- Academy Award for best actress, award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, located in Beverly Hills, California. It honours the actress in a leading role who delivered the most outstanding performance in a movie of a given year, as determined by the academy’s voting members. The prize was first presented in 1929 at the inaugural Academy Awards ceremony, and it recognized work in films from 1927-28. It was not until 1935, at the seventh ceremony, that only performances in movies released the previous year were eligible for consideration. The winning actress is given a gold-plated statuette known as an Oscar.
Katharine Hepburn has won the most Academy Awards for best actress (four), and Frances McDormand has received three. A number of actresses have earned two awards, notably Meryl Streep, who holds the record for the most nominations in the category (17). This video of the winning actresses and the movies for which they won. The year is when the award was presented.

The Streisand/Hepburn tie is legendary. Hepburn wasn't there, but Streisand in her wildly successful film debut was - and gave an iconic acceptance speech. To omit this isn't only ignorance, it is just being lazy...demonstrating true incompetence .
There is a glaring omission. You have forgotten Barbra Streisand.
BARBRA STREISAND 1968 co winner
You’ve made the same mistake many of these postings make by getting the award presented in 1969 wrong. Why is it so hard to understand that a tie occurred that year between Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand? Barbra is so frequently left out and your sloppiness is to blame. What is your information source? The Academy’s website has it right. Wikipedia has it right. Why can’t you get it right?
So happy to see Emma Stone twice in this list! She's such an incredible actress!
Oh, she's going to be featured more than twice! I assure you! Book it, when all said and done she'll either match Hepburn's four wins or goes to break that record with five wins of her own! Like i said - book it!…When all said and done there is a high probability she will go down as Academy's most decorated oscar winner! (Not necessarily the greatest...but most decorated? Surely!)
And with highest win-loss ration between snatching nom and actually winning the whole thing! So far she went two for two! I think she may eventually start losing her noms at some point (extremely likely if you'd ask me!), but i still think she'll be remembered as someone who is winning more than losing!…
Wow Meryl Streep 3 oscars she’s the best !
You put the German flag for Luise Rainer whom you call « German born », why don’t you treat Claudette Colbert the same way : she was a French born actress ?
And Audrey Hepburn ?
God video 😊
Claudette Colbert is French.
Previous video on most famous actors awards mentioned Rita Moreno ( EGOT) as a Puerto Rican actress, in reality she began her career in the main land/ America . Puerto Rico is a US territory of America! Sometimes the info on these actors are incorrect! However congratulations to all !
I don't know why I was expecting to see Meryl Streep with more wins . . .
Yeah right...for all the hype talks about her being the most this, the most that...one would expect her to have at least four of those, but nope...surprise surprise...haha
I'm also shocked to find out many actresses, who you would naturally expect to have more than one having won only once! One such a great example is Cate Blanchett! But she isn't the only one! On the flip side i did not expect someone like Hilary Swank to have more than one...i knew her win for Eastwood directed Million Dollar Baby, cuz i remember the gigantic hype behind it during Swank's oscars campaign...but i was completely unaware of that other one from the year 2000...
Noticed Vivian Leigh died at 53 so I looked it up. Tuberculosis in 1967??
Yes, she was initially diagnosed with it in the 1940s and it became chronic with her until her death. Tina Turner also suffered from chronic TB until she found an physician who did. alternative annual treatment via IV vitamins and other stuff that cured it for good, and it took several years. It's still a deadly disease and has been for centuries. My own paternal grandmother, two of her children and her son in law, all died from the disease in 1906 in NYC. It's getting more and more resistant to antibiotics as well. In the mid 1960s there were still a few sanitariums for TB patients in the Western US.
Katherine Hepburn won 4 Oscar??? Is the record??
Yes it is.
Yes, in fact, an intergender one at that! No man or woman has more than 3 in leading actor/actress category!…
