  • Looming more than 1,000 feet over the Black Hills in Wyoming, Devils Tower, as it is called in the modern day, is recognizable for its unique shape and its claw mark-like striations that run up and down its surface on all sides. This incredible feat of nature did not go unnoticed by the indigenous peoples who have inhabited the area. Dozens of stories from a multitude of cultures have centered around the creation of Devils Tower, and many of them involve the presence of a gigantic grizzly bear with a vast appetite. This program will cover 2 stories, from the Kiowa and Lakota peoples respectively, on the creation of Devils Tower!

The Wyoming state History museum in Cheyenne has an exhibit of devil's Tower and recordings from native American sources. I actually heard the first one a little differently from there, specifically that the bear wasn't just a wild animal but an eldest daughter who turned into a bear and ate her family. She warned her siblings who demanded she play with them and become a bear, but they didn't listen. I think the moral of it was not to force people to do things they don't want to do?

There is something very biological about that tower and the surrounding area. I visited this place. It looks like a severed ankle. Tendons, etc. Like something really huge got stuck (in mud or whatever), keeled over and died. Leg got snapped and this all that remains. The soil in that area is a deep red. Something bled out.
While this might sound ridiculous, it makes more sense than the story of a large bear claws causing the marks on that structure.
