  • The Ford Mustang is a fantastic sports car and is arguably one of the best sports car regarding the bang for your buck. The 4.6L SN95 is a very reliable car, however, with all reliable cars, they have issues as well. All of the Ford Mustang GTs issues are very manageable and not going to leave you stranded, but there are some notable issues to bring up.
Not all mustangs will experience the same issues, but these are just the most common issues.

When I got my mustang two years ago :
I had issues everywhere! It was $1,800. I knew what I was getting myself into but I would consider it my project car back then. I’d already own a Toyota, still do. They’re both my babies. Anyways, it had issues with the differential fluid spilling out, a lot... that was my first fix. Then I had issues with the brakes being old, easily fixable, but they failed to mention that the brake fluid was running low, so I had to get it towed to a mechanic to fix that. Back axle was at the verge of giving out so he had to fix that too, out of my range. We had to change a wheel bearing. I had rewired my car’s electrical lights since the previous owner did them incorrectly, that was the easiest for me to fix but also extremely time consuming. I had changed from lightbulbs to LEDs, so I had to wire the LED headlights as well. I also did the paint job on my car. It was easy as well but very time consuming. Then the interior, I needed to change the back speakers to newer and better ones so they would work and sound badass B-) Then I changed the radio since I wanted it to look slick. I added a CD holder on my dashboard and some cute figurines. This mustang hasn’t failed me since. It’s been up and alive since I fixed the major issues. They are absolutely reliable as long as you keep them well maintained, up to date, and give lots of loving to them too.

You are a prime example of someone who isn’t afraid to revive a car that wasn’t taken care of. I love that. Something more people need to do.
You are able to buy the car cheap and customize it the way you want to. Perfect.
Like you said, if you take care of them, they will last a very long time.
Glad you are safe with that brake issue!

@@AutoMotivate well thank you! I’ve had people behind my ear tell me what a waste of money it was but I think it’s worth it once you set your mind, labor, and time into it. After all I made my own money and with passion for that car, it was worth it at the end as the car has and will last as long as it is taken good care of it. Not to mention how much I love it. So thank you for that positive feedback!

As a 2000 GT owner I can more then verify the intake manifold and actuator problems. The intake had a PLASTIC housing for the thermostat and of course leaked severely which caused me to buy another one with a METAL housing.
The door actuators actually went out about 85k which lasted much longer then I expected. But after having them replaced the Passenger side one broke again.

I think these issues would be true with any car if you don't take care of them. I've owned 5 SN 95 Cobras, including the two Mystic Cobras that I currently own, and two Fox Bodies and I've never had these issues. The paint issue is from someone not washing and waxing it on a regular basis. The only consistent issue was on my Mystics, for some reason, both speedo gears broke at the same time. Those are $10 dollar parts, no big deal. I know this is directed at GTs, but the bodies are the same. I have no experience with the 4.6 Gt motor, but the 32 valve is awesome.

#13 Replace the 3:25 ring and pinion with 3:73 gears, 5th gear isn't really usable until you are going 75 mph +. the 3:73 ratio is much easier on the clutch and makes 5th gear so much better(plus neck snapping performance). You will have to reprogram the computer for the gear ratio change. Hope this helps. :) 2002 GT

The 96-98 cobras are phenomenal cars! They really engineered those cars very well. But like all cars there are common things that can go wrong. One of the most common flaws of the 96-98 cobras are intake manifold runner control (imrc) failures, they tend to get stuck after about 100k miles, you can either have them cleaned or replaced with imrc delete plates, but if you delete them you have to get the car tuned! Another problem was they had a small over heating issue but it’s really not that big of a deal, the temperature just sits a bit higher than the 97-98 cobras since they fixed that issue on those years…other than that I’ve beat the crap out of my 96 cobra for two years straight racing everyone and the only thing that ever went wrong was my transmission from power shifting, and one of my ground cables came loose causing my radiator fan not to work and overheated my engine, but these cars are solid!!!

Dont know what happened but does not sound good

I bought my 02 SN95 for $2800. Basically all stock and the paint was faded all over.
The 2vs are insanely reliable if they haven’t been beaten their entire life.
They are easy to work on and there is a large amount of aftermarket performance modifications out there.
A downfall for these cars is the boat feeling they have.
Install a bit stiffer lowering springs(I did a 2 inch drop), new struts, new quad shocks, install chassis brace, front and rear sway bars, and I would even replace the bushing on all the main parts like the control arms and the engine/trans mounts.
With some CZcams videos, you’ll be able to do it all 🙌 be sure to grab yourself a torque wrench and apply the correct torque specs and use jack stands!

They also were incredibly reliable great A/C automatic transmission everything. That being said that 04 car is the only one that can even come close.( Of course the two years of the terminators are exempt). The 95 Mustang Gt I have right now is far superior. Yes I’ve owned and modified at least 20 mustangs from 67 to my latest 2013. All these little things your talking about are irrelevant in the Mustang community. We modify and drive the shit out if these cars. No one thinks about if the door window motors and clear coat peeling. 😂

I’m apart of a mustang community and they do talk about all the issues I mentioned. There is nothing wrong with being educated about potential issues that may arise with your car
