@@L.Spencer it's really about nutrient density of the food. A species can grow larger and consume more total nutrients, become less metabolically active and require less nutrients or change nutrient source to something more energy dense.
Sloths being adapted for life in the trees weren't really able to grow any larger or heavier, and for whatever reason couldn't or didnt want to change their diet so they had to slow down all the metabolic activity in their body to compensate.
There are usually multiple branches that evolution developed down with different solutions to common problems.

he's done that for almost a century, he made documentaries while on his trips in the wild like 50 years ago. he has a really cool life

Sloths have such an incredibly slow metabolism that if it overeats it will die from exhaustion because it takes so much energy to break down an extra large meal that it will perish before all the nutrients can be broken down and absorbed.
