The original version illustrates the disgust and horror of war/terrorism as this version gives power to the pain and sorrow it causes. Both versions are beautiful in their own way. Never thought I would see the day someone could cover this song so amazingly. Ms. Sykes is ludicrously talented!

@@HitManRickyTan Finally listened to the bad wolves cover. I didn't enjoy it, it just felt boring, no soul. I also didnt like that they changed the line to say "drones" instead of "guns," which was an obvious jab at America, and considering the original song was written about the IRA in Ireland, terrorists mind you, I cant help but think the band was trying to imply America as being terrorists... perhaps im over analyzing.

Noob Sandwich, I don't think the band implies that, but now that you mentioned: USA made up lies to invade and start wars in several countries (see Irak and the Bush administration), they murdered many innocent people in other countries. They even murdered their own people systematically by the police (many things just come out because there are cameras now). The only difference between terrorists is that USA is a big country and has more power and can cover these things up easily.

I really love how this one has more lament than the original. As others said, the original was outrage at the conflict, but this is the mourning that follows it. I didn't even make it to the first chorus before I started to tear up. This will always be one of the most important songs in my life, it made me want to write music, and this is hands down my favorite take on it.

Consider the struggle from which Soul music sprang. From my understanding as an outsider, looking in from a position of deep appreciation and respect for the art form, there are deep parallels between the African American experience and the Troubles of Ireland.
If there were any style that could truly express the pain and fury this song is made of, it would be Soul.

I think they're the same, really. Any mother would feel outrage, and sorrow. Culturally, the sorrow comes across strngly in African American soul music, and harshness is translated well in Irish songs of anguish and lament. It's partly their language and accent.

It sounds like a mother who watches her son return from war for him to only be a PTSD riddled shell of his old self, and she doesn't know how else to describe it, but she knows her son is so much more than a walking corpse. The performance of this is beautiful and hits right to the heart. Anyone who reads this? Please understand that this song is specifically about an IRA bombing that killed two boys, ages 3 and 12, the latter had to be taken off life support by his family 5 days after the attack because he never had any real brain function from head trauma.
At least one of them had been out shopping for a mother's day card, possible both depending on where you read.
As much as the original version flat out screams anger and pain? This version, if you know the story behind the song, is just disgusted sadness like those children's families must still feel.
EDIT 4/16/2021: Thank you everyone for all the "👍" and contributions in the comments. I appreciate you all taking the time to read my somewhat long-winded explanation of the truth behind the song. Its important we know our real history, and never forget it.

It is like the cornucopia of musical grace, sound and vibration come alive here in all of these arrangements. i can't stop listening to the entire mix, I am glued to my Laptop, waiting to see what next angelic song will come next. The voices of these ladies are incredible, without peers. How it all comes together is enlightening. Thank you for sharing this. I've come to the PMJ party late, as I'm not a huge fan of cover/tribute bands, but as I work my way through the PMJ catalogue, this has to be one of the most powerful performances PMJ has put together. Well done, Ms Sykes. Dolores would've been chuff to bits by this, I'm sure.

I cannot put into words how deeply moved I am by this performance. In the climate of conflict this year in the US, where young people are gunned down and churches attacked, I hear the words with renewed meaning. I think of today's mother losing a child to racist violence. I think of people who live by the gun and I wonder what-the-hell is in their head! It is the same old thing since nineteen sixteen, or is it now Juneteenth. Thank you, Russel B, for the original intent and motivation for the song. The song and this performance are a great work of art, and a declaration against war, violence, and gun addiction. Thank you. gratefully.

    Another head hangs lowly
    Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
    Who are we mistaken?
But you see, it's not me
    It's not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying
In your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie-ie, oh
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
Another mother's breaking heart is taking over
    When the violence causes silence
    We must be mistaken
    It's the same old theme
    Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they're still fighting
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dying
In your head, in your head

I don't comment often but today I feel like I have to...
Besides the fact that Lady Maiya Sykes changed the word "breaking" to "broken" in the second verse, giving the song a strong mourning/grief feel that her absolutely amazing voice renders perfectly (no, no, I'm not crying, my eyes are just sweaty...) and that she is stunningly georgous in this dress, can we just take a moment to praise her for the fantastic job she did in arranging this already masterpiece of Music (yes, with a capital M) and make it her own?
Miss Sykes, you are a true gem!!! Your voice, your talent, the emotions you pass onto your singing, your beauty... The whole YOU is the most perfect treasure there is!!!
