Honestly king behavior because the second that scene came up I was like “ugh more easily avoidable melodrama” and then he just immediately spills and it was like a weight instantly lifted off my chest. I would kill for the characters to be that rational all the time.

I'm so glad you acknowledged how fucking weird the Charmings are to Emma this season. They keep trying to parent her, but any time they have an opportunity to like replace her with another baby or abandon her to go live in Neverland forever, they will take it. Also it's just assumed that David is the person Snow loves most. Emma's name isn't even brought up. I'm just saying, Emma's abandonment issues aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

OUAT being so soap opera, you could even understand a ship taking precedence had the writers not spent LITERAL SEASONS establishing that kissing one’s child constitutes true love and that both Emma and Regina’s biggest love is Henry.

For me, I was devastated by the loss of Hook and Neal's relationship. They had that really heartfelt moment and hug in the hospital, showing how much we didn't need 'all the nonsense over a girl.' He had started to become family to Killian, but Hook didn't know, or let I suppose, himself be better yet and messed it up in the past. It made me really emotional! And that was just a SMALL portion of the potential Neal had

Totally totally totally agree with you on Neil -- completely wasted potential for the character relationship shenanigans. It would give Emma the opportunity to have AN ACTUAL FRIEND BESIDES HER WEIRD MOM. And Henry can have an adult he actually trusts. And Belle can have a support to hold on to for when Gold is an actual evil person again and again again. And the fact that they killed him in the worst way possible is just so disappointing

If Neal was still alive, Rumple wouldn’t have gone back to his evil ways or at least to the extreme season four made him. Neal is really the only one that Rumple is scared to lose. Compared to having Belle alive with him for the remaining seasons, Neal had a much bigger influence on him for literally one and half season.
Truly incredible that Gold/Rumplestiltskin wasn’t the Cowardly Lion analog since his whole story is about him being a coward and learning how to have courage without hiding behind his power.
his whole overcoming his cowardness comes later, he's absolutely failing this task in season 4 he halfasses it in season five then regresses and stays in a weird oh i could be a saviour shtick
by the time of season three he really was the big brain given how we slowly found out he orchestrated everything from the creation of the curse to moulding regina into someone who'll be desperate enough to cast it and then lying in waiting for 28 years oblivious because he KNEW his plan would work. rumple was playing 3d chess back then

@@calamondin8918 in my opinion his venture to find neal again was successful and it's his biggest and most important one. also the move to steal the dark one title back after killians death was very good. his plan to get back into storybrook after belle banished him also worked out fine. he had his fair share of failed plans but some of them were in fact successful and subtle

It would genuinely be so funny if Henry tried to explain a non-magical version of how Emma and Hook met. Just trying to tell a girl he likes about how his mum’s partner used to date his paternal grandmother then later adopted his dad. Between that and his adoptive mother being his step great grandmother, he’s got a great litmus test to see how people will react to the magic

If they stick around long enough to get to the magic portion, they’re a ride or die.
So maybe a spoiler but the last season of this show actually features Henry's daughter trying to get her parents, who've been memory cursed, back together. I did not watch enough of the season to know how that worked out but it's truly so insane.
I know its because Sebastian left to go to the MCU (and good for him because i am, at the end of the day, a Bucky Barnes *Stan*), but I love that Jefferson and his daughter just fuck off after Season 2. They find each other, they fuck off, and presumably live happily ever after in... Somewhere? Absolute King behavior 👑👑

As someone who watched the entire series (I have been through so much) some of you cannot possibly comprehend how funny this season is for me. Times were simpler then.

the way that when i want to watch some ouat that isn't the most insane thing ever I watch the last two episodes of this season (i've just washed my hands, thats why they're wet. No other reason) and those two episodes involve a woman and her boyfriend having to parent trap her parents to ensure that she's born and then the canon events of the show change and also her mum "would you still love me if i was a worm"s her way out of being burned alive is a testament to how increasingly off the rails this show gets
i've stopped after season 4 and i am both very worried and impatient for the future now

In Neal is alive timeline, I would love an episode where Neal is super excited for the Super Bowl and bonds with Henry over football while Hook is just S T R U G G L I N G to eat buffalo wings with one hand the whole episode. And the B plot is Gold hiding that he has an illegal gambling ring over the game gathering bets from everyone and hiding it from Belle but then Belle finds it and her issue with it isn’t the illegal underground gambling it’s that the payout ratios aren’t set up fairly.
I wish so deeply that OUAT had more human world focused one-off episodes like this, there is so much untapped comedic potential. And Neal WOULD be a sports guy, you're so correct

Because when me and my dad watched that episode when I was a teenager we couldn’t stop laughing bc the Scottish accent he was putting on was from the opposite side of Scotland that Robert Carlisle is from. My two top Things I Am Baffled By about this season:
1) BLACKBEARD??? I know he gets a brief reference in the book Peter Pan, but...they know Blackbeard isn't a fairy tale character right? Did they forget he was a real guy that actually existed in real life??
2) I'm so disappointed they introduced a plot point as high-concept and weird as "there is a secretive organization trying to destroy magic" and then they were like "actually that's too cool for our show, it's just Peter Pan doing a prank"
Ngl 11 year old me was SO happy that there wasnt actually a magic destroying organization cause i wanted them to all keep existing magically without any serious threat. i wanted a show with 0 conflict 💀💀💀

Not just because his character had so much potential, but it also just seems like bad story writing?? Like, this story only takes place bc Rumple wanted to find his son. Regina was a pawn in Rumple’s plan to find his son. If Bae had never disappeared, then Rumple wouldn’t have cared how mad Regina was, there never would’ve been a curse. The ONLY REASON that there was a curse and Emma was the savior was so Rumple could find his son. Then Rumple finds him, they go on some adventures, Rumple KILLS HIMSELF to save his son… and then what, the writers decide Neal served his purpose and they just??? Throw him away?? So we can get Rumple back and give Emma and Hook the spotlight?? Neal’s character deserved so much better!!

Neil's, like, some kind of fridge-nuke, which is to say he's fridged but it goes off like a nuke. He's just enough of a character that we mourn his lose as much as anyone, but he only exists to give LITERALLY EVERYONE man-pain(gender inclusive). Man-pain being the sort that provokes revenge and bad interpersonal decisions, as opposed to victorian widow pain which provokes despair and self-destruction.
I can't believe Neil ends up the Uncle Ben of OUAT; literally everyone else dies and shakes it off like a migraine, but Neil bless him stays dead.

Also it establishes just how utterly insane the age gap there was. Like Leopold was one foot in the grave marrying this woman who was in her mid twenties at the LATEST. Like sure it’s normal in a fantasy setting but it’s still crazy

Because the only people who would care about her, enough to put aside bad feelings and stop fighting, would be her parents. Everyone else is there for their own selfish reasons. Gotta love main character plot devices.
Well, Hook is in love with her, and Regina knows Henry would be pissed if she let Emma die (and he knows she could save her with magic), so there's that.

I am questioning why Emma thought jumping off the ship would stop everyone from fighting. She was basically saying she believes her life is more important than anything people are fighting over. Holding grudges is a specialty of everyone on the ship. Except, perhaps, her parents.
@@sarahkwast1250 I mean she had one parent in each fight, so even if Hook and Regina didn’t care about her enough to protect her, I doubt Snow and Charming would let their arguments carry on while their daughter was actively drowning. I think it was less main character plot device and more ‘I believe my parents will put their issues aside for me, even if the ex-villains won’t’
And even she was just thinking ‘I’m the saviour, they need me’, she probably believed Regina and Hook would be self-interested enough that they’d try to keep her alive to make sure they can escape Neverland, especially since her parents would absolutely lose their no killing rule if they let her die

I think the reason Pan let Neal leave Neverland is because he knew he would be Henry’s father. Coz Felix has a drawing of Henry when Neal was still a kid so Pan could probably see the future and knew it was the way to become immortal

Ohohoho I disagree! I think Neal was always gonna lose that love triangle. From the Moment his backstory with Emma was introduced in brief flashbacks the SAME episode Hook had that pornographic bandaging scene it was Over for him.
He’s also like… the only not model-looking important character on the show, that can’t be good if you’re supposed to compete with the guy who’s Always in eyeliner.
I’m not a Neal hater, I like the dude even, the reminds me of my favourite love interest from a different show even, but God was he never a choice. I think they wanted a cute little fanfiction episode, they pull the same shit at least two more times and Neal’s flashbacks were there for the unconvincing illusion of the show not forgetting him.

I’m so glad you addressed not only Hook and Neal’s underrated relationship but also how much of a disservice it was to take Neal out of the show! I watched this while it aired and was in the fandom and when I tell you I LOVED Neal the MOST out of ALL these characters, I’m not even kidding!! He was such a good man! He just wanted to be a good father to his son, to make it up to Emma in some way (he definitely wanted to get back together with her but he was always respectful that she may not want the same and just wanted her to be happy no matter what), and to repair his relationship with his father which has caused him SO much grief and trust issues. He lived a whole life on his own when I imagine it would have been hard for him, he fell in love and wanted to spend the rest of his life with Emma but got strong armed into letting her save the world, and is genuinely a really kind person and this is how the writers repay him?? Just let him be Henry’s father PLEASE! Literally your rant about what they could have done with Neal instead of killing him off has gone through my head on an endless loop since that man died on screen in the year of our Lord 2014.
Also, Neal could have been so helpful for Rumple actually having a redemption arc with lasting impact. Like, can you imagine a timeline where Neal’s dislike of magic becomes a sticking point in their relationship? He just gets sick of his dad being addicted to this primordial evil magic and says, once again, “hey, please stop, this is really hurting our relationship.” Maybe Hook has a talk with him and helps him sort out his feelings about it, which would also allow so much development between Hook and Rumple, thus better explaining why they relax around each other. Can’t really go hating each other when the grown son you have shared custody of loves you both!!! Take THAT! Plus it would open up so many doors for co-parenting hijinks between the Regina-Emma-Neal triangle 😭
Anyway, all that to say I’m definitely going to revisit my favorite OUAT Neal-centric fanfics after this
