    Definitely a challenge to film, edit and post this one the same day, but the extra hard work was totally worth it! We spent the day hanging out with our Patron Nevil near London, who took us for a spin on his 61' narrowboat / home

      J B Have you got any idea how much a residential mooring in London costs? You're looking at a minimum of £8,000 a year IF you can find one, which is highly unlikely. In addition to this, you need your CRT licence at around £1,000 a year, council tax (yes it's still payable on a residential mooring) that's another £1000. You're looking at over £10,000 a year absolute minimum. Many people buy a boat without a mooring, and abuse the continuous cruising licence by staying on one small stretch of canal. They risk having their licence revoked and ultimately having their boat impounded. They also clog up the canals so genuine visiting boaters cannot moor. Promoting living on a boat in London as a cheap alternative is completely irresponsible.

    I've been on a couple of canal boats for a bit and electric would be cool. Though in the ones I have been in the engine was beneath the area you would stand with the tiller and I would miss being able to take off ones footware and feel the warmth of the engine radiating through the deck when it was cloudy and a bit chilly. Such a pleasant feeling.
    And those low bridges being as easy to reach as they are were always a challenge for my friends, can you climb up and over the bridge and back down the other side before the boat has finished passing under. We were never in London or really in the middle of any city when we'd do that though. Probably something that would be frowned upon and they were often quite dirty but was a lot of fun when younger.

    When travelling Europe a couple of years ago, we rented a converted oil barge in Roterdam harbour via a VRBO/AirBNB type site. Much wider than the canal barge here, nice gardens on the roof and deck areas. Wood stove to keep the chill off, soft close drawers and cupboards. Fabulous.
    In the evening look out the porthole and see the harbour wall, wake up in the morning and you are at street level.
    I'd do it again in a heart beat.

    Great video. Neville was so generous to share his home.
    So, imagine an electric solar setup with a servo motor at each end for extra maneuverability (easy 180s wherever there's adequate width). Then add a wireless controller (like those consoles for construction vehicles) so you could operate the boat from bow, stern, or even land.
    Perhaps a ducted jet setup would be better than props to not have to worry about the weeds.

    I live in the North of England and I'm surrounded by these canals. They were the superhighway of the industrial revolution. I looked at canal boats but then ultimately bought a yacht. Sadly that was lost when the 'Beast from the East' destroyed my marina and sank 80 other boats. Having come full circle I'm now looking at a canal boat as a live-aboard. The canals are close to work and if my job ever changes there are canals in all the main centre's nearby... Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Chester etc.

    Fantastic video - as always.
    Well - I want to make some general comments:
    - These very old narrow canals are typical for mid- England and only there. As far as I know even some canals of that age in France are wider.
    - The boat size is standard from that ancient times. There was a little room at the end were now the machine resides - there the family lived. They loaded mass products like cotton or coal and pulled the boats all the way.
    - There was a German journalist from mayor TV station, that owned such a boat. Theirs was rusty - she had a new one built! Yes, these are still built.
    - as far as I heard, more north of London you may even rent some for holidays. But most common there are plastic boats for holiday rent.
    - in other countries house boats are also common - especially Netherlands. But there these are usually modified old river boats - much larger.
    - Also the Dutch are famous: building new house boats as a complete village! But these reside on water all time in one place - nothing on to move it.
    Weather: You just enjoy the rest of Europe's hottest summer ever. In other years you would already were socks, pullover and rain jacket.

    This is an incredible video and a great source of information on narrow boat living from the perspective of a normal middle class person. I follow a few CZcamsrs that own narrow boats and I have been able to compare expenses for people who have the luck to follow this lifestyle. Since I live in South Florida where we have hundreds of miles of canals and one of the highest rent costs in the US, I am fascinated with the idea that narrow boats could present a great alternative living, specially in Miami. Since canals in South Florida are much wider than in England, narrow boats could resemble those in France where they are called river barges and have a width of about 12 feet. Most of the canals in Miami are interconnected and the main one is about 77 miles long. Many of them run throughout the city of Miami even in downtown. By the way, I understand that electric motors in narrow boats are a no no since owners love the chug chug sound of the diesel engine while cruising at 3 knots.

    • @tgcrowson
      @tgcrowson Před 4 lety +1

      Home Studio Adventures For Dummies There are a couple of purely electric narrow boats on UK canals now although hybrids are starting to appear. The problem with electric is the weight of the boat. I have a 55’ narrowboat and it displaces 12 tons unloaded. It takes quite a bit of power to move it at 3mph. I have a 38hp Beta Marine diesel that moves it at 3mph at a constant 1500 revs. Where the canal is very shallow and narrow my speed will drop to 1 - 2 mph. An electric motor would soon use up the battery storage and it’s not that sunny in the UK. In December daytime is 9am - 4pm so often solar wont keep a 240v fridge running!

    Back in the 70s I had a friend who lived on a narrowboat in Paddington. During the late 70s and the mid 80s I had a couple of narrowboat holidays pottering around the Mid-lands for 2 weeks at a time. The area round Birmingham is one of the most interesting for urban history. There are about as many miles of canal in the city as there are in the rest of England! Going slow lets you see the scenery go past, and there are lots of pubs along canals!

  • @TheEulerID
    @TheEulerID Před 3 lety +1

    To fully explore the connected English (and part of Wales) canal and waterway systems takes years. There are some excellent channels. Cruising the Cut is probably the most professionally presented for the very good reason that the owner of the boat in question was a professional TV journalist and presenters. However, if you want to see a couple on a mission to explore the entire navigable system, the look at the Minimal List channel, where Michael and Jo having been doing exactly that for three years. I think Michael is Canadian (although he used to work in LA) whilst Jo is English, although they both met whilst travelling the world. It's a charming channel.
    Oddly as it might seem, whilst the canals have lost their original economic purpose, the network is gradually being expanded as old, abandoned canals are being expanded as part of the leisure and lifestyle industry. It's really quite a remarkable phenomenon, and it time it might be possible to again reach the South Coast of England if/when the Wey and Arun canal is restored.
    Scotland's canals and waterways are not interconnected in the same way.

    I love this vid, nice energy ! I am thinking hard about living on a boat or a yacht. Oceans scare the shit out of me though (even though I love swimming in them) so maybe for riverways with a yacht and a barge for the slow life on canals. My only concern with a barge is steel and water, ie rust Fiberglass seems such a great material. I have also been a little bit seduced by classic wooden yacht's. Any thoughts appreciated

    Thank you for interviewing this wonderful person's beautiful music studio home!
    I've been trying to find more non-white and diasporic brown ppl in these alternative mobile living home/lifestyle channels and it's so hard!

      Why would that be significant? Just people living on boats, so weird how some people virtue signal about skin tones. I am sure your intention is pure but in trying to be so "non racist" you actually are being.

      There is an African model, Poppy Otoka (?) who has lived on a beautiful narrowboat for years with her (white) bf who is a well known architect. But I dont think they've ever done a video. Just photos.

    Ahh you missed a great British reference! It's like the Tartis (Dr Who) it's bigger on the inside! What a cool guy and a sweet canal boat.

    Thank you so much for showing the narrow boat. It caused me to get informed. Didn’t realize how extensive the network of canals is. Prices from 14 to 100k £. Cost as little as 3500£ per year all in. Great info thanks
