- Full review of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R, including the 2.0-litre turbo engine, handling, ride, price, features and running costs.
The Honda Civic Type R is now priced at $72,600 driveaway in Australia, which is a huge increase on the old model. But, with many people calling this the best hot hatch on sale, is the new FL5 CTR worth big money?
The Civic Type R uses a 235kW (316hp) tune in Australia but overseas it has 243kW (325hp). It competes with the Volkswagen Golf R, Hyundai i30 N and hatches like the AMG A35 and A45 plus Audi S3 and RS3. The Civic is only available with a manual transmission and LSD.

$73,000 in U.S. $ as of 4.10.23 its $48711 U.S. and add the $20,000 dealer markup plus tax or on road cost. some will get them for msrp and turn around and flip them, looks like a fun car and its manual
Picked up mine this past easter weekend and absolutely love the updates over the FK8. Looking forward to many smiles per gallon!
Gets worse fuel economy than older models.
@@Mexxx65 if you're buying this car for fuel economy you've bought the wrong car
@@Mexxx65
Who cares?
@@santoshrathod123 But, there are plenty of much more affordable sports cars in au that can do both.
In many ways it's a downgrade. I've driven it. It's clinical but last gen was more fun
Previous Type R was also a 4 seater
I got one, i think it is definately worth it. ❤
The only time in my life im happy to live in Canada :)
Here in the uk I had the FK8 I decided to pre order this model before the dealership knew what the price was they had 12 other pre orders a month later the salesman who sold me the previous car told me the price and I cancelled my order the salesman told me 11 of the pre order's had also cancelled so in my opinion it is not worth the price
2 things.
Previous generation was not a 5 seater as mentioned.
Wireless Android Auto is available.
Extremely nice looking car.
How do people fit in a mx5? I'm only 5 9 or 10 and I can't rev match in one. My poor back
I think these look great.
They absolutely nailed the styling.
And now I want one.
Hate the price, love the car
It’s a bloody good looking car and the performance will speak for itself.
Could I afford one? Yer probably but I just can’t justify paying that for a Honda hatch. I’d prefer to spend and extra 10k and buy a 25 year old GT-R tbh…
Buy a very very old GT-R for 10K more than this awesome-driving car?
What performance its has 300hp maybe 270 to the wheels? That kinda performance was impressive in 1995.
As the previous owner of 2 FK8S(one stock and one modified)…anything above sticker is not worth it! It’s reliable yes BUT you’ll be spending thousands in parts and labor to give it some kick. Stock and even modified…still hard to launch off the line. New one although cleaner visually is slower and heavier than FK8. I already planned on waiting 2 years at least IF I decide to buy another and the market cools. Even if I were lucky enough to buy an FL5 for 5k US over MSRP(45-50k) I’d still have mods, wheels, labor adding approx. 12-15k. For that kind of money it has me leaning in the direction of other factory engineered performance cars that are turn key right off the show room floor, much faster and can be financed. Just my 2 cents…
I'm on my second FK8. My current one is lightly modified for track (which I took it to today). I just can't justify the additional cost for what is a very similar car. The same goes for the Integra Type S.
@@touringteg Agreed! It’s better cosmetically(I like both personally) but the difference in performance however slight can be surpassed for much cheaper by modding an FK8. My last FK8 had Titan TS-5 wheels and Michelin Pilot Sports…the same tire size as the new FL5 except mine were 18 inch rims. Better for tracking or comfort/flat tire magnets etc. The market will eventually correct itself after everyone is done trying to be the first on their block to have one!😁
Idk why you are worried about launch in a FWD car, FK8 is slower on track than fl5. Interior and build quality is much better in fl5. Having experienced and owning the fl5 its pretty clear its an upgrade thats worth it, not if u pay markup though. Im not sure if youve tracked your cars but it doesnt need more "kick" out of the box is plenty fun on track and tame on the drive home.
@@EricTsu The CTR is not a quick car so adding FBO is pretty much required. In the real world aside from some back canyon road, other drivers will easily pull away from you from a dig/crossing an intersection etc. A performance car should have just that…performance! It handles like a slot car yes and it’s bulletproof but my point was for the money that you’re spending plus the inevitable modifications…there are better turn key factory engineered hot rods that come with more performance and a warranty. I’ve always loved driving manuals and Honda has always made some of the best but my current 2.0T Accord/Auto sure is a more street friendly/fun daily driver that is a perfect sleeper for me until my next hot rod materializes.😁
@@justwingingit1 Really dumb take lol. Your ideology goes against the intended purpose. Like the guy said in the video, this is like buying a miata and then realizing you don't have the fastest 0-60.
The hybrid is absolutely fantastic though
That's their best car in my opinion.

Type R and gold chopstick would be nice for Asian
Yeah Asian university students just can’t Australian- made junk.
Hotly anticipated, but it seems like Honda doesn't want to sell these.
So if 'enjoyment' is the goal, then I won't worry about constantly calling dealers and be told that it's "sold out" when I know for a fact that not a single one has been sold where I live.
I'll just upgrade my FK8, it's faster anyway.
The FK8 isn't really faster, it's maybe similar in a drag and slower round a track.
They've all sold out and it's impossible to get one. The UK is still receiving a mix of 1st and 2nd batch cars (mines due for delivery June in 2nd batch) but each dealer will be lucky to get 3 a year.
Fk8 is only slightly faster in a straight line due to fl5 having a shed load more downforce, fl5 is faster where it counts 👍🏻
The allocations have sold out. You won't see any brand new in Honda dealerships. I have seen two though; one in black and one in championship white.
Honda can't make them any faster. It's concentrating on making the real profitable family vehicles.
@@celliott16 straight line speed doesn't count on a track?
piped in sound should be easy to eliminate
We are lucky here in Australia. Honda has 1 price promise for all their cars so dealers cannot mark them up and consumers can’t haggle for less than MSRP. In the US, Honda dealers are allowed to mark these cars up and people are paying up to $60k - $70k USD. In the UK these are going for £47 thousand pounds at MSRP which converts to $87,400 AUD. We are definitely luckier than others who wants this car.
We're better off than Europe and the US with Japanese made vehicles and LCT doesn't really impact prices either. People bemoan Honda's fixed price guarantee but it stops price gouging for new vehicles.
It's about 72k in Australia including on-road costs. Mine is 75k with options and a 20 month wait. The agency model is an advantage in such cases of high demand cars like the type r, but for general consumers, I think it's a loss as you can't use dealers to compete with each other to drive the price down. I still think we're overpaying for this vehicle at 72k. The previous was about 60k on road and there are minimal differences bar the aesthetics. The residual percentage of this car over 3yrs is about 74% which is actually high and I think after 2026, it may actually start to appreciate from the residual value
Yeah, but the overall car market in the US is the cheapest in the world.
@@slyarsenal I put a deposit on one in May last year and picked it up on the 27th of March. I got a few extras which came to about $73,600

Every Type R and performance Honda was a 4 seater including the FK8. The only exception was the NSX-R for obvious reasons.
Yeah, sorry about that.
Hello, Honda Accord Type R sedan?
@@Mexxx65 you are right the Accord was the other exception 👍🏼
No one will sell for MSRP. Most want 7500 over that plus all the other fees another 3500
Did engineers overtyre it (on 265 wide) for track time bragging rights at a cost of on public dry road enjoyment.
For Australian roads they did. For track nah. They over did the suspension though , way too harsh. It's almost unbalanced in R mode.
Its the REASON its marginally better than any other smaller tired FWD hot hatch.
@@Mexxx65 Better on a 160km/h+ smooth track for sure. Better on 80-100km/h targa type roads? I am not sure the equation of wide track at both front and rear, very wide tyre front and rear, long wheelbase - given it is FWD, is going to compute as the 'best' on enjoyment.
@@minimumtrade FWD Hot Hatches are all about front end grip. And with those 265s it currently has the most front end grip, in any road situation.
Still waiting for the Nurburgring record. Don’t think it can beat the already over engineered FK8..
It destroyed the fk8 on Japan racing circuits
It pretty much did. It got 7:44, but the Nürburgring was a longer configuration for the FL5. I like the FL5, but not the price. I was lucky enough to get the FK8 for 34K no mark up brand new in 2017. So even at MSRP I can't justify this one.

Welcome, Dan Gardner!
Is it too expensive? Hell yes ! I would never pay that much for a hot hatch.
Now I watch the video to see your conclusion. 😆
“On Michelin PS4S, things can get slippery”
Hmm lost a bit of credibility on this comment given it’s one of the better wet weather tyres out there.
47K at my local Honda
I wouldnt say this isnt about track and about fun. This car is absolutely about track, being the fastest fwd car ever
Recently saw a video where the last R smoked the new one on a rolling start. The new one launched better and is a little better on the track. Not worth the upcharge.
@@timbro101470 yea I saw that video too. And the fk8 will always launch faster but everything about the fl5 is refined, like everything according to everybody meaning car reviewers and owners. Idk how much $73k pounds or whatever equates to usd, but the fl5 costs $43k usd vs fk8 $36k usd and the msrp upcharge is for all the refinement so it is what it is. But its def not worth any markup
The previous type r is not a 5 seater
Much nicer looking than the previous model. They tried too hard to make it look like a ferrari. This one is WAY cleaner
Sure it's a fantastic car and it looks great in certain colours but the eye watering price is a massive turnoff considering what other options are out there on the new and near new market albeit with differing driven wheels and engine configurations etc.
The motoring world has lost its collective minds since c-19 and people are prepared to wait years and pay crazy prices for new cars.

Nothing changed but the looks !!! The FK8 looks like a Type R,,this one is more for older people and i dont blame them lol,,They are aged people. FK8 is for younger people. The FK8 is the faster car in a straight line. Not to say this car is bad ,,just because this is the newer one it doesn't make the last one obsolete.

FYI, it’s AUD 141,000 here in Indonesia due to import taxes which I thought was from the UK like the previous gen. But since it’s from Japan, it’s way more ridiculous and overpriced. 🙂

The platform/formula of this type r has been around since 2015 theres been some tweaks and improvements of course which is normal as a successor comes along, whats not normal is to super inflate the price right there and then somehow the manufacturer deems it to be ok,. Its now trading for around 80k US btw, for a 4 cylinder thats been around for 20 plus years and somehow its a bargain? Nothing against the k series,. Short answer, NO. The Type R is not even worth sticker, let alone nearly double it. ~300hp is quite easy to come by anymore, especially when looking at "enthusiast" Model cars. TRD camry, GTI, Golf R, Elantra/Veloseter N, any charger/challenger, k5 GT, stinger, WRX, and sooooo many more options out there, all under 40k unless you want more luxury.

Type R in comparison is similarly priced to its key rivals if not cheaper. Everything has gotten more expensive - not just the Civic. By every media outlet going on about the price while giving absolutely no context to the current market, all they’re doing is distancing the market from true enthusiast products like the Type R.
