How Damaging Were Those Texts? - NY v. Jonathan Majors | Trial Day 5 Recap

  • On December 4, 2023, NY v. Jonathan Majors kicked off with opening statements and its first witness testimony. This is the recap of Day 5 of this trial, which includes testimony from Grace Jabbari, the ex-girlfriend and alleged victim in this case, as well as Holly Blakey and Officer Brendan Swayne.
    FOR CONTEXT:
New York prosecutors allege that on March 24, 2023, actor Jonathan Majors physically assaulted his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari in the back seat of a hired driver's car before throwing her back into the car after she tried to get out. Jabbari says that as a result of this altercation, she suffered a fractured right middle finger, a cut to her right ear, and bruising to her head. Majors, on the other hand, disputes the characterization of the altercation: he says she attacked him, and that he suffered scratches on his face and body as a result, and that he threw her into the car so he could get away from her before she tried chasing him down on the streets of New York.

Jabbari already testified that he wasn't abusive to her prior to March 24, 2023, and those texts are massively redacted thus there is no bearing on the current incident that he's actually being tried for and the 2022 texts couldn't be referencing abuse. If they wanted to prove he was abusive then, they should have asked her outright if that was the case to establish a pattern and they did not.

It is still going to be really hard for the prosecution to overcome the fact that Jabbari went on an all out bender, which included alcohol, drugs, and pills, and prove to the jury that Jabbari's injuries were directly caused by the altercation with Majors. Even if they make that finding, how is the prosecution going to get over the "mutual combat" defense? If I was in the jury, it would be a not guilty.

As of currently of March 22 there is nothing that has been proven by prosecution that implicates Jonathan Majors of the actual alleged crime. The problem here is assumption of something occurring on Sept 22 does not make it so of the Mr. Majors having committed a crime on March 22nd. And then after the cab driver testified Jonathan Majors is innocent and she is the guilty person.

The thoughts and feelings on their own are not emotional manipulation, they are your genuine intense emotions, but is sharing that specifically to your partner who you are fighting with, is that wrong? Should you purposely not tell them and seek help from anyone else to avoid the real problem of causing your partner harm as well and guilt and all the feelings and fears that come with hearing that from your partner? Not really sure what’s right and I know each situation is different but I need to know what’s the best way to handle self harm thoughts in a situation where you are fighting with your partner.

To these people defending her, it's abusive for him to be depressed and express low self-esteem/confess to suicidal ideations when the other partner is causing those feelings of worthlessness to surface. Men with mental health should not be emotionally honest with partners or have expectations for their alcoholic partner's conduct because that's "abusive". But also seeking help outside of the relationship is "abusive" and "shameful" because he didn't "open up" to her. But actually her attempting suicide by pills and texting him exactly that to make him come home to her half-naked body is acceptable and not abusive, because he's a man and must've deserved it or did something to cause it. And her pretending to be unconscious while listening to him for 40 minutes trying to get into the room to save her life is acceptable. There not being any actual evidence of overdose present when the cops come in and no attempt made to administer counter medications, meaning she lied about the suicide attempt? Acceptable. Her allegedly facetiously playing an audio clip of ANDY'S COMING from Toy Story to reference a pretense of being Inanimate in the presence of JM? Acceptable.
To these people defending her, they were the ones arguing that Johnny Depp being drunk or drugged was pure evidence he was abusive even absent any documented injuries simply because "drugs" and he's a man. But here, Jabbari being a constant and consistent alcoholic is perfectly okay and Majors deserves it and can't call her out or set boundaries on her alcoholic behavior because she's a woman.

Did you make this video before the evidence was allowed to be released to the public? Or after? Because now that we have more context it really just sounds like Majors is tired of his ex-girlfriend. There's nothing damning about those texts. Even the recording about him wanting her to be supportive of him like Coretta or Michelle was just him setting a boundary and him pleading with her to be good to him. He honestly just sounds exhausted and I feel sorry for him. :(
He was going through this, and now even after trying to get her help he's now being punished for nothing.

That seems unlikely, given the "I'm a monster" follow up. It's possible the texts aren't in relation to intentional abuse, but providing drugs that lead to an injury seems a far more passive act than texts like these would imply.

He was the one to say that he was attacked on that sept 22 incident. The fact that the judge was not allowing the audio seems so fishy.
Under NY law on self defense, the moment she testified to starting the fight and hitting him to.submit him into releasing his phone to her, that ended it.
She is the accuser and she herlself said that she attacked him and he reacted to get her off of him and get his property back.
Can you imagine if he had attacked her to get her.phone out of jealousy and chased her down for 6 blocks to get it?
Defence did well in exposing her lies and showing her manipulative side. It costs him his image.
And him putting her in the car he clearly had no choice in lifting her first, this is a cadillac escalade. It's high. I'm.much taller than her and I have to climb. she would have had to climb while likely already intoxicated. He was likely concerned about her safety. Which the 911 call shows.
And why was she faking being passed out naked in the closet??? Manipulation.
All in all, rewatch how she twists Chloe's arm to go and confront him when she sees him again. Ask any specialist. She has the body language of someone violent while he seems to show the avoidance of someone scared and traumatized. An abuser does not run from his victim who also does not chase after them.

It's difficult to know for sure, but the way he wants her to conform, the way he wants her to protect him at all costs, the way he wants her isolated, and the sound of those texts is really not looking right.
Although, it DOES make sense for him to worry a lot about his image being a star on the rise and working for disney, especially after seeing what happened to Johnny Depp.
It also makes sense that he would want her to stay home if she was a party girl. For one thing it doesn't reflect well on him as a man that his girl is dancing in clubs letting random dudes rub all over her. It doesn't look good for him if she getting drunk and acting the fool, as drunk people almost always do. This could also explain him wanting her to conform.

No matter if he desperately felt like his life would be over and that he would have urges to unalive himself, he communicated that to her conditionally related to her seeing a sexual text from another woman and saying “I need love to.” Sounds like kind of gaslighting her into believing that his behavior is reasonable. It feels like him side stepping potential infidelity by playing the victim about how hard this is for him. Disgusting. These text messages have me leaning strongly to him most likely abusing her and being the cause of her injuries. He would have no worries about her seeking medical care if he truly thought she fell and it had nothing to do with him. In fact a living concerned partner should encourage her to seek medical care. To me, those texts seem like he is scared of what she is going to say & that she may lie about the situation so he’s cautioning her against it out of fear. Majors could not want her to talk to the police about it even if she caused her own injuries out of protection for both he & her. As a public figure, I can see how he wouldn’t want any information about his toxic relationship being leaked to the press or a police investigation unfolding even if Jabari was the aggressor. They obviously wouldn’t be able to stay in this toxic relationship if police get involved. There’s not enough context to know what is actually going on in this particular incident. This seems like a very toxic relationship for both individuals but I can’t see how Majors is found guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Jabari seems like the aggressor in that March 2023 footage.

  • @Crypt0n1an
    @Crypt0n1an Před 4 měsíci +3

You're obviously siding with the defence in this trial. You try to make it out that those texts aren't damning but you fail to properly address the three major points, 1) Majors' obvious attempt to dissuade Grace from going to the hospital for her injuries/pain 2) Jabbari's willingness to cover up the true cause of her injuries as a way to provide assurance to Major's insecurities/fears about her seeing a doctor 3) Major's failure to address point (2) which had the insinuation not been true any logical person would have pushed back on it.
Those texts are the death nail for the defence, they shot themselves in the foot with it because even if Majors isn't guilty of what he is being accused of on the night in question and this is perfectly evident to the jury they will still find him guilty because of what he obviously did on a different incident.

Big big big wins for prosecution. I hated hearing those texts. It makes me feels concerned about the ways that her behavior was potentially modified through pressure, manipulative, and forceful ways and that he almost put his own emotional and physical needs before her and gaslighted her into him being a victim. He told her to “protect us” and not seek medical care and in this discussion brought up his own urges to unalive himself which seems to possibly either be intended to or have the consequence of dissuading her for attending to her own needs. Awful. I’m definitely leaning healing towards him abusing her.

It's a big swing and a miss for the prosecution actually. Hearing those texts did nothing for me. They're from an unrelated incident, and with the evidence from this case we're following, they have no bearings - all it shows is that Grace was a calculating, deceitful and unloving partner, who was not able to see the big picture. I am definitely leaning towards her manipulating him and being an opportunistic liar.

Texts without context mean nothing. That's like taking rap lyrics and using it in trial. I need to read ALL not just the part the prosecution wants me to read to evoke emotion. You seem easily duped if you fell for that

What evidence is there that he abused her? The out of context text messages may suggest it, but she testified on the stand that he didn’t hit her on that occasion. Then there’s video evidence that she was chasing him after he supposedly injured her finger. Then video of her in a club with no visible injuries after the alleged incident. Then you have the driver testifying that she was the one abusing him and that Major’s never touched her. All this evidence that directly contradicts her and you still somehow think Major’s is guilty.

@@sirflappington2484 people keep saying the messages where out of context but it is a large reach to say it could be about anything else other her getting injured by him. But there is literally no other reason he would say “even if you do lie.” They do have reports of him throwing things. He said himself, he has a “temper”. Just because Jabari hit him first that night doesn’t mean he has never hit her first before. The text messages reak of abusive behavior.

@@FreelyCherie just because we can’t think of another reason he would say that, doesn’t mean there isn’t another reason. In addition, reak of abusive behavior is not evidence, that’s a subjective feeling. Innocent until proven guilty is the gold standard and the witness that say they saw no injuries on her, and the driver that testified that she was the aggressor is much stronger evidence than the text no matter what feeling the texts gave you. Let’s assume he did cause her injury, what if she was attacking him and he pushed her away causing her to fall? It’s a good reason to be afraid of persecution but would you consider that abuse? No, it’s self defense. No other reason is just no other reason that you can think of, there can be many reasons to say that that doesn’t include abuse. In addition, jabbari herself testified he never hit her before and the incident she accused him of, the one in the car, is the only one. Therefore the messages that refer to a supposed prior incident is not up for debate since she herself said, under oath, that nothing happened.

@@sirflappington2484 I hear you. But I still feel the wording seems off. People have a right to still look at him sideways because of it. I do think that night he was innocent. But he himself said he had a “temper”, she testified that he would throw things. Those are typical signs of abuse. We never said we know for sure. The commenter said “can’t say for sure.” I’m just saying people have enough evidence to believe he might have been hitting her before this. I do believe in the actual case he is innocent.

@@FreelyCherie It’s definitely right to suspect him, it’s only logical. Even though I assume innocence, I always keep in mind the possibility he’s guilty. The problem I have is only with people that assume guilt without knowing the full story.
Edit: The original commenter said they believe him to be an abuser and that’s not just looking at him sideways. That’s assumption of guilt. Believing means having a reasonable amount of certainty and I just don’t think there’s enough evidence to believe he’s an abuser and assume he’s guilty. I think it’s perfectly fine to suspect no matter how little evidence, but not believe, belief should be limited to things that are at least likely.
