Committee of Privileges debate: Sylvia Lim on report's findings on Raeesah Khan and WP leaders

  • WP chair Sylvia Lim raised issues with the findings of the Committee of Privileges (COP). Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 15), she pointed out that if read in the proper context, her evidence is not inconsistent and not damaging to Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh.
    She also said she is "baffled" by the COP's conclusion that she had somehow recognised that Mr Singh had acted contrary to an MP's duty to tell the truth.
    She also raised concerns with the composition of the COP, saying it is overwhelmingly dominated by ruling party members. She said this does not bode well for a fair hearing.

      It’s not about whether RK started the lie, the fact that PS knew about the lie after speaking with RK and other reasons mentioned in the report, and ‘did ntg’ about it till she confessed sparks reasonable doubt that he in fact knew about it and did ntg to make the truth known is why he and his colleague is being targeted. Anyways they are not being charged as liars yet! Only COP finds them to have breached, hence have referred it to Public Prosecutor. PAP would’ve never handled it like how PS did! They would’ve immediately ask the person in qn to apologise for their untruth and relinquish their role! They wouldn’t have covered their lies with another bag of lies like what they think PS did. It’s ppl like u who are shallow in their thinking! U think politics is ok to lie blatantly infront of the entire country/world watching and expect the ruling party to let u off the hook?!?!? What would ppl think of that ? It’s ok to lie !?!?! The reason y SG is where it is, is because of honesty, integrity and discipline! If we were to slack on this we are setting a wrong precedence! Ppl myopic like u would believe PAP purposely doing this but you have clearly failed to realise the broader picture as to y they are going after PS and gang. There is no Pro-WP and Pro-PAP as the PM mentioned yesterday. There were only facts. And the fact is there is no direct evidence of PS lying in the COP. It's just perspective and missing context. I took some time to listen to the PM yesterday and all he did was nag to PS about lying in Parliament for 20 mins. Prove with no doubt that PS did lie first. Then can start nagging.

    • @betaunknown
      @betaunknown Před 2 lety

      WP took a wait and see approach to see if they were able to get away with it. PS isn't dumb - he wouldn't have told RK explicitly to 'take the lie to the grave' as this would implicate him directly later on. PS' instructions to RK were ambiguous and equivocal rather than explicit. He also admitted that WP members came to know about the lie during their August meeting but did not come forward with the truth because she was a sexual assault victim.
      Not all lies are explicit and obvious. Don't be naive.

    The intended referral to the public prosecutor of PS & FM has serious ramifications:
    Article 45 of the constitution:
    A court conviction may prematurely terminate the service of a member of parliament who has been duly elected by the people. Convictions in a court of law can disqualify an elected mp from parliament if the fine is $2000 or more.
    Contrast this with fines meted out by parliament itself under the parliamentary privileges immunities and powers act which can go up to $50000 but will not disqualify an mp from continuing to serve in this house..
    Is it politically motivated to have PS, the formidable opposition mp, removed from parliament?

    Why didn't Indranee refer RK's case to the PP?
    Because the case was so thin that it would be laughed out of court.
    RK said she accompanied a sexual assault victim to lodge a report. The victim came out crying because one police officer commented about her dressing and her drinking. Indranee accused her of smearing the Singapore Police Force. No court will connect the two. That's why Indranee kept the case within parliament where there was no cross examination of both suspect and witness.
    The COP did not even fulfill its remit of why RK lied.
