thanks to love & pies for sponsoring!!
these are the worst books that i read this year. my least favorites. i take my duty very seriously when it comes to reading popular things and reporting back to all of you and you should not be surprised that the majority of this list is a result of that project. if i respected myself more i would finish these books less.
disclaimer disclaimer if you take my opinion seriously that is on you - these did not work FOR ME, a 23 year old girl with 0 qualifications other than having fantastic style and great hair. you can read whatever you want.

“The inside of her head doesn’t pass the Bechdel test” is the best sentence ever 😂
was about to comment that 😂
Literally the best 😂
What does it mean??
@@imboringidkwhyimalive Alison Bechdel created a set of rules or criteria to check if a work of fiction (usually a movie) had written female characters stereotypically or as sexist caricatures of women.
Here is a definition I found: “a way of evaluating whether or not a film or other work of fiction portrays women in a way that is sexist or characterized by gender stereotyping. To pass the Bechdel test a work must feature at least two women, these women must talk to each other, and their conversation must concern something other than a man.”
@@imboringidkwhyimalive if a female chara only thinks about boys and make up you dont pass. If your female chara has other likings, you pass.
Its a only test aboit woman
"i'm just a 23 year old teenage girl" I felt that one in my soul lol.
I’m a 27 year old teenage girl so it checks out
same but im 25 and a guy
Its a great tiktok refrence every time i hear it
@@PrettierInPurplegrow up girl you’re basically 30 lmao
@@minpiieit’s a joke, live a little
“Long thick weapon of mass destruction” tells me all I need to know about Things We Never Got Over
truly i wish i could unread the smut in that book
She also constantly refers to him as looking like a viking
They lost me in the very first scene “well then you better hold tf on” horrible
I've tried and failed to get through that book 3 times. It's just... Not great
That is hilarious
every single day i’m baffled that icebreaker can be labelled as a sports romance, when it’s written like the author has yet to find out what figure skating is
The main character, a FEMALE COLLEGIATE PAIRS skater, jumps a quad Lutz 😂
I read the book on a camping trip and was complaining to my roommate the whole time about how ridiculous the sports stuff is lol.
I want to make it clear: I know so little about sports that I shouldn't have been able to tell the sports weren't sporting
The Arab representation made me cry
i saw it online as a hockey player, and i was like oh cute a hockey romance! and then i opened the first 3 pages and nearly put my head through a wall from the writing, i could get better writing on ao3 :(
Literally. The author is just throwing around skating terms and seems to have never watched pair skating at all. When I read “quad lutz” on like page four I almost put the book down and gave up. So ridiculous.
"Central america, country unkown" is one of my favorite running jokes/scathing commentaries ever. I approve
She says it with such authority that I was starting to wonder if that's what the book actually said, hahaha
Can u pls explain? 😅😅
@evsaintuya The book doesn't bother to tell us where in South America he goes (lazy writing), so Lexi draws attention to this by saying "country unknown". Is that what you were asking?
@@TheSoftestGirlYouKnow ohh yes thank u!!
“The inside of her head doesn’t even pass the Bechdel Test” is one of the best insults I’ve ever heard. There is no greater grievance a book character can commit then being annoying
Honestly I liked Icebreaker for the first 5 chapters where Stassie hated him. It’s pretty common for figure skaters and hockey players to have a nasty rivalry - hockey players can be really misogynistic. I think she was valid to hate Nate for what she viewed as him not being responsible for his teammates as captain. Hockey players practice a lot, especially if they’re a good team, as do figure skaters, so considering there’s only so much time between classes for both groups to practice it seems okay (not that they ever go to class). Maybe it’s because I’m canadian but every uni has at least two rinks in their complex, so that’s not a cracked up rich person thing. The problem was that there was no plot, every character was shallow, they suddenly went from disliking each other to fucking like rabbits, and the author had a fundamental misunderstanding of both sports she was trying to represent. I hated icebreaker with a passion.
yes! i was really excited for all the abusive-skater-partner plot, but it never really came. it was never resolved, the author just got lost with a lot of pwp (porn withouth plot) and killed the potencial of the book😊
i liked icebreaker. But something i would NEVER tell somebody would be that this was enemies to lovers bc nate was into her off the bat tbh, it was sorta one sided (and the trope was what i was interested in)
Lexi, I love the way you express yourself. I could truly listen to you talking about HORRENDOUS books for hours on end
🫶🫶🫶 thank you bestie
Truly, she’s cracked it
I love the way she talks, she enunciates every word I'm obsessed
real and true
she would be such a good podcaster
tiernan not only didn't beat her trauma, she got basically groomed by her uncle and almost assaulted by her stepbrother. please save our girl from the clutches of borderline creepy and insane stepfamily. also justice for her dead mom's secretary or whatever she was for being the only normal person in that book.
if it were written as a drama or borderline horror, it would do a very good job
Not almost assaulted. She was. If Noah, or whatever was the name of the other brother, hadn’t stopped him, he would have most definitely let things go much further. As if what he’s done hasn’t been enough
the fact my irl name is ‘kiernan’ scares me
It is absolutely killing me that you still have Uncle Jake Reagan on the wall
This
i can’t stop laughing at him just lurking at the corner of the video the entire time
The rest of the wall and room look so pinterest and #aesthetic and then there's just.... him.
I’m a whore for trashy romance but hearing someone talk about how how insane these books are brings me an equal amount of joy
"a Hallmark movie playing at 50% speed" 😂💀 as always, thank you for going to the front lines for us Lexi
Hearing a Murakami book be called “feminist” in any context is absolutely hilarious
this is a different murakami!! but still not feminist LMAO
Trust me, Japan is so sexist, that even THAT Murakami (Haruki) is somewhat feminist, at least for a Japanese man his age. Bleak, I know. He does recommend Mieko Kawakami to everyone though, so maybe he's not hopeless.
@@elizabeth.601what is this take
ryu murakami, not haruki lol
when you said that the ending of icebreaker gives the main woman a housewife pregnancy epilogue I wanted to scream. I've never hated a book I've never read more in my life
Ikrrrr sameeee 😭😭
I was so gagged when you said the credence debrief was two hours long because I’ve watched it twice and never did I realise it was that long! Your ability to keep your audience actively engaged and wanting more even after two hours is insane 😭❤️
SAME
I’m still so obsessed with “Central America, country unknown” it’s so funny to me. also I love hearing your thoughts about books!! as someone whose not a big romance reader, I love hearing about these unhinged books (and the good ones too)
edit: if you want a hockey player/figure skater romance (that’s also gay) just read check, please! it’s pretty great imo
I picked up Icebreaker thinking it was a cute, fluffy romance. I it made until the Uber scene and threw it out as soon as possible 😂
Honestly, same. 😭
Completely agree with you about Ice Breaker.
I literally just read it, and i almost threw the book when she called him “bub” 😂
GOD i cannot believe i didn't mention this. that is also insane.
she's just casually wolverine
it is the most out of character nickname coming from anastasia. never in my life would i believe she would call anyone "bub". the first time i thought she was saying it ironically
This whole video sums up the #1 reason why I'll never read any books from the "tiktok made me buy it" table at a bookshop
I thought, "It can't be that bad." Then I started ACTIVELY SHOUTING AND CRYING "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" WITH AT LEAST HALF OF THESE BOOKS
If Ice Breakers has no haters, i'm dead. I actively hiss at it when I see it at bookstores.
oh my gosh I am halfway through it... I decided to watch review just to confirm that it is indeed shit . I cant believe people are recommanding it.

ao3 comparison truly too good when they have too little hits or kudos its either the best fic ever or spells clothes like cloths with no formatting
that comment about sifting through the dredges of ao3 was too real queen
“Momtoria v Newtoria” was hilarious. Thank you for acknowledging that you can read a terrible book and still be entertaining, and someone else might like it. But these were hilarious takes and you saved me a lot of time. Cheers xx
Of all of these types of videos detailing a booktuber’s least favorites, I was the most excited for yours because nobody else goes into the trenches quite like you do 😭🙏🙏 god bless honestly
Icebreaker is just “modern day” smutty “cutting edge” fanfic and no one can change my mind
God and I’m sure I’ve read hundreds of fanfic far better than it, considering what I’ve heard about it
@@nono-br5wkreal
" Long thick weapon of mass destruction" I see that in a book and I put it down and cry like that tells me everything I need to know about Things We Never Got Over.
Truly thank you for saving us all from Credence. Woman of the people doing the most for the team.
If you’re looking for something popular to hate read, Mile High by Liz Tomforde gave me jaw pain for 3 days from grinding my teeth at everything the male main character said.
📝📝📝
zander truly is a different level, but i have a lot of love for stevie and honestly it was just a good trashy time reading that (and i also like mile high way better than the right move but i seem to be alone with that lmao)
"I do, in fact, touch grass sometimes" is my entire personality
I made the mistake of reading American Psycho and finished it after, not one, but TWO mental health breaks. It traumatized and desensitized me and it is somehow the worst best book I will ever read 😂
THANK YOU for validating my hatred for Icebreaker!!! I thought my brain was broken- everyone was recommending it while I felt negative amounts of joy from that disaster.
I’ve only watched this video and your video on Creedence but I think you’re my new favorite book review channel.
I just found your channel and im absolutely in love with your stile of reviewing books. Also as a neurodivergent person myself, its deeply relatable to see your content and how you present yourself. Now im even thinking about making my own channel! Thank you
🫶🫶🫶 thank you for being here :')
i have heard you talk about credence so many times now and i will continue listening to it over and over because it baffles me how insane this book is and i just love the way you speak it about it lol.
every time i watch your videos it really feels like what i imagine having an older sister would be like. thank you for always keeping it real with your critiques but also having the same sense of humor as me, it makes these videos so fun! and thank you for speaking at the perfect speed, really scratches the brain
🫶🫶🫶 you are so welcome bestie thank you for coming along~
As a ND person whose special interest is books and listening to people on Booktube talk about books, you're one of my recent faves, all your jokes I swear we have the same gray matter
16:25 the dead pan ”Central America, country unknown” has to be my favorite ongoing joke in your videos lmao
"mom"toria and "new"toria absolutely SENT me 😆
Jump scare uncle Jake on your wall 😭😭
As someone who would never read these books but am deeply curious about them, I’m loving this video. Thank you for going through the trenches for us😂
Genuinely shook to see Audition on here but I respect the difference in opinion
i am glad it worked for you ✌️ i wish i'd liked it more than i did
I was wondering if Central America: Country Unknown was going to make an appearance. I´m overjoyed that it did.
Ice breaker was the absolute worst book I ever read. I’m Arab, and I felt they the way the Arab character was written is how 12 year old me would have represented myself in a fanfic.
I completely agree with your take on the Fine Print! And even thought the premise sounds crazy when you put it like that (😭), Terms and Conditions aka the 2nd book in the Walt Disney fanfic series is pretty good and the best of the 3 by far imo. You should give it a try
i am considering it for this year for sure, i have heard that the other two were better than the fine print
I'm so glad I didn't try to read the Knockemout series now, just hearing you talk about it makes me want to claw my ears out 😂
the way i can still see the uncle stock photo from your Credence video is making me giggle XD
I would listen to you rip books apart (and anything else you put out) for hours on end, you are truly a breath of fresh air and I love your style 🥹😭
I’ve yet to see anyone comment on this, but I hated icebreaker’s main characters with a passion. Stassie begins the book by stating that her planner is her lifeline and she’s hopeless without it, but after a few chapters the planners never mentioned again. Then you have Nate who, when taking a shower with Stassie, has to ask what conditioner is and have the concept of it explained to him. It’s the worst written book I’ve read in such a long time.
I am sooooo thankful I just finished icebreaker and I hated it sooo much so I’m so glad you feel the same way…. This was such a good experience for me run.
Yes! TikTok tried to gaslight us into thinking this was a good book when it is actually the worst book ever written
Every single time I talk about twisted games and how boring it was everyone looks to me like I’m a psychopath so I’m glad I’ve found my people
Sameeeee 😭😭😭 Twisted games is in my DNF list cuz u hated how boring it was 💀
I beg you, BEG you, to read ‘Hooked’ by Emily Mcintire. It’s meant to be a romance, but my god, it is the most horrific thing I have ever laid my eyes on. The mental disconnect that the author had to push the idea the two main characters were in love was so insane, I had to put the book down twice. Honestly, I think it might be up there with credence.
“This is a book for your brainstem and your brainstem alone” is a sentence I will carry with me for the rest of my life
I can’t explain it, but your voice, tone, cadence, wit, and sense of humor just perfectly scratch a very specific part of my brain that I did not know existed. So that’s neat lol. I could listen to your takes on my tiny town’s local newspaper and remain wildly entertained lol.
Keep on keeping on, you’re great!
lmao the way you explained the plot and characters of without merit actually makes me want to read it just for the lols 😭 momtoria and newtoria lore goes crazy
obsessed. also had many of these on my worst books. not from this year but probably one of my most hated books is a million kisses in your lifetime by monica murphy. so many questionable things i can't fathom how it's some people's favorite book.
i was sent a copy of this unsolicited actually it has been on my radar for a little while
lexi i could listen to you talk for hours i adore your voice and the way you talk like i’m obsessed
Yessss! You're the only BookTuber who has similar taste as me! Let's clear my tbr!!! 🥰
Edit: Okay, never mind. None of these were on my list 😂
You’re my new favorite channel, I love hearing you talk about books. You’re hilarious and so well-spoken
the days when you upload are the best days of my life, thank you so much!!!
I have rewatched this video so many times. The way you present everything, rehash what happened, quip about the absurdity of these books - it is just so comforting. I can’t even quite describe it, I just appreciate you for this!
I love the way you just explain ridiculous books seamlessly and as someone who read the "Twisted series", the first two books were kinda plain, like the last two books were at least enjoyable and good. Your thoughts on "Things we never got over" were very similar to mine. Also if you want a book that would make you hate its existence please read "november nine" or "the summer I turned pretty"
someone once said Zahra is essentially a Disney adult... and i couldnt agree more XD
Banger video.
I don't really watch book reviews but you managed to make it interesting and funny for me despite having not red any of the books.
I listened to this as background noise while doing work. I didn't quite hear you say "Audition", so as you were summarizing it I realized that it sounded like a j-horror film I watched when I was in high school (2009). Turned around to see the title, and it was like being hit with a flashbang.
Need to watch asap when you upload vids. Thank you for your service! 🙌
my most anticapted video of the year
A GRU SMUT SCENE?! omg, I never had the urge to read that story but that made me literally laugh out loud.
The book "Without Merit" was named appropriately!
This was 1. Hilarious and 2. Very refreshing to feel so seen 😂 you are probably one of my only fave booktubers that shares my sentiments on these books.
Also, I would very much be interested in a video on your top romance books
this is the first video i’ve watched of yours and i immediately subscribed, watched from first minute to last and laughed out loud at least 100 times.. genuinely best book channel i’ve come across
I feel like a lot of booktubers are overly kind about books and not super picky, which I can tend to be at times, so I LOVE and appreciate your brutal honesty sm. I watched your Credence video because multiple people in my life were considering reading despite some of the themes I heard of and shared with them (the same reasons I choose not to consume such.. debauchery.. and don’t get me wrong I also grew up on Wattpad I can get with some wild shit but just no) so I truly appreciated your break down and willingness to take one for the team 😂❤
i love your bad book reviews so much, they're so funny and i love listening to them in the background :D i hope you do more this year!! i hope you don't suffer too much in the process tho 😭
Favourite booktuber. The way you describe books is hilarious and you're the only person I don't have to watch on 1.5x speed
I love listening to you talk about awful books, I've been obsessed with your video on Credence lately and I'm happy (?) to see it make #1 of this list, lmao
I don't read a lot of books, but one of my least favorite books of all time was one I read a few years ago, 11/22/63 by Stephen King, and at the time I was the only one in my book club who didn't absolutely love it. I would love to see you talk about it, see if maybe I just have bad taste or it really is as bad as I remember
your book reviews have become a thing I start to watch when I'm having a really tough time self-regulating or shame spiralling and I'm so grateful to you for always bringing me a smile and also. jaw dropping revelations about the books you read. you're a massive comfort creator (love your style by the way!) and i've been picking up a lot of your recommended books recently!
🫶🫶🫶 honored to be here for you
Thank you for having the book in the corner when you talk about it!!! I hate having to go back when I missed the book!!
omg i just discovered your channel and watched your top favorites, rating your 5 star books, and this and i just LOVE all of your thoughts and reviews! you should start a podcast because i will just listen to you on all of my commutes
I would love to see a ranking video of all the worst smut that show up in these awful TikTok romances lol. Seems ripe for the picking
Found your channel recently and love every second that I get to watch you rant about garbage books thanks for doing what you do.
Just wanted to say that each time I see one of your videos it brightens my day! It's a lot of fun to see your mind at work dismantling - or enjoying - a book, and you manage an incredible wit with each of your reviews. And in this case suffering through things to entertain us is another plus!
I was surprised when you said Things We Never Got Over was an adult romance because the cover made me think it was a YA romance. It reminds me of the Meg Cabot and Sarah Dessen books I used to read as a tween.
ETA: I need you to do a review of Without Merit. I just know you'd tear it apart in the best way.
i love the intro "hi hello i hope you're taking care of yourself" it just. every time i hear it my heart swells a little
I love your video description! Thank you for including such great timestamps. I don't usually comment on someone's looks, but since you mentioned that your "fantastic style and great hair" are your qualifications for reviewing and rating these books, I've gotta tell you that I love your outfits and your hair! Your taste in sweaters is impeccable.
personally i love icebreaker because it is so incredibly mind numbing. i’m one to read like psychological horrors or just darker books, so hannah grace books are the perfect turn off my brain read. BUT OH MY GOD THAT EPILOGUE WAS SO BAD, I JUST WANT A CHILDLESS QUEEN. WHY IS IT LIKE NO STRAIGHT ROMANCES CANT END WITHOUT PREGNANCY????
I could listen to you talk about books for hours 😭
I was so excited to see a new video of yours pop up, and ESPECIALLY so when it's something you hated. I don't know exactly what it is, and I wish it weren't so (for your own sanity) but the way you describe things you've hated is SO entertaining. Thank you for exposing these books so I never have to hate read them. ❤
Okay you are so spot on about Audition. I *love* horror and am deeply obsessed with the genre but Audition was truly boring and baffling to me for all the reasons you listed. I also felt similarly about Twisted Love. The hype did not live up and it was also kind of boring and my disbelief (which is usually easily suspended) was not suspended in any way.
I love when you post I even was waiting 😭
I recently got back into reading again and every time I feel bad about only reading 2-4 books a month while other people are out here reading 12, I remember you telling me that it’s okay, and even healthy, for reading to not be your whole life. Thank you for your content, and I don’t mind if you don’t have the spoons to respond to this ❤️
This is such an iconic video, thank you for being so honest!❤
The algorithm gods gifted me your Credence video yesterday and I've been down the rabbit hole ever since. These book reviews are giving my soul everything I need 💜💜💜
Also so happy to hear another perosn didnt like The Fine Print. Honestly the best thing about it now is that the cover of the book looks cool
see, you got the vibes. and the vibes are correct every time ❤️
So excited for a new year full of (hopefully not so traumatic - cough cough Credence) content!! Thank you Lexi :)
I love the way you talk about books... Logically I know the twisted books aren't great, but they were so entertaining tho haha
i love this video because i know i will never read a single one of these books and now i don’t have to in order to know how nonsensical they are
your videos are the highlight of my day🥰🥰
tbh sometimes I love it when nothing happens in romance books
i respect this
I feel you so much on the curiousity leading you to the worst books. I'm always like, "It can't possibly be that bad of a train wreck," and then it always is.
