Hey all! I'm so happy. None of you probably care but I just bought an Orange CR120 and a Marshall 1960A
Christian Dinero Awesome!
Christian Dinero oh I am EXTREMELY happy for you!!
You been watching some Dave Simpson?
I care. I care very much.
***** thanks man!!
Even with gopro audio, this is probably the best sounding micro dark video on youtube right now. Wow. Love it. Thanks Rob!
Rob's house is cooler than my life.
Hank Hill goddamit hank you did it again!
I'm so used to seeing you I'm not even going to say "wow, you're everywhere!" anymore. I feel like if I made my username something memorable the same thing would happen to me.
Hank Hill how's the propane?
Hank Hill, he don't have no Propane BBQ though. Can we call him a real man without a God Damn BBQ?
I love the little micro amps. I have a 15 watt dark terror & its awesome!! Thanks for the lesson on the difference between input tone & return. Hope you have a great holiday!!
Rob I am so happy this video was made! I bought a Micro Dark as my only amp because it's what I could afford, and I am happy with it, but this opens so many more possibilities for sounds! Also happy Christmas from Saskatoon!
Merry Christmas Rob, you just reached 500k btw! That would be the best Christmas gift ever haha! Love you bro ;)
What already!?!? Wow, thanks so much guys!! ;-)
Rob Chapman can this be an "achievement unlocked" for the end of this year ??
500,000. But you deserve AT LEAST 10 billion ;P
In Burton We Trust
yeah, that works great with drive pedals, I put my BE-OD into the return of the micro dark and the result was very interesting to say the least. Thanks Rob for the video, happy Christmas!
Great video. Love the J.F.M. Looking good.
These Micro Orange amps are awesome, I love my MT20 with a pedal, more than I could ever want from an amp for 100 bucks... also congrats 500k!
Hey Chappers, I always find your content useful and amusing, so thanks.
This video gave me a great idea, so I busted out my A/B pedal I had put away and now I use it together with the parallel output of my tuner pedal to have one loop going into my amp input and another loop bypassing the input going straight into return...killer. I own a cheap hybrid amp head with some cheap pedals and manage to get some decent gainage as well as squeaky-cleans without selling a kidney to buy two amps. Cheers!
thanks so much rob I have been looking how to get an affordable valve amp for a while that can do everything(clean/dirty) thanks and congrats on 500,000 subs keep up the good work!!!!!
Great dude great fvckin play! big new year coming!
By the way....what an awesome flat!! Looks like someone is doing great on CZcams !! You deserv it bro !!
Weeeeeell, I know what I'm gonna be trying out with my micro dark this weekend.
500k! Congrats Rob and Merry Belated Christmas! 😊
I can get a sparkly clean tone with my Micro Dark through a Marshall 4x12 , yours seemed to be breaking up at the lowest possible gain, could be the boost or other pedals though. I’m referring to when you use the preamp. Going through the return of the Fx loop in any of my orange amps always yields nice results with the right Od-distortion , but the 12ax7 preamp is the star of the show for this little amp. I love your house and that little curling stairway, wish I saw more of those here in America.
Nice one Rob.
Great demo....those little lunch boxes clearly make great power amps.
That is one of the best sounds I have heard ya play.
Congratz on 500k, bro! may the subs keep coming!
happy 500,000 subscribers!
been a while since i visited your channel.. Merry Christmas
Congrats Rob you're the bomb man !!
I totally enjoyed your guitar playing!
500k Rob! Congrats
Just bought a Micro Dark. Definitely awesome!
Congratulations on 500 subscribers!! Here's to 1k next year ;DD
I was putting BIAS etc into the power amp of my Dark Terror using the same method, disable cab sim or any IRs and it sounds incredible
Really glad I came across this video. I've had a Marshall MG50 for years now, and have absolutely struggled to get a tone out of it I was happy with. It's really great clean, but any amount of gain into it just made it sound flabby. I've ran a couple different pedal boards into it, but I just couldn't get it.
Whacked an overdrive and a distortion into the return; immediately sounded tighter and more clear. Still a touch bass heavy, but an eq pedal in the front of the chain helped reel it in.
Yo Rob, I saw CS Guitars, make this an "all tube" amp buy using the input, then running the send into another amp which was attached to the cab. Apparently amps with solid state power sections can be run safely without a cabinet attached. I tried it with a Orange CR120 which is all solid state but gave it a tube power section on a Blackstar and it sounded awesome. Give it a try :)
Great demo! This may not be a solution for a live event but a great idea for home recording.
Actually, that might be easily doable with an A/B box.
Useful hack. I've been doing this with a Sansamp GT-2 and the Fx return of a Trace Elliot Tramp for many years.
Thanks for the tip Rob. I just tried it with my micro dark and tone city bad horse distortion pedal and it sounds great. I only wish I had an reverb pedal because your clean tone sounds amazing! I'll keep experimenting with it.
congratulations on 500000 subs dude
congratulations on 500,000 subs rob!
JUST SAW YOU HIT THE 500K SUBS MARK TOO, CONGRATS ON THAT, NOW ON TO A MILLION THEN 100 MILLION(DOES THE DR EVEL FINGER THING WHILE SAYING IT)
What's up with the palm tree hair
Manuel Vásquez Bed head - I don't really care about hair ha ha
Rob Chapman palm trees are cool man don't worry
It's the Christmas holiday. I've been in pajamas for 4 days straight and my hair looks like someone shot a Van De Graaff generator with a canon full of poodles. Rob looks absolutely presentable compared to the rest of us this week.
What can I say? I get a charge out of keeping up with current events. :)
dafretz so that's where I'm going wrong... I'm too out of date
thanks Chappers you saved me £200 and I'm glad I just impulse buy the micro terror with the cabinet in GuitarGuitar last week.
I dug out a small SS 30 tweed combo that has an effect loop at the back. I'm now going to get the Keely pedal I wanted 🎛
well from the first chord through the return I was in disbelief. You have managed to get such a strong and beautiful clean tone from such a small amp that it's just throw a cat amongst the pigeons for what amp I should buy to practice with.
Happy Boxing Day. And thanks for the hack.
nice playing & great demo as well ...........however if you tell me who done that haircut to ya, ill get em for ya :) Merry Christmas!!
I just got one of these micro darks, but I’m glad I watched this video before using it. I’m running everything through the return with 12” V30 & it makes this a much more versatile amp for me. I usually run a Vintera Strat or a Tele into a Boss SD1 to a Mooer GE200 & get all kinds of tone…….I also use this signal chain sometimes into a Marshall DSL20cr, but I think I like this a little better…..thanks for the hack!
Hi Rob and merry xmas
Love everything you do :) (messaged you on Facebook earlier)
I got a micro dark as my first head for Christmas so this was interesting, definitely going to try this when I'm recording cleans, also just an idea but if you weren't using delays and modulations etc. in the loop you could get an ABY and have one output into the front, one into the return, I don't know if it would work but then you would essentially have two channels...
Sick vid
Holy Hell,
That golden pedal through the return is flippin' amazing.
Blows the amps preamp out of the park!
Im blown away by this dude. I've been trying to think of something affordable to run my Hd500x into. I think this will work awesomely!!
I took this method and used it for the Headrush pedal board into my Micro Dark. Excellent hack, bro beans.
This is how I use my Micro Dark ever since you've shown us the return fx trick for getting clean sounds (Return loop + ED Spires fuzz). The preamp is nice, but it gets very "fizzy". Thanks for the tip!
That's a good way of getting a clean channel of an amp like this. Split the signal with a pedal that switches between outputs, one goes to the input and one goes to the power amp in/fx return, or a dual voiced amp by having something like a preamp pedal that has a different gain structure and tone than the amp and switch between...etc etc....possibilities are limitless, fun and full of TOONNEE
doesnt work, the input in the back overrides the front input, possibilities are minimal
7:25 So, you made a full solid-state rig sound godlike. I want a head version of that :O
Ha! I just got this head for Christmas!
Thanks once again, Rob. This is crazy, I order the orange dark 20 watt yesterday morning thru Amazon. It's going to be delivered by 10pm tomorrow. I look at some videos but l couldn't find much about the effect loop. I bought the dark orange instead of the regular one because of it having a effect loop and two more stages of distortion, plus it's supposed to have a better quality headphone jack. I wasn't sure how I was going to use it. I have an orange 1×12 laying around. I have around, well to many pedals laying around. Now I have a good ideal how I'm going to use this darkside deathstar beast. I have a really good klon copy and a decent delay/reverb. I'm going to send that thru the effect loop and have a crybaby in front. You think that should get me a nice classic to a little bit more metal sound. This is going to be interesting. I'll give an honest opinion on the matter in a few days after playing with it a little bit.
Thanks Rob. How the hell did you end up(no disrespect) a hot, hot wife like that. I hope you two have a long and healthy life.
CHEERS AND GREETINGS
Rob in Florida.
Happy 500k Rob!
500k* ?
shit lol
Thank you very much, Rob Chapman. I thought I was all set owning an Orange Crush having a good sounding gainy practice/travel to the girlfriend's and annoy her amp. But no, all of your Micro Dark vids have made me drool over this amp to the point I ordered one.
Ahhhhhh,Catalyst.Love it!
This is ingenius.
Happy holidays!
So you've got a solid state amp setup that sounds good. Interesting.
I should try that with my Vox-style pedal some day.
I have the same mythos mjolnir pedal! I didn't know anybody knew about them and I love mine. How are you using yours? I've been playing more clean music recently and have been using it to bump my mids up and for a clean boost!
Loved the tone at around the 9 minute mark.
Love the bananas on the guitar body , is the clean volume enough for gigging through the return?
I've been using a similar approach. When I transitioned to pedalboards, I had been using Mosvalve rackmount power amps for years, so I just sent my pedalboard right into those. Great, warm & dynamic power.
But I had always assumed i still needed some sort of amp front-end (preamp) always-on pedal in my chain, and I've used various sansamps and the Joyo American sound for that.
So is the amp front-end doing anything different that doesn't get accomplished by a dirt pedal, or can the average dirt pedal just function as a preamp like this?
I might need to play around with my chain, setting the Joyo as the clean-sound only, based on this video.
Thanks!
I think it's interesting to notice that the pedals are solid state, as well as the signal path of the micro dark from the return to the power amplifier (which is a solid state IC). I think this demonstrates very effectively that you can achieve very very nice tones with solid state gears, and tubes are not always a must! :-)
Anyway very nice Rob! \m/
Hey Rob - do you suppose you could use an A/B pedal to run through the preamp or through the return for a wider variety of tones? I'm curious about any noise issues that may present. Great stuff mate.
You can also do this by using the headphones jack into a return FX loop section and it works as a preamp filter for a combo amp.
I was the 500,000 subscriber!
'My hair is an eagle, your argument is invalid'.- Rob Chapman
For a second I was sure you were playing some Smashing Pumpkins clean intro song in the later clean test! This solidifies even more my decision to buy Golden Plexi ever since you guys demoed it at Anderton's. And approves my earlier decision to get ch-1.
I use this same trick with my Line 6 Pod HD500! Into the return of a Micro Dark and out to a Blackstar 2x12. Some of the best tones I've ever gotten with the budget I have to spend on guitar stuff.
Hey Rob. First of all happy Christmas and second of all I actually got an orange micro dark for Christmas with a 1x12 v30 loaded cabinet and yes by plugging into the fx return your tone gets a hole lot cleaner but this might just be my setup but on the neck pickup of my schecter omen 6 extreme (everything on the guitar is at 10) my tones stays pretty clean and around 10 o'clock on the gain knob is where I start to get some distortion.
Awesome as usual. Any pointers on a Vox mini 3. I'm hoping to get a killer blues tone
I've been doing this with the micro dark since I bought it... running bias AMP on the iPad through it ... sounds killer and plenty of volume in the power amp
new camera is awesome, video quality is as lush as dem tones
I plug my Boss GT-1 to the FX return of an old Hughes and Kettner combo so I only use the power amp section of the amp, and I run the COSM model amps without cab sim
that is a beautiful PRS in the corner.
I've been doing this for years with my sans amp vt pedal (yes I play bass) it's a great at a rehearsal studio or any place where your not running your own rig.
Plugging into an effects return is often preferable with 'preamp'-style pedals, and particularly for those of us that are prone to travel. A show on compact multifunction stompers with single, dual or dual plus rocker (two pedals and a paddle) would be most welcome. Maybe an overview of suitable compact full-range solid state amps like the sadly discontinued Crate Power Block would be similarly received. I'm a fan of amps you can toss in a gig bag, like the Smokey.
Arguably this is more applicable to those of us who have older solid state 100w combos. The pre-amps are pretty rubbish but they pump out a lot of sound. I will try this with my old Laney
i have a 4x12 and the micro terror can go clean on just great!
Is that the six string version of Rob Scallons signature? I really like that guitar!
I really love the headstock.
Happy New Year Rob!
I'm thinking about doing a similar thing with the micro dark, I'm going to run a victory kraken pre amp through it.
Would this be good or would the solid state power section let it down a lot?
The Rob Scallon guitar sounds so nice!
got the rs6 in early december. by far my favorite guitar ever
congrats for 500000 subs
Hey Rob, have you tried any of the Seymour Duncan pedals? Seeing Keith Merrow's videos on them have me really interested, but I was curious what you thought as well.
With things like the Palladium, this idea of going thru the loop would be even better.
For people with cheaper/small amps that don't have a send/return but do have an mp3 input much the same thing can be accomplished by plugging directly into that. It definitely helps when you are using your standard multieffects pedal.
Great! Do you think the setup would work the same/ better with an ehx .44 Magnum?
this very thing I do with my raven 100w head I run my tonelab processor straight into the return and it sounds just amazing!
I frequently use a multi-effects unit (POD 500HD or Boss GT100). Whilst the quality of some of the effects in such units is debatable, using the 4 cable method does give the benefits of using the amp return with more flexibility. The 4 cable method allows you to put some effects (drive etc) before the amp pre-amp, and insert delay reverb etc after the pre-amp before the power section of the amp. The pre-amp on the amp simply becomes an additional optional effect, that can be by-passed simply by switching off the Send/Return on the pedal unit. When it is switched off (by assignable foot switch) the whole pedal chain goes straight into the return. You can add an emulated amp in the multi-effects or just take your guitar/pedal tone straight to the amp return. You can also use the volume pedal on the board in conjunction with the send/return levels to control volume, and the amount by which you push the pre-amp valves when they are in the loop. The overall output level on the pedal board can even be used to push the output valves directly, with or without pushing the front end.
Wow.... I need to try this on my zoom 3gx and Fender frontman 100.... I am not saying that one can sound better than the other one, just curious...
Hi Rob, I have a guitarristic question, How do you aovid the hum and the noise? I'd like to know if you could make (or do you have) a video talking about different tips and things to prevent that. Keep going :D
Hey Rob, I always use the return on my Amp when I use my iRig Stomp pedal and iPad with Amplitube, its the best way to use your Cab Sims and Effects. Cheers!!
I have used the old "I bought it for my partner" excuse a few times... good work !!!
Would it be possible to use a loop switcher to bypass the preamp stage yet have it accessible from a switch? I imagine it is but how one go about doing this and still allow for delays and choruses to be in us?
You've essentially bypassed the preamp gain stage/tone stack and you are using the the power amp stage of the amplifier. Your tone is coming from the pedals in this instance. I wonder if this would work if you lost a preamp tube during a gig?
Hey, I own one of these amps and would like to try this effects loop trick with a bass guitar and a bass speaker. Do you think it would give a good sound and enough volume to keep up with a drummer?
Merry Christmas mate!
Instead of throwing that Ghost Fret in the corner....
How about throwing it my way? LOL
Hi Rob. You should do a Micro Dark vs the RD1. It would be nice😉 Marry Christmas
wouldnt it be a nice video demo?🤔
