pd: fun fact, decalcomanie didn't do as well on charts (not as good as you are the best), but after mamamoo performance of it on the Blue Dragon Awards (A show award of actors that are usually super serious and that never show reactions to performances) where they used a lot of adlibs of kdramas and movies during the performance they went viral bc of how well that public reacted to them and they got a win almost a month after its release and it kept on the charts for a long time after that

I don’t believe either have a music video, but they have live performances. I love that Mamamoo is at RBW because I feel like it’s the perfect company to allow Mamamoo to be creative and have fun like they want

fun fact : you're the best is actually considered their breakout song, they got their first win with it ( 8 wins in total ). Décalcomanie was released after You're the best, didn't do too well on charts at first, but after they performed at it at awards shows with some added fun adlibs, it became a hit and charted for a long time after. Now it considered on their most beloved and recognized song by general public.

Ah yes! Delcalcomanie was definitely a step away (or up) from their past songs at the time. Thing is, I think you’ll notice, each comeback/title track looks and sounds like just another rung on that circular ladder of genres they’re constantly climbing. I would say Decal is that “turning point” in a lot of ways. But in some others, kinda not, only because each era has always just felt so....Mamamoo, you know? (I don’t know how else to explain it lol)
“Modern” Mamamoo, as we know it, definitely rears their head at about the song “Starry Night” when they start the 4Seasons Project.
They did cut out a scene for Decal. Solar was the one who thought of it but I definitely agree that they needed to shoot it a different way. It wasn’t bad, it was just something that could and did easily come off as negative/non-consensual. The idea tho, definitely very Solar to be so bold.
As for the meaning of the song, it’s about budding desire and uhh deflowering lol Decalcomanie (as the song) is definitely an innuendo for sex. In French it’s the art of transferring an image onto another by pressing it onto another surface. In this case, it’s according to the lyrics like “you and I, same picture, I feel good,” and the b-rolls that had them in blindfolds and then had them taken off after the kiss, which was a symbolism for lost innocence. There’s all the other stuff too but I don’t wanna bog you down with too much info!

The thing is that Décalcomanie is one of those songs that people either REALLY LOVE or REALLY HATE. I love it, it's one of my favorite MMM title tracks ever, but I do know some people who really dislike it, especially, BECAUSE of the chorus and how different it is from the rest of vibe of the song (which, I don't understand. I love the chorus, but to each their own). You're the Best was their breakout song, this is the song that gave them their first ever Music Show win.
There is this video by the one and only Purple Hwake called MAMAMOO: A HISTORY OF CRACK SONGS in which they cleverly (and hilariously) explain the meaning behind all of their crack songs. There are songs in it which you haven't listened to, like AZE GAG, Sleep in the Car, ZzZz, Girl Crush, Recipe and Waggy (b-sides), but it'd be fun to watch you react to this video at some point =)
Very perceptive comments on Decalcomanie for a first view, tho obviously you had done your research so you had an idea of what you were getting into. I thought removing the blindfolds symbolized sexual awakening.
Regarding the controversy and re-edit, Solar simply said that she didn't have a problem with the original scene. I don't know whether it was her idea but it wouldn't surprise me - she takes concepts to the limit and it is a song about dangerously passionate feelings after all. Solar being Solar is even more extra than Mamamoo being Mamamoo. MMM MVs often feature each member's personal take on the emotion of the song, most prominently in the 4 Season 4 Color project, and I think that's what we get in Decalcomanie's kissing scenes. One of the things I love about them is that they're not coy about sex. It's esp notable considering that idols aren't supposed to have actual sex lives, just the imaginary shipping fantasies of fans.
You're the Best was their first #1 hit and earned them their first music show wins so I don't think Decalcomanie can be considered their breakthrough song but Decalcomanie is an iconic, quintessential Mamamoo song for sure and it's one of the songs they've continued to perform live on a regular basis.
someone else explained the korean use of the word 'decalcomanie' quite well, so won't repeat it here, and that's why aspects of their choreo were mirrored throughout the song, not just the mirror bit there... also, thank you so much for noticing that instantly with solar/wheein! so many reactors miss that until it's moonbyul/hwasa, mostly because of their obviously different hair colors
you were almost right, in a way, with the 'is this a discrete rendezvous type of thing?' question. in south korea, there's a concept of a woman blossoming after her first kiss... their quaint and kind of cute (and sort of prudish) take on 'deflowering'. that seems to be what the mv was about. the four girls wanting to experience that, but they became hunters seeking a man they were just going to use and toss away, all while making the man think he was the one doing the hunting. that's part of the cheering when they're back together at the end. all four got what they wanted, the guy no longer matters to them, lets go out and party
the song played during the kissing is called "draw draw draw" or just "memory", from the 'memory' album. it's very much a christmas song, and has its own mv. those scenes are also of the women blossoming/awakening, though with the fruit juices being sprayed everywhere, not sure we can actually keep it at the 'first kiss' that korea seems to expect...
also, an interesting bit with the guy is that the actor was gay, which seems to be one of the reasons he was selected, in the hopes that the girls would feel more comfortable interacting with him knowing he wouldn't be trying anything. they were all still rather awkward around him, though; esp wheein, as seen in the behind the scenes mmmtv of this film shoot
and then wheeimple did a good explanation of how this song did, somewhat poorly at first, but picked up after their live performance on the blue dragon awards due to the adlibs and the way the actors responded (bda and other actor award shows are usually known as 'graveyards' to entertainers because next to no one in the audience responds to the music, they just tend to sit through everything stonefaced and clap a bit at the end. mamamoo weren't having that)
there are a lot of fantastic live performances of "decalcomanie", particularly at award shows of various sorts. and some of the outfits are just... no words. i still can't get over the 2016 kbs song festival "you're the best"/"decalcomanie" stage and outfits. byul's biker jacket and jeans, solar's leather jacket and leather pants, hwasa's slightly oversized sweater with killer boots, but especially wheein reminding everyone just how dangerous she can be when she wants... aspects of this performance were also inspiration for the queendom performance of the same song (which was choreographed by the initial dancer who opens that performance up. he's a friend of wheein's but i won't give a dissertation on him here). i also want to say that the band used in this performance was onewe before they were onewe, but it's not easy to tell. the keyboardist is playing a keytar, though, and dongmyeon does love the keytar...
also, "decalcomanie" was one of the turning points for their music like you mentioned, or more... an awakening, i guess? they've had many of these throughout your career, since they're constantly trying and incorporating new things, so it sometimes feels kind of like they're reinventing themselves every comeback while at the same time just revealing more of themselves, since it's so easy to see how consistently they are themselves, even when they change. like you feel it was always there already but you can see it now that attention was called to it

Decalcomanie are 1000/10. its all member's era. hevery second of the MV visuals attacked and it aesthetic are something else, it will be always my fav comeback of MMM. I will always prefer the performance video for Decalcomanie because watching Mamamoo hop around in high heels is kind of a spectacle and there's no weird romantic subplot. Male actors in Mamamoo videos became sparse after this and not as a romantic interest ever again. I think it's more of a move to center the artists in MVs than any actual intent to say that boys are yucky though. 😂
Surprisingly, when Decalcomanie first came out it didn't chart very high and many people were saying it didn't fit Mamamoo's image. However, Decalcomanie broke records when it slowly climbed up the charts to #1 and stayed in the top 10 for WEEKS. It has also gained the reputation as one of the songs that represent Mamamoo the best

The Jazzy Break is actually "Memory" (who has an actual MV btw), a song from the same mini-album as Decalcomanie. Like other said, "You're the best" is their break out song and if u think this is peak mamamoo (musically or visually) ....... OH BOY ur not ready!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but decalcomanie (in Korea) often refers to people who look similar and/or mirror images. This is because the original word means an art technique where an image is transferred to another material. (Imagine stamping a paper. The image that comes out is mirrored from the stamp. That's how I understood it, anyway.) That said, the song itself is meant to refer to how lovers often end up resembling each other. I love how this word is reflected in their choreography. Not just the mirror scene, but also just in the dance moves themselves. Decalcomanie is commonly known in English as "decal" which is a sticker... yes, it is an artform when it is used for art but mostly decals are stickers that companies use for advertising and KPOP groups used to promote themselves....

You're definitely right about Décalcomanie being one of Mamamoo's most iconic songs, and it does mark the beginning of a turning point in their music. I'm actually really excited to see your reactions to the rest of their title tracks from here, because the way they start to explore a bunch of different sounds while always keeping that distinctively "Mamamoo" feel is pretty amazing.
6:39 if you liked this song you'd also really enjoy Sleep in the Car and AGE GAG because those are also two of their crack songs. The first one being them complaining having to sleep in the car with their makeup on, because of tight scheduling, the latter being an array of dad jokes
I’ve now watched all of your Mamamoo contents… and I LOVE IT. I feel like you totally understand this group in a way that most reactors don’t. I love how you notice all the detail. FUN FACT: I was working in Seoul when this MV came out and it was VERY controversial. And honestly it was not all positive. I remember a lot of my female students complained it was too sexy. At this stage Mamamoo were pretty much household names already, and I will never forget being in the staff room and hearing 2 Korean teachers discussing Hwasa. They were complaining that she was too curvy and her skin was way too dark. Sadly, even now Hwasa is a hot topic, with lots of Koreans saying she is ‘too western’. But yes, your right, this comeback took them from ‘celebrities’ to ‘mainstream IDOLS’. After this they exploded in Korea and Japan.
If you liked Taller Than You, you would definitely enjoy "Sleep in the Car"--which is like an upgraded version of taller than you.
Mamamoo's true break out was You're the Best although Um Oh Ah Yeah bought their name out. But you're right! Decalcomanie is Mamamoo's signature song in South Korea alongside Starry Night. Its truly the most popular, highest streamed Mamamoo songs! And iconic too

The most unique thing about this crack song is it did so well on the charts! And was a runner up for SOTY February at Gaon Chart! One of their most successful songs even if its a pre-release 😂
oh, so many of mamamoo's albums have 'that wacky song' on them like what you talked about. the girls and the rbw producers/composers/lyricists love them precisely because it allows them to do whatever they want... even though the agency and group are basically built around that already. songs like "freakin' shoes" or "aze gag" or "waggy" spread throughout their discography. most don't have mvs but many have live performances since they're frequently the ones the group promotes alongside their title tracks. oh, and there's also hwasa's "pink panties" which *does* have an official mv that looks like a fan edit...but is on their channel
"taller than you" really does make everyone go 'waitwhat' when they first hear it and is exceptionally catchy. it's the first of their two hiphop songs as a group (the second one is another comedy one that doesn't sound like it is, "sleep in the car"). i know you know each pair is just 1 cm apart in height, but they used to bicker quite frequently over that (at least up until "egotistic", so wouldn't be surprised if it still happen when they use heels. but they haven't all been using heels in all their videos or performances lately). their ceo watched them bickering several times, then said he wanted to make a song about it with them, a way for them to burn off their frustrations without getting upset at each other. so, "taller than you" was born
and when they were filming the mv for "taller than you", at like 3 in the morning, solar and wheein were filmed by mmmtv having a conversation about being exhausted but needing to stay to continue filming, and how the one not needed instantly could go take a nap in the car, but would have to do that in full makeup for when she got called. again, the ceo watched this recording and was 'i want to make a song out of this, too'. and mentioned that to wheein... who later pointed it out to solar when the two had another similar conversation... and because of that, the song "sleep in the car" was not only created, but also has lines about 'the ceo saw this' and 'i guess we're making it into another song'. there's actually a video out there that specifically puts all these clips togther, i believe it's titled 'how mamamoo makes songs'
one thing that i love about "taller than you" also makes me sad every time i see it. the dog you saw in the video is jjingjjing, solar's salt and pepper schnauzer that had been with her for 18 years. sadly, she passed away early last year (and solar waited more than a month to even tell the other members of the group, though i think byul knew). thankfully, jjing had a full life and got immortalized in the videos for two songs from this album, "taller than you" and "my hometown"
('melting' was their first full-length album, with 'reality in black', which "hip" is on, being their second. 'melting' had four songs with mvs, though two didn't really get promoted much. "you're the best" was the title track, "taller than you" was the promoted b-side, then "my hometown" and "recipe" both also got mvs, though the "recipe" mv is... weird. it doesn't actually highlight the song, but uses it as the constant background music for a 6 minute cooking challenge between moonsun (moonbyul/solar) and wheesa (wheein/hwasa) that their staff determined the winner of. the only version of this i know of is on dailymotion instead of youtube)
also, i seem to recall some people saying that "taller than you" actually charted pretty high on the korean hiphop charts but i never actually tried to see if that was true or not. kind of ridiculous if it is

Decalcomanie is unforgettable song for all South Korean people. This is where Moonbyul gets her name as the ULTIMATE GIRL CRUSH OF THE KPOP INDUSTRY. She asked out on a date the most famous actor during there performance on Drama Award Show. From that on they stole the hearts of almost all Korean actors and actresses 😁

A song on the EP Pink Funky was their first departure from retro with "Um Oh Ah Yeh" one year after debut. By the time they released their Album Melting, that jazz inspired retro had nearly disappeared. Decalmanie was released on the next EP Memory in November 2016.

I LOVE 'decalcomanie'. When I first listen to it, it was on loop for months. Seventeen and Mamamoo did a cover of each other songs where Seventeen did a cover of 'Decalcomanie' and Mamamoo did a cover of 'Adore u'. IT"S AMAZING! You should really check it out! They also did a collab and it was AWESOMEEEEE!!! I cried after watching it multiple times.

Decalcomanie was a bit of a transition from old mamamoo to new mamamoo. It was the 1st mini album released after their 1st full length album Melting ("you're the best" being the title and "1cm" it's pre-release). All their title tracks after have had more mature vibes, so yeah I'd like to think of it as a turning point😅

Yeah Byul's verse is always meaningful and most of the time is even the highlight of the song, imo.
Funny enough, the GP didn't immediately fall in love with Decalcomanie mainly because they respond better to "brighter" Mamamoo like in Um Oh Ah Yeah and You're The Best. But now it's one of (or THE) Mamamoo life song and one that Koreans easily sing along to even if they're not moomoos

Hey KP, as always loved your reactions :) I found this video that shows a side by side comparison of the edited and unedited versions of Décalcomanie. So I thought I would share it with you. Also I am linking a short explanation vid for you about Décalcomanie. It helps explain the visuals in the MV. I also heard in an interview with the members that the changing from the white to the black dresses in the MV was meant to show going from innocence to womanhood, and if you read the lyrics it's about a night of passion. They said with this song they wanted to show a sexier side of Mamamoo.
People did get upset with the first version of the MV because of the elavator scene with Solar and her guy. I think it was just shot wrong. I think it was meant to be a man sees a woman, and is so attracted to her he grabs her and kisses her, she pulls back, because she doesn't know him, but then decides she wants to kiss him to because she realizes she is attracted too. But Solar, and the male lead just aren't that good at acting, so it came out looking like he was forcing himself on her, and I think she was told to "fight him", and that made it worse, and the whole thing turned into a huge mess. So they instead of doing the smart thing and just not using it, they unfortunately put it into the video, and the rest as they say is history.

Oh my god decalcomanie is probably one of my favorite mamamoo songs ever but the extended cinematic exploration into the female orgasm makes it my least favorite mv. such a travesty because every other part of it is SO GOOD and so beautifully shot
i loved the aesthetic of the mv but yeah i wish they cut that part out or made it shorter at least - it felt unnecessarily long. also, the other song transitioned back into the actual song so abruptly that it felt a little awkward and confusing. but still, decalcomanie is still one of my favorite mamamoo title tracks.
Yup agree, that cinematic part was too long. They should have kept it to just 3-4 seconds; it broke the rhythm of an otherwise awesome MV/song.
The edited version that doesn't break up the song is much better. Still love everything else about this video, especially the mirror dance, vocal power, and Moonbyul rap.

I saw Delcalcomanie when it came out, and it made me feel uncomfortable watching that cut scene XD. I agree with the way the shot was filmed making it look awkward, but that did not stop me from loving the video and the song. My favorite part is the mirror dance between Solar/Wheein and Moonbyul/Hwasa. And I was bopping to the song for months despite the song not doing well in the beginning. It made me happy how they performed the song in those actor awards because they're usually not smiley type of people and more serious.
You're the Best was the song that gave them their first win and the song that introduced me to Mamamoo by my favorite girl group (Girls' Generation - Seohyun singing a cover of it on masked singer).
Yeah, the difference between the original and the edited version of Decalcomanie is only like . . . 1/2 a second or so (it's not much) but . . . oy . . . The original was VERY hard to watch that scene.
OTOH, the way it is now . . . it's passable, and the rest of the video & song is so spectacular.
Mamamoo has lots of crack songs, all worth listening to 😂 Fun fact: not sure about the members but Solar is a big fan of old school hip hop and she and Wheein are actually AMAZING at freestyle rapping!
Decalcomanie is probably one of my favorite title tracks, it's so soo good. Technically, the MV is actually really good and well done but I don't watch this often because it's a bit too long for a rewatch for me 😅 The mirror scenes are the best bits of the video for me too. Mamamoo released a noir-like teaser for Wind Flower back in 2018 and I kinda want them to do a concept similar to that someday. Thank you for another great reaction!

For mamamoo there wasn't really a song that blow up. most people will was that you're the best is actually considered their breakout song, but if you look statistically that Um oh ah yeh made them populair. you're the best gave them there first win. decalcomanie made them stay and yes i am made there name go in to history. in other words a very natural

I believe Chuck is the only song in the album that was produced by someone outside RBW. That's why it has this unique & different vibe to it.

If you liked '' Taller than you '' I bet you will love '' Sleep in the car '' it's a song where they complain (ofc they weren't really complaining its was all jokes) about having to sleep in their car due to late mv filming while having their make up on. When the CEO heard the girls complain he just went like '' yup let's make a song '' and that's how it was born. Mamamoo has a lot of crackhead songs since their CEO is a crackhead himself lol

@kpopprince This is their entire concert which would be better fit for patreon. Their 1cm stage starts from 2:29:46 and goes until 2:47:00 and is followed by Waggy. This is like an entire play about how the members grew, with Wheein becoming the tallest but jealousy forced the Moomoo god to punsh and shrink them for their pettiness. Plenty of other iconic moments in this concert including Solar's infamous bts Fire cover which you might also break up and watch on Patreon if you want.
@@kalaksed I love that video too. It's just amazing that their company decided fairly early on to let their talent guide them and encourage their ideas and push them to be even more of themselves. RBW isn't perfect but they always deserve respect for letting Mamamoo be Mamamoo.
Yeah the scene that was edited out was the one where Solar was leaving the elevator and the guy pulls her back in and presses her against the wall, in here it just cuts to rose petals as soon as he pulled her. I think it was suppose to read more romantic or seductive, like he swept her off her feet kind of deal, but it could also very easily be seen as a man being aggressive and pretty much forcing himself on to her, so they edited out.

Original MV had the elevator scene where the male actor grabs Solar edited out, because it came off as being dating violence.
