    Holy crap. I can literally remember coming home as a kid on a rainy day and watching this. We recorded it on the vcr and watched It everyday for maybe a week. First we watched it with our siblings and then friends came over the next time to watch. Used to be a huge deal. MTV was amazing back then.

    Although Oasis were big in the mid 90s in the USA I don't think Americans quite got just how British Punk Rock 'n' Roll Oasis were = they were the biggest band in the world at that point and they just didn't give a flying fuck = makes me fucking love them even more = other bands would've given anything to be in their position and they just treated it with the don't give a flying fuck attitude that it deserved = for every American that hates Oasis = there will always be 1,000+ more people around the world that fucking loves them!!! How Oasis did not get at least one nomination at these awards in either the Best Group or Best Alternative categories is beyond me, especially when one considers how much air time MTV (and I’m talking American MTV, not just MTV UK or Europe) gave them that year with the MTV News (What’s the Story?) special and the infamous yet legendary Unplugged performance, as well as the videos from Morning Glory on regular rotation. And this attention and air time was well deserved, as 96 was no doubt the band’s peak year; they were truly the biggest band in the world, and in America, the only band which got more air time, both on radio and MTV, was the Smashing Pumpkins. Perhaps, it was due to the fact that these awards were later in the year in September, and it was MTV’s way of saying that they had their fill of Oasis, particularly Liam’s antics and Noel’s deadpan arrogance in interviews.
    What was interesting was to see how Oasis did not seem to care about their American TV performances, and that reflected in their appearance at the VMA’s that year. And Noel, completely fed up once again with Liam, was one week away from walking out on the band, ending the Morning Glory tour, and very seriously considering a solo career with limited touring, similarly to one of his heroes Paul Weller. But as stated in the band’s Behind the Music, his ‘resolve [to leave the band] disappeared one pint of beer at a time’. And hence, Be Here Now, which for me, is still a classic 👍

    • @darrenthomas7402
      @darrenthomas7402 Před rokem +3

      The reason is simple.... Though they were becoming very successful in America with Morning Glory selling 4 million within no time there (it was flying off the shelves especially from Xmas 95 to summer 96) the American media tried their best to destroy them and scupper their success (aswell as the band admittedly not playing the game) and they never really recovered after that. Be Here Now went straight in at #2 in America but lacked a big radio single and then success tailed off. Their record company also stopped promoting them properly in the States after that and so they struggled to regain big success. Saying that they got another Top 5 album Stateside with their last ever album so kudos to Oasis.

      @@darrenthomas7402 Sbould have released Stay Young as the first single, then Don't Go Away after that. They would have been lapped up by American Radio (and the latter was though didn't get the run it should have because it wasn't properly released)

      In United states, mainstream wants sad, depressive and posers bands (the ones that use makeup and the pentagrams). Which is the complete opposite of Oasis. Cheers.

      It's interesting you say "oasis didn't seem to care..." but really I think it was just Liam. I have 2 theories...Liam REALLY cared and believed Oasis wouldn't break America so he blew performances on purpose (This is Noel's theory) ...OR Liam felt like it was pandering to America and wanted to show them he didn't care about breaking there, kind of just to piss people off. I think it's a mix of both.
      I remember watching this live and laughing at him but also being like "wtf is he doing??" It kind of felt unnecessary and over the top, and like it felt forced

    • @kreemothedreamo
      @kreemothedreamo Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm one of those people that doesn't accept just one explanation for most things, so I think it's probably a little of both of your theories. But yeah, as a longtime American Oasis fan, I could tell both of the Gallagher brothers never really had any respect for both American media culture as well as the fickleness and superficiality of its popular culture, and that being the biggest band in the UK was all that mattered to them in terms of the level of popularity they actually cared about. Paolo Hewitt expressed this well when he said that Oasis just wanted to have the same appeal within the UK music scene as the Stone Roses, but with sustained success

  • @kreemothedreamo
    @kreemothedreamo Před 2 lety +4

    Along with this being Oasis’ peak year, coincidentally it was also the peak year for the VMA’s. It was all down hill from here, for this awards show, for MTV, for music videos, for popular music, and while I’m at it, for culture and the world in general. I just realized that when Oasis went down, the world went down too. Who here agrees? 🤔

    • @darrenthomas7402
      @darrenthomas7402 Před rokem

      Oasis still had good songs after this period but American radio ignored the band and their stupid record company didn't promote them anymore there. The song Stop Crying Your Heart Out (2002) should've been a massive hit in America, like it was everywhere else, and is one fine example of this
