  • The American Legion Riders are a powerful and productive program of The American Legion. With chapters in all 50 states, the Legion Riders contribute time and energy to support our troops and their families and to promote the values of the Sons of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and The American Legion.

To me (Legionnaire, ALR), the biggest values of the ALR program are recruiting and providing an organized outdoor recreational activity around which fellow veterans can bond and socialize. Legion Baseball is great and all, but it's for teenagers. Scouting USED TO BE great, but it is also for kids. Those are great OUTREACH programs that provide service to the community and Legion families. Same with the shooting sports program. Only ALR is an official, Legion-wide, outdoor recreation program which appeals primarily to ADULT Legionnaires, veterans, SAL, and Auxiliary. Parades, funeral escorts, poker runs, and what not are great and help show the flag for the Legion and raise $$$ for good causes; but these are by-products of the vet-to-vet RELATIONSHIPS we build around motorcycling. When active duty military and veterans join the Legion to join ALR, they don't do it to raise $$$, pull additional funeral details, or ride in a local parade. They do it to build relationships with other motorcyclists who are also mil-vets. But somehow, none of the leaders in this video seemed to make much mention of this beyond "it's a great recruiting tool for the active duty folks." This lack of clarity of vision and priorities is a bit concerning and we hear it brought up with regularity by members complaining about "too much emphasis on fundraising." The emphasis needs to be on FUN and FRIENDSHIPS, motorcycle issues (safety, laws, tech, and local resources such as the best mechanic, best place to buy riding gear, best dealers, and best retrieval services in the area), Legion outreach, honor details, and THEN supporting other charitable causes through fundraising.

I was in the legion for four years, each year I asked "What have we done for any Veteran this year". Each year there was silence. VSO [ Veteran's Service organization ] means veterans serving others, not service *FOR* Veterans. Usually the most they do is have a VA "service officer". These people are trained and certified by the VA, so guess where their loyalty lies???

That's why there are separate patches, to Identify where you stand!

There is no use of the American Legion logo uses in the ALR unless you are a Legionnaire in good standing. ALR is a program of the Legion open only to Legionnaires, SAL, and Aux members in good standing. Legionnaires can wear the Legion logo in addition to the ALR patches. Additionally, there are authorized bottom rockers (back patch) that say: Legionnaire, Veteran, Squadron (SAL), or Auxiliary identifying which of the AL groups one belongs to. And those of us who are Legionnaires often wear (it's up to the discretion of each local chapter) top rockers denoting the branch of service in which we served.
