Some parents complained that he looked stoned all the time--perhaps they thought it was encouraging drug use. Other people had to point out that that's exactly how sloths behave.

Back when saber-toothed tiger were around, the modern sloth hadn't evolved yet so instead there was the Megatherium, who were elephant-sized sloth. Now look at this cute sloth gigantic claws and scale them to Megatherium size...
Animals used to be more badass is where I'm going with this.
They have probably just kept a really low profile and kept reproducing. It didn't help that humans helped smilodon, the wooly mammoth, and the dire wolf go extinct. Probably not as much demand for sloth meat, although, since they don't get much exercise, I imagine it would be tender, like naturally occurring veal.
