    Punching Weight is such an incredible idea for a series, I really enjoy em. You've done RE1&2, and chance of a punching weight on RE3? Could be a nice tie-in for when RE8 releases and everyone's hyped 🙂

      @Michael Persico yeah but it was originally a remake of sweet home on the snes and even in the early stages of the playstation. So its kind of a grey area cause resident evil isnt a remake of sweet home and who knows when the idea of an original game happened in development. The idea started on the snes but resident evil started on the playstation more or less.

    The way randomizer on the N64 version is that almost all healing items and ammo are swapped out by ANYTHING that falls into that category and is for that character, even the quantity of ammo. The ammo from the corpse in the hall with the first Licker? Could be a herb, or could even be a dozen magnum rounds Leon. Key items and weapon placement stays the same, and some stuff like the three green herbs outside the office and ink ribbons all stay put. Just to ensure the player isn't 100% boned.

  • @IAmKillEveryone
    @IAmKillEveryone Před 7 lety +20

    Item randomization is exactly what it sounds like. All non-vital items to the story are randomized. Where there was a blue herb, now there could be shotgun shells.

    The Dreamcast Version is actually a port of the PC version with no screen tearing and uncompressed 480p cutscenes (PS1,N64,and GC run in 240i) Higher rez and smoothed out character models. The GC version is markedly inferior, I've tried both with their respective high resolution cables (vga on DC and component for GC) GC version is a direct port of the PS1 game without the smoothed out character models of the Dreamcast and PC versions.

    • @snetmotnosrorb3946
      @snetmotnosrorb3946 Před 6 lety +7

      I was tremendously disappointed over the GC version. I expected that after all these years and ports this version surely would be the best. I had already played the PC version, but it was only borrowed and it had some compatibility issues. I thought it maybe would be even better and have even more extras, especially considering the relatively high price. But no. What a freakin' rip-off.
      It's a real shame that the best versions are on obscure platforms. The DC is long dead, and good look getting the PC version to run smooth today, if you even can find it.

    • @yoman8027
      @yoman8027 Před 5 lety +4

      At least the GC version allows to skip in-game cutscenes and have all music. But to be honest, the Dreamcast's best feature is the VMU screen. That way you can know your life and ammo without accessing the inventory.

    • @AlphaladZXA
      @AlphaladZXA Před 5 lety +1

    • @yoman8027
      @yoman8027 Před 5 lety +1

      @@snetmotnosrorb3946 There's a mod that allows you to do it, but you need the Sourcenext Japanese version (or, you know, an ISO).
      The Dreamcast version is really obscure, specially considering that most DC emulators can't run it since it was developed in Windows CE.

  • @Limbitation
    @Limbitation Před 5 lety +19

    Uhm, excuse me, but what of the Dreamcast port? Both campaigns, plus the 'Extreme Battle' mini-game. Analogue controls made the characters stagger like they're drunk, but the d-pad still works fine & the memory card showed your health & ammo at all times. it was still a good version with a tiny difference or two to the Gamecube port.

    • @megahedgehog2039
      @megahedgehog2039 Před 3 lety +2

      I guess the Dreamcast version wasn't very impressive compared to the ports mentioned here

  • @sonic0424
    @sonic0424 Před 7 lety +7

    About the N64 RE2, careful observers will note that the same cutscene is used for the Ada/Claire encounter with Annette Birkin (the same voiceover, even if you aren't that character). That was one way they saved space. Also, I think that's the longest cutscene in the game and they may have edited it down a bit compared to the disc versions.
    Having played most ports of RE2, I'd say the GameCube version has more in common with the PSOne DualShock version and the Dreamcast version is very close to the PC release. And I don't know about other people, but my Dreamcast copy is missing the gruesome death animations from other versions and has Original/Arrange modes inverted. It's as if the Dreamcast version is based off a censored Japanese release.

    I do remember Tiger made another Resident Evil 2 game, which was a dot matrix handheld that is probably the only version of RE2 that has 2 PLAYER HEAD TO HEAD. It was basically linking two 99X units (which is what these handhelds were called) to try and clear a level faster than your friend. They also said there was exclusive content if you hooked it up to your computer... but I never did either when I owned it. Not to mention it was just the police station and sewers, with the only boss being the giant alligator.

    One thing about RE2 on the N64 I don’t see mentioned too often, is that the EX files not only flesh out the RE1 timeframe for new players, but one file even makes a reference to Billy, one of the protagonists for the then in-development for the N64 RE Zero, which would eventually be released for the Gamecube. So a neat little teaser for a future game

  • @PlayStationPaul
    @PlayStationPaul Před 7 lety +58

    Two factual errors in this
    1. The PSN version of RE2 allows you to take it on the go with a PSP or Vita, so the Tiger version isn't the only portable version as indicated.
    2. This version also allows you to switch discs without "leaving the couch".

    • @excalibur183
      @excalibur183 Před 7 lety +20

      ...that doesn't count. That's not a portable version, but a home console version re-released on the PSP.

    • @PlayStationPaul
      @PlayStationPaul Před 7 lety +10

      I'm not following you. It exists and is an option, it being a re-release is irrelevant. It's an official release and functions as a portable RE regardless of how it came to be.
      Surely the context should be "portable version" not "physical release port"? Limiting the discussion to the latter doesn't give the full picture for anyone actually wanting to play this game on the go.

    • @excalibur183
      @excalibur183 Před 7 lety +12

      I think the point of the video was more about highlighting versions of Resident Evil released originally for portable consoles.

    • @PlayStationPaul
      @PlayStationPaul Před 7 lety +11

      That still doesn't change the fact that the PSP version exists. I'm merely contesting what he said about the Tiger version being the only way to play RE2 "on the go". it isn't.
      But yes the PSP version wouldn't necessarily count as a "port, prototype or oddity" if that's what you mean. That's not the point I was making though.

    • @LordArikado
      @LordArikado Před 6 lety +20

      It doesn't count because the PSN version isn't a true portable version in any way, shape, or form. It's an ISO running in a PS1 emulator that the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita have built in. The Tiger version was rebuilt specifically for their console, which is why it counts as the only portable version.

    In my experience most randomizer runs are basically easy mode. Cause not only are the items random but the amount of ammo you get is random as well. I'll never forget getting 68 mag bullets in one pick up, right off the bat in the police station.
    Though I did have one run where I got almost exclusively red herbs. With very little ammo and only the few consistent green herbs that aren't randomized, it was actually a challenge. But seeing an item box overflowing with red herbs was worth it ha.

    Very informative and creative video, nice work. In regards to the GameBoy Advance port, I spoke with Massi Di Monda of Raylight studios briefly about the creation of the demo. He said on my RE2 GBA Video "we made this in 2 weeks. i had a meeting with capcom in uk, then they send the demo to capcom japan. the response was the gba was not suitable for mature games. so we stopped at this. :) there are some other small scenes which are not playable (we released other video)" I asked about the other footage and the original Resident Evil but I never heard anything back.

    A rock solid video as usual. I'm glad to see the RE2 GBA demo on here.
    If I could make a potential Punching Weight request: the games The New Addams Family Series and The Fish Files for the GBC. They're third person, almost point and click style adventure games, with some surprisingly detailed sprites at times. Also I believed they used some type of trickery to have more colors on screen then normally possible. Both games were made with some involvement from a company called 7th Sense, who appear to have made very little else.
    So yeah, ambitious, weird, obscure, seems like a good fit for the show!

Still, I'm still amazed by how they were able to get this game on an N64 cartridge at all and wish they did the same for RE3. I can only imagine Angel Studios remembered the hell it must have been getting that N64 port of RE2 to work as well as it did and made a blood vow never to do something like that again. XD

    What about the Tiger 99X version of RE2? It was a stand alone LCD game that ran on 3 AAA batteries and featured a link cable. It had a password/cheat system and the game was divided into stages; never got past stage 3 though. Pretty sure Leon was the only character you play as, but it did have the shared item chests. I never knew how the multiplayer worked on it, as I only had one, alongside the Crash Bandicoot 99X game.

    I don't know how true this is but the lore at the time was that Angel Studios had first approached Square about putting Final Fantasy VII on an N64 cartridge to prove it could be done but Square turned them down because after FF VII's marketing Square would have looked bad if some small American dev team could do what they couldn't. Supposedly porting RE2 was their second choice.

    Only graphically may the Dreamcast version and Gamecube version may be considered the same. Since the Gamecube version is based on the Dualshock release, and doesn't have any of the difficulty modes or additional content such as being able to view concept art, renders, models, and even FMV cutscenes. The N64 versions only virtue is the technical achievement it pulled off, outside of the randomizer and the button codes, it's inferior to the later ports in all but graphical quality which is roughly the same as the PS1 versions.

    RE2 on the GBA is mighty impressive. Surprised you didn't discuss RE 1.5 as it was technically a prototype for 2. But that's been done to death anyways.

    3:14 just based of the UI that looks more like a port of one of the Street Fighter EX games rather than Alpha 3

    probably not gonna happen but i suggest doing an episode on The Bouncer. It's honestly a pretty ambitious beat em up that probably could have been launched to a higher appreciation if it had the online capabilities of the ps3

    It was a curse and a blessing that Nintendo stuck with carts for the 64. We got some great games and technological marvels because of some smart coders.

    RE2 for n64 is a WEE bit bigger than a 64megabit cart, lol... The 64 bits refers to the CPU's buswidth, not the space on the cartridge.
