    What a great comparison! I think many, many families end up using multiple math curriculums, one more for teaching, and another more for practice, and I think that's a really helpful approach for many kids.

    It's a WIN that neither use Common Core! A few parents and I shared that many kids don't know how to tell time, cursive writing, count back change, address and envelope to mail, and etc unless they use their phones for help! 2008 was the year the school system decided to push kids school start dates later then they were suppose to start to "help kids sturggling" HUGE MISTAKE on them and to add this HORRIBLE Common Core to make it worse! I graduated with. GPA 4.0 and got a scholarship to UC Davis for their Vet program and this move by the school system is completely WRONG! The Gov. pushed this to keep the kids uneducated and to rely on the Internet for answers instead of what God gave them...their brains! I'm thankful for such programs like these that teach as close as the way I was taught in school.....basic life skills! Thank you sharing both programs.

    Also, you may want to mention, TGATB is a free download PDF now. I just printed it out with supplies I already had and just bought the box of manipulatives for $20. My daughter is only K4 this year but this was on her academic level so we are doing K5 for math and TGATB ended up being basically free. Since I wasn't sure how our days were going to go, I was happy to find TGATB. I put everything in sheet protectors so we can use dry erase and keep the book intact just in case we need to re do a lesson or for my 2 year old when she gets older.

    I bought the Abeka lesson plans k5 and the readers second hand. I did a happy dance because I bought it for a half the price brand new but I also got several things with it. Thank you for videos. I’m easing into homeschool with my son he’s 3 turning 4. We started in August I wasn’t expecting him to learn so quickly. I stumbled upon your k5 reading video and I am hooked! Thank you for your channel.♥️♥️♥️

    Great comparison! I purchased TGTB math 1 and 2 for my older two kids next year. My girl in kinder this year loved it and I think my upcoming 2nd grade son will really like it. But I already am planning on adding some supplements because I think they may need more practice problems.

  • @freelandtr

    I started my kindergartener with Abeka K5 workbook without teacher guide or lesson plans. I was afraid I was missing something so I opted to get TGTB k. We have continued with both and it is working very well. The grade 3 simply good and beautiful math lessons were too long for us without enough practice and teacher intensive. We switched to Abeka math 3 workbook and answer book and it as been working great even without the lesson plans.

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety +2

      I agree both of the k maths work well together. That’s interesting TGTB level 3 was too teacher intensive! But I can see that if you just use the workbook for 3rd grade Abeka how it’s much more straightforward. Love that you found what works! ☺️☺️

    Thank you for this! I am currently thinking of what to do for next year. My son thrived on Abeka 2nd grade curriculum but that’s with having the videos. I’m afraid if I switch to TGTB I won’t know what to do for 3rd grade without a video guide or if it will be enough for him. The lessons seem super short?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety +1

      Totally understandable! Yes the lessons are short but that’s only because this is for level K. If you’re unsure, you can always go online and download TGTB level 3 (it’s free) and print out the first few lessons to see how you both like it before committing to the entire curriculum.

    You must be reading my mind. I am trying to decide between sticking with Abeka or going to TGTB for 2nd grade for my daughter, so I can't wait for that video to come out. Although, I did the assessment from TGTB and my daughter can already pass into the 2nd grade book with them even though she has only finished 110 lessons of Abeka Arithmetic 1. Do you think TGTB seems like a gentler approach to math?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety

      After kindergarten Abeka is going to advance quicker than TGTB. If you go from Abeka 1 to TGTB 2 there will be a lot of review and overlap, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

  • @donnabolt5847

    Oh thank you! I have a daughter going in prek and my son is in K right now and want to switch from horizons. Was thinking TGATB but not sure they have enough practice
    My daughter is doing 4th grade math TGATB. this is first math she doesn't cry HOWEVER not enough practice so by time she gets to assessment she has forgotten a lot... :(
    Looking forward to your comparison with abeka for other grades to see if that might help her not forget. What do you think?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety +2

      I think if TGTB works for your kids don’t change it (especially if they’re finally not crying 🙌). You can always add a supplement or a math game or math app to get in the extra practice

  • @whitneyvelie2070
    @whitneyvelie2070 Před 2 lety +1

    Currently doing Abeka kindergarten with my oldest and thinking about moving to TGTB for first !! Do you think it would be a good fit for level 1 or repeat the level k ?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety +1

      I would have your child do the assessment for TGTB math to see where they place…it should totally be ok to go from Abeka k to TGTB 1. But again, do the assessment just to be sure (it only takes a few minutes).

  • @flourishing.flowers8201

    Would you say that for grades 1-5 that Abeka and TGTB cover about the same content ? I have been using Abeka and will be switching to TGTB but I'm nervous if it will have them fall behind and if TGTB has enough work for the kids to grasp the concepts

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety +1

      TGTB is ahead in that it covers more grammar concepts earlier on than Abeka. But with the new release of TGTB LA from level k-2, not sure how it will compare grammar wise.

      @@karenu.7500 We do a lesson in each math program each day.
      With TGATB I use a lower math level so it is more of a review. They introduce new concepts before Math U See so there is still some new items to use.
      My oldest is in 7th grade doing Epsilon and finished level 4 TGATB a week ago so start started level 5. My youngest is in 4th grade doing Gamma and level 3 TGATB.

      @@karenu.7500 I just want to add that I love Math U See. I like that it is tried and true, has been around for a long time, and goes through high school. So when my kids were struggling a little I added something else in the mix for this season. Which has helped a lot. The lessons are short in both and doesn't take that much extra time to do. Good luck.

    Something you mentioned in your video is the the Good and the Beautiful does not follow the common core. I am New to homeschooling and can you please explain to me if this is important and if you also use other materials to supplement with the good and the beautiful curriculum?

    • @thepracticalhomeschooler
      @thepracticalhomeschooler  Před 2 lety

      Common core is actually just a set of standards that students should know by the end of each year. But when many people refer to it regarding math, it’s a way of teaching math (reasoning and understanding the why behind the math problem, vs just memorizing the answer). Although neither program falls into that category, TGTB does offer more math theory and Abeka is very traditional. We supplement TGTB with Abeka
