Small Shelf Layout Operations (Axton Turn) | River Road | Boomer Diorama ~ Vlog # 166

  • This is an HO (1/87) Scale Model Railroad Operation "Demo" on a (point-to-point) small shelf layout @ ( 2'X12' Feet). It is designed with "stub" end (off-layout) staging at each end.
    It is built in the style of a large diorama and meant to inspire as well as be functional and educational. The River Road diorama depicts a typical "last mile" operation by SRY Rail Link. It is these types of operations we often fail to model on our layouts because we focus on the big grandiose picture, which is often impossible to achieve, and imminently cost prohibitive for the average modeler. Some of the best modelers I have ever met know how to achieve this on a minimal budget, and footprint, by growing their skills through modeling rather than trying to build miles beyond their ability.
    Large layouts are great but they do not always translate to a realistic and immersive model railroad. A smaller footprint can be exploited if we focus in on the details and the "feel" of the prototype, rather than the almost unachievable larger concept that only grace the front covers of popular magazines.

      Funny you mention that. I just picked up a new set of (water-color) pencils. They add another dimension to weathering. You can draw a line and then touch it with a wet brush and it fades out while keeping the line. Hard to explain but very cool effect if you use them on flat Tamiya (XF) color. - very cool.

    wow - inspirational
    You say they're underrated - all the best layouts are all small shelf layouts - because you spend decades just perfecting it as a diorama and operating it deliberately and slowly - each rpm of the diesel (from the speaker) is heard and appreciated. Each wheel turn over a frog or switch is anticipated. The detail that can go into each weathered rusted bolt is intentional. And you don't need to rent a hall or spend $100k on a home addition to house it. (necessarily).

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před rokem +1

      Yes and yes. This was the reason for my design (moveable) component style for 'River Road.' A lesson learned from the 'Glover Road' layout. It is really the same philosophy as film set making and theater. Everything must be "wild" (moveable) for the camera, lights etc. I'm still working on better lighting though because you need to shoot miniatures with a certain FPS and pin-hole aperture for depth of field which requires maximum lighting. Video is incredibly challenging to shoot, especially with smaller scales like this. Cheers.
