A missed opportunity for a that's what she said joke. The smirk was sufficient I guess.
I was curious so I looked up the ingredients of the rust remover and the main active ingredient is.... OXALIC ACID, just as I expected. It's the main active ingredient in bar keepers friend and it's absolutely magic
For a moment I thought Uma is pregnant . đŽ
Hey you might have a 3m rep in your area 3m are really good for small sizes if you reach out to them. they can't offer certain things so widely as 95% of customers are in a narrow size range, but me and my big head got a mask from them during covid and I bet they might be keen to for you to advertise their size support.
Love you kids! Take care of yourselves. â¤
So that's how you are funding the refit!
Good balsa work! I really think a matrix of foam cored ribs would add a very significant degree of strength to the cabin top. Also the loss of the raised hatch frames has removed an element of the strength. Once you know where the hatches and deck fittings go you can choose locations for the ribs. Too much flexing will in time result in crazing of the gelocat and weakened fibres. With the hugely strengthened hull, a reinforced deck structure will avoid issues with the hull to deck joint.
A/C does the trick everytime
The boat is super strong now. I think you should just call in the crain and flip the whole thing over to fiberglass the ceiling. Make it a lot easier for you. đ
When glassing over foam, put a thin layer of slurry over the foam, it will layup better and have no air bubbles in it. Slurry is epoxy resin with some micro balloons in it mixed to consistency of honey. Mix the slurry squeegee it on, add cloth, clear resin, squeegee all excess off. Done. I built a fiberglass homebuilt aircraft, this is how most surfaces are built.
Hi Guys! I think I've seen the question already, but what are your thoughts on insulation on the cabin ceiling? Greetings from a cold, wet UK!
What's going on inside this boat is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!
Like the comment below, I think you need more shade over the boat. Maybe a beige CANVAS tarp the extends over the entire boat. Perhaps the company Shelter Logic and provide you with a custom solution to your lack of shade. ShelterLogic is very well know company and I truly believe when the project is completed, you should be able to sell the ShelterLogic cover to another boat owner on (spoken with a Heavy Boston accent) the hard, in the yard, from Harvard in a car. đđđ𤣠Alan from NC

Once you guys get started glassing on the overhead, SOMEONE will be very happy about the difference in height between them and Dan.
Are they available in Italy?
@@SailingUma I don't think so. Based on their CZcams channel they're in a long-term committed relationship. đĽ°
I'm surprised you guys went with a home AC unit instead of the caravan/ motorhome type and mounted it in the roof.
It's all about whats available. Also we can resell it quite easily when we're done. and good luck finding a 20,000 BTU RV AC unit for $500. ;)
Yeah, I had a feeling after I posted that was it. Our unit cost âŹ1000, but it stayed fitted after launch.
Yeah could see your mask is way too big. I love my 3m fullface. I use it for everything. Even grinding metal. When its fitting right i just slip it on and off without adjustment. Also your eyes are part of your brain so you absorb solvents through your eyes.
Get a washable filter cut to size drape it over the top.
good to see your quick response air con crew were up to the job .. watching the lengths you folk are going to to achieve your dream accomodation for hopefully the foreseeable adventures . With technology moving ahead at alarming speed . I have every confidence in your ability to choose and install quality equipment and products incorporated into UMA,S refit ./ renovate .
Sanitising wipes have detergents in them, they remove the protective oil in your skin and sometimes cause contact dermatitis, try wiping the mask out with plain water instead,
I believe that you will need some kind of shade for a boat. Now you made inside cold, but outside is still exposed to the sun. And the surface will be very hot.
what about putting a big tarp over it so it reflects the sun, then a draft will help too? Aircon takes so much energy and since itâs not insulated would not be very effective energy wise.
I am wondering why you chose vinylester resin. Is it to avoid amine blush? Is it cheaper? I am just curios because with epoxy resin you can select a catalyst that suits the conditions. Not the cheapest but AC units arenât free. AC though. Thatâll be nice.
Vinylester is: 1. Way cheaper! 2. Plenty strong enough for an overbuilt cruising boat like ours 3. Available locally! 4. Easier and quicker to work with Among just a few reasons.
this might be a dumb question, but, if it gets too hot to work during the day, why not do more work at night/during evening?
Watching and you are not a fiberglass guy...lots of woopsieeeeeeeeeeees.
The only difference between us and a âfibreglass guyâ is the misconception that the fibreglass guy doesnât make mistakes đ we donât gain anything by pretending everything we do is perfect.
@@SailingUma Little help for you...put a drop cloth or a sheet of plastic under your balsa on the floor to catch some drips of resin. Injecting the resin like you are doing will fill the air pockets, but the resin you put in is going to crack like a potato chip later. Use a throw-a-way paint brush to paint the resin on to the balsa, then apply your fiberglass. Use the paint brush again to apply more resin on the fiberglass and then use the roller to smooth it all out. Your roller should be 3 or 4 inches long (plastic or metal) and have ribs on it...sorta like threads on a bolt. The least amount of resin you use, the stronger the bond to a point of not using enough resin...which is why you had all the air bubbles. Use a little more resin and when you roll it out, some of the resin will squeeze out and drop to the plastic you put down. Also if the resin is starting to kick off...dont use it...toss it out and mix up some more with a little less hardener to delay the kick off or flash. And the heat inside is not going to be your friend as it will help the resin to kick off. The air conditioner will help a little but the heat transfer from the sun outside on the hull or deck will help to kick off the resin. The main thing is to use slightly more resin, then apply the glass...paint on more resin and have the correct roller...not a cotton paint roller. If you are using roving-woven fiberglass mat, it will need a lot more resin to get it soaked, but it is also pretty thick but very strong. I do enjoy your videos and will help you any way I can. If you get resin dust into the pors of your skin...take a shower in water as hot as you can stay to open the pors to get it out, and dish washing soap like Dawn really helps. Have a good day.
It's not about presaturating.... It's about the time of day and the airpressure. You will never fully saturate the balsa, so once the resin kicks off and the outside temp gets warmer middle of the day the air inside the balsa expands and pushes out. Just do the lamination after 5/6 o'clock, when it starts cooling down
Mask "fit testing" is a thing. My SO worked in occupational health, they'd go through several sizes and brands of respirator with an individual, and test the face seal with doohickey that can detect a bittering agent sprayed around the mask. It's definitely worth getting right.
Yeah! Full-face masks! Definitely use them with the hooded Tyvek suits. And yes, it appears to be one size too large for you.
You should pre wet the fiberglass sheets before putting on, get less air bubbles
I think that itâs impressive the pure amount of work that is going into this boat and the love you have for it. But my question is this. Why?
So we can have the boat of our dreams without going into debt for it.
Nice work using the mini split AC in the boatyard! Out of the box thinking.
The full face masks are the boom.
All that work. And at the end you doing some chicken ass shit. That's the most stupidest thing I've ever saw. I thought you had some sense . I am so disappointed with you.
It's actually a perfectly acceptable way of resolving large delamination issues. Used all the time in boat repair. But thanks for you words of encouragement.
It is telling that you never (?) committed to any schedule or roadmap. I think, this is not for real. You are just putting a show for your fans.
We do remodeling and if u are looking to install a mini split buy the Mr. Cool unit they come with quick connect lines with refrigeratant In them already it's user friendly and will save u a ton of hassle installing it and money as it's so easy any noviset could install
Can you work at night or is the dock closed?
They close the gate at 5pm. We cant stay a little bit afterhours if we move the truck outside .but not at night .
@@SailingUma Ok like what you are doing keep moving forward.
You should have done this refit in the UK - some of us still have our central heating kicking on at night!
Nah. We've been in the UK in the winter. Never again!!!! Besides Sardinia is beautiful! At least we can venture off on the weekends and enjoy the sunshine ;)
We couldn't get vinylester to stick on pangas we were repairing I think because of the humidity. If it does stick its surface adhesion, not molecular. I have never used anything except epoxy since for anything but new builds. Imagine the creaking as the layers shift. Wish you well.
How about if you were to cover your decks with Space Blankets, or something of that sort? Slow down heat influx so your AC won't have to work as hard, and when it gets REALLY HOT later in the summer, the AC will be better able to keep up.
Yeah, get a tent to give Uma shade that may help.
that was satisfying, nice work problem solving
It took years for all the fiberglass to come out of my skin.
This went from a boat rebuild to a side show that is not funny .... see you when youbgo back sailing in 6 months
ha!!! 6 months! We wish. It'll be a bit longer than that.
refrigerate your resin, dont go below 50F. buys you a bunch of time.
Need weight for future. Could me like magnet or something to keep it from moving
Too bad the ac didn't have a heating settings because after Uma is finished you now finally have a good cooling and heating system instead of using a fireplace and worrying about the moisture problem with wood. But hey if you get the good battery supply personally I would have a backup switch to a separate battery bank with maybe 5 200ah batterys that would run off for emergencies and as a backup so say when your charging your main you have the backup to do alio motoring and if not then just for ac/heating so then when the main is full u switch to the emergencies backup to charge and have the main to power and emergencies to charge and use for those small loads either or. I think having 2 separate battery banks for main and emergencies/side loads would be great so you always have something that will work in case of a power failure or off grid situation when you was out in that area when you hada make a custom charging cord for the dock and at that time u could of had 2 separate banks 1 fully charged while main was being modified and still had juice of 5 200ah to run alot. But hey you could always use the generator you have as a backup or as a main/emergencie power supply to power the ac/electric heating to run and charge the batteries as well and have a line running to a good 10gal tank so you could have a full 24h to 48h run time because your generator runs what 12hs on a 2L/3L tank it has now imagine having a 10gal standby tank. That 10gal of fuel for both the dinggy motor and generator is 37L that 2L for 12hours would get you like 8 to 10 full days of run time of generator power to be fully complete offgrid power to recharge and power.. also i just notic dan head is almost hitting the ceiling dont 4get to not get use to the head space lol still need to install floors and water tanks and all that good stuff lol which is gonna take up space. She short so no issue but him he's tall he dont got much head room. Keep up the good work
Would butyl tape work for marine portholes/port lights?
We've used it before with out much luck. It's a sticky mess and never really gets a good seal. We had to replace all our deck fittings with sikaflex and never had an issue since.
Who did the whistling in the end tune....?
It reminds me of what a lot of people do to their old Hobie Cats after they delaminate!
That sucks cause they just like replaced the glass part...đđ
