I have a theory about this - and it starts with a tangent: namely, the HUGE backlash from Black Americans against Korean pop artists being so successful in the US. As long as kpop was considered a niche phenomenon in the West, people were largely cool with it, but today, with BTS, Blackpink, Twice, NCT etc dominating album charts and selling out stadiums in the US, there has been SO much hatred against them, accusing them of being "culture vultures" (which is ridiculous considering South Korea is basically occupied by the US military, it's like accusing Mexicans of "cultural appropriation" for speaking Spanish) and other such nonsense.
And as long as foreign/European ballplayers were seen as role players in the NBA, people were cool with that, too. But now, INARGUABLY, four of the five best players in the Association - Joker, Giannis, Embiid, and Luka - are not American.
And see, the reason those two things are related is that, due to centuries of oppression, Black Americans had few options to succeed besides music and sports. And for decades, they excelled in those fields, to the point of total domination. So, it is understandable that they think of them as "theirs": you look at the biggest music stars of the past 50 years, and you have Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney, Mariah, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Drake (Canadian, but you get the idea); you look at the best NBA players of all time, and again, the list is dominated by people like Mike, LeBron, Kareem, Magic, Shaq, Kobe etc.
So now, with foreigners - who looked up to those artists and athletes, and wanted to sing like Michael Jackson or Mariah Carey, or play like Mike and LeBron - not just catching up, but beating Black Americans at their own game, they feel, for better or worse, that something that is theirs - the very few things that actually ARE theirs - are being "taken away" from them. Add to that the typical American ignorance of anything that goes on outside of their country, and you get a mix of ignorance, resentment, and jealousy.
And there is another factor: another American illness is narcissistic entitlement. The rest of the world sees Americans as borderline sociopaths, and a lot of American society is structured to exacerbate that situation. So while European ballplayers play on actual teams where they learn from (and defer to) veterans, the American AAU system creates selfish, "go for mine" entitled wannabe superstars, to the detriment of their teams. And OF COURSE the NBA, and the owners of its teams, want to invest in people who put team success first. You will never hear about Domantas Sabonis waving guns around in a strip club, or Giannis refusing to get in shape, or Luka getting suspended for kicking people in the nuts.
The odd thing is that truly great Black American players are not the ones talking crap about foreign superstars. LeBron, KD, Steph, and former greats like Shaq or TMac - they constantly talk about how great Giannis is, or how Jokic plays the right way, or how Embiid is a beast. Look at who the hatred comes from - Gilbert Arenas, Kendrick Perkins, guys of that calibre. Because the thing is that LeBron does not fear competition: he would be great in any era, no matter against whom he would be playing. But in a league full of people like Luka and Giannis, Arenas and Perkins would be on the bench at best, in the G-League at worst.

Black Americans are territorial. There are many cases where we can accuse them of trying to steal our culture(or other people's culture.) However that is followed up by accusations of biggotry.

The meaning of being a basketball player differs in USA/Europe, especially the NBA. American approach is individual overall, being a star, scoring most points, being MVP, Allstar, best on the team etc since the very beginning in High School. European basketball is more team-oriented and playing for a specific team carries more weight, cause European fans take it serious, it's not just a logo and a jersey color and playing for whoever pays more. Winning a cup means everything and nothing else is really that important unless it's extra along the way. A big reason for this might also be the fact that coaches in Europe are more similar to Army instructors than athlete "partners" as they are in the NBA, so you get the picture why athletes don't really celebrate individual awards and goals like that unless it's after winning a cup... I think coaches like Pablo Laso would probably make somebody like James Harden or Jordan Poole cry like a girl or get kicked off the team.

It's interesting that fans used to discredit the 'value' of championships won by teams back in the 50s and 60s (especially Bill Russell and Wilt get shitted on) because it was a weak, mostly white league. Now there is a massive influx of international talent so I guess that means that all championships won in the 80s/90s and 00s are worth less now because it was a mostly American league. Basketball keeps growing worldwide so there's no reason to think this trend isn't going to continue. The NBA might end up looking more like the major European soccer-football leagues. This will mean that native-born players get pushed out as the overall talent level increases. The resentment will keep growing.

I think the NBA and sports analysts are worst than the players. NBA refs let players assault Luka and Jokic and they never call fouls. Luka got 3 techs in 3 games for just talking to other players. The NBA hates European players but they want them to come here for revenues. Even worst are Sports analysts who think like Perkins said, “The NBA is for Black men.” Luka Doncic is never in the top discussions for MVP no matter what he does.

I guess it's come to the point where the gaps in fundamentals are beginning to show, and the gap in physical "talent" is getting narrower... and there's a worry among the Basketball Americans that "this might be it"...
Much of the Basketball Americans' foothold in American basketball culture started in the 60s as it coincided with the "cultural revolution" in that era. It is difficult to accept that things might change after all these decades.
The thing about the European spirit (and primarily Classical Americana) is that they probably have the most explicit drive to "evolve" and "adapt" and "thrive"... all by themselves, without any aid from think tanks and super pac tier groups.
That is their advantage... and I think a lot of folks are getting irked by the fact that these Euros are beginning to use that to the hilt and start to get results from it.

I think US americans in general have issues with us Europeans and it is for different reasons.
    1. Many players of this current generation are angry because Foreigners in general expose their lack of professionalism and you can see the shift. Kobe and Dirk had nothing but respect for each other because of their professionalism, same with Tony Parker.
Then came the time of LeBron and just think back to the finals and the video he and Wade made about Dirk, they never would have done this to a fellow US american.
It exposes the US antics of flashy dunks, hand shakes and overly reaction to a made shot as what they are...antics!
Also many US players still think of europeans as soft which is wrong for the modern game, they just are more mild mannered and quiet.
    2. I think People of the US have a big problem with Europeans being the best basketball players right now. The fact that Luka & Jokic dominate the league really rubs some people the wrong way and while I hate to bring this into it I also do believe it has something to do with their skin color. Basketball is a sport mostly played by Black people and I hate to say it but multiple people form the US I know are appauled that white players are dominating right now, some outright calling it impossible which is just sad. In all fairness it was the same in Baseball and I believe the english would react similar to an afro american being the best cricket player on the planet, that doesn't make it less sad.
    3. The NBA and journalists hate Europeans because they expose the fraudulent league system.
Luka dominated because the way we develop talents is far more effective than the US college basketball system, yet the NCAA loves those dollars and TV ratings so exposing their system as the sham it is must hurt. Also Europeans will be much more willing to speak up against the league because we know how a league should function, just take Darko just now after their disgusting loss to the lakers.
    4. An actual example to prove my point are Franz Wagner & Paolo Banchero. Both have similar stats, they are the definition of Co-Stars on equal footing, if anything Franz does the slightest bit more more for the team as he takes on Guard duties at times yet the only I ever read is how Paolo Banchero is their franchiose players you can build a team around. It is nothing but unfair and I know Franz doesn't give a single damn about it but it is just incredibly disingenious.
I think the only people who like foreigners are franchises and their fans, because those people are far more loyal (Giannis, Joki, SGE, Doncic, Parker, Dirk, even Embiid and I tell you Wemby ain't gonna leave the Spurs too) and you can build a dynasty around them. Other than that only people who like great fundamentally sound basketball without all those antics like in the previous era prefer Europeans to my knowledge.

are you kidding? people weren’t even talking about giannis the last 2 years before he won for mvp discussion.

I think that players like Draymond are quintessentially American. it is about protecting the idea of American superiority. The winner of your championships are not presented as “world champion” (of what world?) for nothing.
The records broken by NBA players and the talks about the technical superiority of this generation (compare to the 90') seem far away, knowing that these Europeans are not even extraordinary by European standards.
Americans think they like Soccer, aka football, when their women win, even though women's soccer is negligible worldwide (but growing a little bit...).
It has absolutely nothing to do with basketball. Americans think they are the best in sports. And for several decades, they have had a shock. The myth collapses. they are just becoming average, even if they are still overall better in that sport of basketball.
