This year's Super Bowl was just played last night (2/11/2024). Not one of the commercials aired will ever be remembered and still give people "the feels" the way this brilliant ad did...and still does.
It's interesting that Mean Joe and the kid reunited years later. When they showed a countdown of the best Super Bowl commercials, the two were reminiscing about the time this was shot.
It was a different era....a time before the rise of the Nanny State. Seat-belts were for pussies. Kids rode around in the back of open pickup trucks. Bicycle helmets were virtually unknown. Kids played with metal lawn darts that could actually kill them. High schools had a "smoking lounge", for students. Doctors smoked cigarettes right INSIDE their offices. Toys were coated in lead paint. Parents didn't have to worry about being arrested for "child neglect", just because their parents let them play outside alone & unattended. Men used the Men's room & women used the lady's room, period. "Singers" didn't rely on "auto-tune", etc, & so on. TV stations "signed off" at around midnight-2am. It was a great time. People who didn't live in that era, don't really understand the true meaning of "Freedom & Liberty"
I had a spin welder! It was a toy welder! It used a heat gun to weld plastic and you could build a car with it. The welder plugged into the wall socket and it would burn you if mishandled. I think I was 8 when I got that. I am a child of the 70's and it was AWESOME! Summer vacations were time well spent. Tan with scabbed knees and elbows. Every house in the neighborhood had a mom home and she would give you a band-aid or kool-aid or both. Divorce went up 300 percent back then. I watched all the dads get kicked out. It was the start of what we have today.
