Kim’s whole backstory about her up and down relationship with her older brother is an interesting take that made for some of her BEST songs. But it’s also interesting how for ME atleast, coming into adolescence and totally devouring everything Sonic Youth I could from age 14- I always thought of Kim as a cool older sister. The older sister I never had. Sounds hella dramatic, lol- but her songs always hit home for me in a way that the Thurston and Lee’s didn’t and she was my total idol & I looked up to her in a big way. As a 14 year old gay kid, KIM was my Madonna or Cher or Lady Gaga. Every Dave Markey music vid and short he’s done is awesome as hell, but I love this one especially because of how Kim is front and focused and plays big sister. The coolest damn big sister you could ever hope for!
everytime me too. probably because they didn't make the big time until they were all 30 and all the 20 year old bands who were influenced by them were hitting the mainstream.
for those who didn't know, that cop was Bill Bartell, aka Pat Fear of White Flag, we lost him today, the punk scene of LA will not be the same with out him
This was the song that made me a fan. I was vaguely aware of them and my young ears hadn't been able to get past the fact that they were so abrasive and noisy, nor could any of them sing particularly well in a conventional sense (Lee came closest). But this song, perhaps better than any other, marries that abrasiveness with surprisingly moving arrangements. And it is IMO the best Kim song. Her voice fits in that maelstrom of stabbing, swirling guitars perfectly. I really loved that Sister/Daydream/Goo period. They're still a little raw and edgy, but they were growing in leaps and bounds in terms of composition and musicianship. I appreciate their later output too, but they started evolving into a different band at this point.

I remember when this song came out and suddenly every one wanted to be punkers because it was the cool thing now. Only few really got this music because like some things in life it was before it's time. Cool to see it grabbing attention all over again. Maybe more people will finally understand it.
I'm so proud I saw sonic Youth live at Reading 96 they were amazing they completely blew the stone roses off stage just before them as for the roses some one should have pulled the plug on them before they came on. The Sonics really headlined that night.
Okay to clear up all this signing to Geffen misinformation, Sonic Youth signed to DGC in 1990, which is DAVID GEFFEN COMPANY, a subsidiary of GEFFEN records. The label's goal was focusing on more experimental and progressive material. THEY SIGNED TO DGC IN 1990 THAN RELEASED GOO. DGC would later wind down in the late 90s leaving only Beck and Sonic Youth in their stable until 2003.

Bought the CD when new. One of their best albums. Too bad they broke up, and not in a nice way. I have the 1990-2002 DVD with most of their vids; time to give it a spin! Kim looks spun-out too, at the end. ;-)
As someone wuth sibilings I do relate to this song a lot, though, thank God, none of us was drug addict and hopefully no one will. Due to that reason, I find this song to be more sad than angry as it seems at first, after anger is a lot of time cover up tp feeling sad.
Holy shit, their music has stood the test of time like a fuckin rock.
To be fair, it's kind of easy when everything these days is someone dancing behind a laptop hitting a button waiting for some 'drop' to happen

Sonic Youth is one of those bands that the more I listen to their body of work, the more I understand... It's very abstract...
