirable!
I was surprised how fun this was to watch, pretty good times too considering old tires and an open diff.
We’ve had 3 XJs through the years all were 4X4 automatics and I was happy with the power, especially offroad. This will be fun to see the improvements. Good luck getting the computer issue straight, lots of people already gave good things to checkout. 😊
I learned early on that heating up street tires makes them slippery. Just a short quick spin to clean is all you need. Watching you guys abuse that thing was cracking me up. I did this with a 98 Mustang V6 Auto. I took it to the track stock and took it it after each mod. First mod was a rear end out of a Turbo Coupe. 8.8 limited slip with 373's. That was the most significant mod I made. THe next was the dual exaust with H pipe, up until I started spraying it. I did a cold air intake and that helped a tiny bit. I then put in an SCT program/Chip. The a 2500 converter. That helped a little too. Then I went 50/75/100/125 then a 150 wet shot. All the shots before the 150 shot made barely noticeable increases. When I went from 125 to a 150 shot was when she came alive. I had it dyno tuned for the N20 just to be safe but the NOS jet recommendations were fine. Just pulled a little time timing on the bigger shots. I don't remember the times I was getting, it was along time ago, but she would beat tuned suberus all wheel drive turbo cars, Cobras that were stock new Z28's and vettes and I even beat a new GTO. I think it came with an 350 LS Vette motor. That car was the closest race. The others were by more than 1 to 3 car lengths.
Glad to see you guys did better than I did today at the dragstrip. 👍
Wow, Tony, that's a classic excuse. I'm spinning down the track. There's no excuses in dragging. Haha 😅 It looks like it falls on its face a lot. I can run on foot faster than that xj launching. 😅 Bless your heart, you might get 16 seconds in a quarter mile with a lot of work.
Possibly the abs/speed sensor in the rear axle . Had a car do it , it wouldn't go over 3500
His diff isn't consistent too. One pass spins 1 side, then the other
LOL 😂, bungee down that rear hatch! Your Mopar Drag Race friends from the Nothlands. Great fun!
It's a kinetic enhancer, every time it spanks itself it goes a bit faster.
You guys have a lot of fun, that’s what it’s all about!!!
Tony the exhaust sounds amazing
Check the back side of the ignition coil for a crack. If you put autolite sparkplugs in it it will overheat and crack the coil.
I love the lift gate coming open on leaving the line.
No shit no traction, one wheel spinning? You guys are having fun anyway, love it! Keep on smiling.
Had the same with my 99 Dodge Durango. It had to do with the ECU computer would get hot and shut down. Sent my unit to a place in Florida to get rebuilt and never had an issue since.
I think the track folks were enjoying the rear hatch dance as much as everyone else was.
Had some of the same issues with my 98 XJ. OBD scan tool said map sensor. Replacement it and still had issues. Then my scan tool wouldn’t connect to the ecu. Checked everything I could think of and even replaced the ecu with another one I had. Same issues. Long story short it ended up being the clock spring going bad and shorting out. Disconnected it and ran great with no issues
Awesome footage, and pretty much right where I thought it would be time wise. I know you are trying to keep it stock...but I was just looking at the ax-15 ratios and if you re-gear to say a 4.10 and a lsd and just launch from 2nd gear, the ratios would be really good for that torquey 4.0 and easily get you to the lower 14's alone. Plus, if you stick with that tire size it will still be highway driveable to the track. Really excited about this project and can't wait for 13's!
Three guys having a blast!!!
I could spent all night watch this content. Having fun at the track!
You guys are having to much fun! Miss those days! Thanks and the comments help a lot of people out there!
i gotta say that sounds fuckin good man,
them 4 liters always had a great note straight piped.
Yeah, go Winnie!!!! The true star of the show.
I cannot wait for this series
If you didnt already try,add a ground to the ecm.
Exactly, that fixed my computer problem in a similar era chrysler vehicle!
Kiwi😂, Australia Syle spinning the whole way. That's hilarious. Go Kiwi!!!
Nice 👌 the open hatch helped with weight transfer 😂
I couldn't think of anything nice to say.
It sounded great.
I'm impressed how that thing has held up to Tony's bang shifting ! Its only a matter of time till something blows
on the old computers especially the A9L Fords its usually the capacitors that take a dump...theyre cheap & relatively easy to replace...that could be the problem...others on here have mentioned capacitors...keeping stock parts...I would weld the spider gears...yank out the sway bar like you said & find some newish tires & shave off most of the tread...rear seat delete etc
Winnie is such a good girl. I love listening to her bark and walk on the lino on the Sunday evening video
Cool car . greetings from the Netherlands
Wow, I thought it was really fast until you started talking and I realized that I was still playing videos at 2x speed.
Pretty much my favorite kind of racing.
If you're going to look at better tires and want to keep a street tire, a lot of diesel performance guys swear by Nitto terra grapplers for drag racing. Just a thought
This made me smile
Weld the diff! Get some tires that don’t suck! Looks like a lot of fun!!
Damn Tony, beatin' them gears like they owe you money!
Sleping at the tree, roffl
i had an '87 s10 blazer that did the same thing that you described .... turned out to be a control module 😎✌🖖👍👌🤓
Mr. Jeep helped Popeye get his spinach.
check the capacitors in the ECM. these are from the era of the capaictor plague and kinda known for bad caps. caps are cheap and fairly easy to change - just get good ones from Mouser or Digi-Key
Just a wild thought. My mother had a jeep truck kept not starting or limp mode. Low oil 1/2 quart to quart stranded. Maybe hard and fast take offs making it seem low on oil computer putting in lower rpm to save motor? Just a thought.
Early Nissan Exa turbos had similar issues, but you had to unplug ECU to reset. My friend ended up putting momentary switch in his to reset on the fly.
Old School Tech at its Finest!
How do you fix weird computer issues when all else fails? Turn it off and turn it back on!
I totally dig it! Great stuff guys!
No that’s how you miss clear warning signs and turn a flaky computer- and then the entire car and computer into a doorstop
Still the go to move for modern I T techs
I hope he tried hitting it first.
Ugh, that inline sounds SOOOO good
There is a shitty transistor in the ecm the bad part functions until it is under high load it heats up and doesn't work right just saw something about this on a different vehicle the mechanic had to drive 30 miles to produce a fault then had 10 minutes to diag before it reset
my guess would be the heater element for the o2 sensor, i bought a 1995 dodge that had a toggle switch for a battery cutoff because the guy took it to several shops that couldnt figure it out, it doesnt throw a code and the toggle switch made it run okay for some reason
I'm laughing every time you guys are saying "Switch off" or "Switch on". Sounds like you're starting a WWI fighter.
Can't believe how light that thing is! My 97 Explorer with a 302 is just over 4500! Back in high school a buddy had a Jeep Comanche with a 4.0 and auto. We beat so many 350 Silverados with that thing street racing, it was hilarious!!!
A powertrax ratchet locker would be great in that. They install in an hour, require no set up, and aren't very expensive.
They allow the outside wheel to free spin when making tight turns.
I really like mine. They are a lot cheaper, and easier, than a posi or standard locker.
Just an idea.
Right whell spun one run
Left wheel spun next
Third run right wheel spun
It's got an alternator in there instead of a detroit, he was wearing Kathy's glasses when he put it in! 😂
The COLD one spun.
I don't doubt the 15.60's...
My buddies 68 Newport 383 2 barrel and 3.23 gear ran 14.90 to 15 flat all the time in the 1/4 mile...Yes a 290 hp 383 2 barrel..120,000 original mile car never touched 15 flat were half to 3/4 tank of fuel and 100 lbs of tools in the trunk and spare tire/small floor jack(bumper jacks are deadly) floor jack added to the weight of his basic tools he had in the trunk. He even had a spare magnum 500 wheel in the trunk as that's what his car had(hubcaps were missing 2/4 were gone ..
Weight was just over 3900 lbs weight he took it to the scale with 1/8 thank of gas and it was just under 4000 lbs.He was around 160 lbs and even with his gas and tools he still ran those times. Some tuning and easy weight loss would have shaved a few more tenths off, dont know how much duel exhaust would add or a open element breather?
I also had a 383 2 barrel 68 and ran side by side with him on the street..His was a 4 door sedan, mine a 2 door hardtop..Both only options were power steering and power brakes, radio, bench seat..Both had 3.23 gears. He kept his well over 200,000 miles and it always performed the same, until shortly after he started smoking and lost power, but it still moved decent. He did rebuilt the 383 and kept chugging along!
Jeepish shenanigans , what a hoot 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
You'all did not put new caps in the 'Puter. They've aged out. They are leaking voltage.
Ha, that is something to actually seriously consider. Although I have never thought of it when it comes to cars. I rebuild old amps ( guitar) from 60s and 70s so, I'm very aware of old capacitors leaking. It's just something if not thought of in the car world.
Caps and upgrading the ground side with new crimped and soldered ground cables going to chassis, cabin steel, the alternator mount, and especially the ECU mount/enclosure really helps. Absolute ground all tied together so they see same reference voltage is #1 before anyone starts "tuning" an ECU 🙃
This looks like so much fun! I wish there was a track anywhere where near where I live, unfortunately drag racing isn’t really a thing on Vancouver Island Canada.
I've never really liked SUVs. But a 2 door, 2WD, manual jeep like this is definitely something for me. I would have to lower it and do a few other things. But the platform is good. Especially with the inline 6
Love the show, keep it up
The swinging tailgate also moves the centre of gravity back for more traction.
Wire both constant and key on power at ECU to key on only supply
This Had to be SO Much Fun!!
Awesome!👍
I put my headphones on, I love the sound of an inline 6 a full rip.
This is great !!! It looks like alot of fun . That thing is quick for what it is. To bad you cant lose the computer and ut a carb on it
Congrats on breaking into the 15’s!
Add spray please.
looks iike its got a factory trac-lok, its just worn out, the other tire tries to spin. maybe you can rebuild it? if not a lunchbox locker is cheap, but if you have a factory Trac-Loc youll need a different carrier to run a lunchbox locker, youll need a carrier from a open diff 27spline most likley
Yeah my '96 had a plumb-wore-out Trac-Loc in it. Had two tweakers not stolen it and trashed it, I probably would've rebuilt the rear end.
I love LAMP, and JEEP. ;-) Strength! GODspeed!
19:34 me and my Vega in the background, y’all should have come said Hi
Next time sir
We had this issue . Now hear me out . We got this jeep turn over no start . After TPS, and IAC . We got it running , but it ran like crap and wouldn’t go over like 3000 rpm . I pulled the distributor and retimed it and it runs perfect now . There is several different ways and variations of timing for these 4.0 liter sixes , this one had a distributor cap designating the number one spot , and it was wrong for the year model . 93 grand Cherokee with the 4.0 . 800 bucks . lol .
Waiting for the hei, carb swap
Points and carb lol
A points 232/258 distributor will bolt right in
Great dragstrip intro Tony.SUCCESS!
Don't blame the confuser, put a scope on power and ground. I'd say the smart money is on the alternator causing over voltage, trips ecu into limp mode. You all drove it before the alternator was replaced. Easy enough to test, just unhook the alternator and go for a drive.
Plus driving thru the water the rear tires going thru the water from the fronts
