As I became a furry and wanted a fursuit, I didn't really want to buy one right away, I wanted to make one instead. Of course, clear mistakes where made on my first suit. My second suit was a lot better, but I still made some errors that long time makers pointed out. My third one was the one I was kind of happy with. Between all the suits , all I did was do research and watch fursuit tutorials over and over for months. Take your time, there can be errors, learn from your mistakes, and try again.

Today I actually just received all the supplies to make my first head and have binged tutorial after tutorial to the point where I've stayed up till midnight lol
    I am a younger fur and I 100% agree with the fact that most peoples first suits I see dont look too great cause they either rush the base, complain material cost is too high, or rush other crucial parts of the suit ;;
I'll be 3d modeling my headbase myself and I hope to soon teach others how too ^^ but I got lucky because my parents bought me the hq supplies I needed to Kickstart my suit making ~~ but this video was helpful and I see a lot of people make these little mistakes that can make or break a suit ~~

For people learning to sew, I’d recommend practicing with making pillowcases or pillows first! They’re super easy and fun to make and honestly making pillowcases helped me learn to sew super quickly
You can also make them fun shapes to learn how to sew in different directions. You can make heart pillows to learn to sew circular shapes, star pillows to learn tight corners and sharp edges, and heck even smiley face pillows.

I made a LOT of mistakes on my first two suits 😅
The first one, I made it WAY too small and since I layered the foam, it didn’t stick together with glue.
The muzzle was just one piece of foam that was bent to look like a muzzle.
    My second head :
It is WAYYYYY too big. You would have to have the biggest head in the world to make it fit perfectly. I made the top of the head flat... aaaa...... the muzzle was pretty good, but I ran out of foam to make cheeks. So the base was just really plain and had no shape. I used felt for the nose and mouth lining, and it was really messy.
I have not finished any of these suits. And I will NOT finish any of these suits. Soon I’m going to go on a small shopping spree for materials and try to make a suit. So I hope it turns out!
And also. Skye, your fursuit tutorials helped me and my mom SO much while making my first suit! Thank you, and you will always be one of my favorite suit makers

You say that yet I think I've spent over $1,000 on all my equipment so far. My dad spent $740 for me on a sewing machine and my mom spent an extra $200 for me on this pair of Oster clippers that I asked if she would buy for me and she said sure. Technically I owe my dad at least half the amount of money for this sewing machine and I'm fine with that but that's another story.
I'm trying my hardest to become a fursuit maker and as you even know this is stupid hard to get into. And it's a lot of time consuming I've probably wasted a lot of fabric already that I personally bought myself. I honestly love Joanne's.
I have three different furs and I'm trying my hardest not to waste any of it. I have black white and this husky mix looking for where it's like brown and gray and black. I've got a lot of minky too red black brown and white.
The amount of stuff I've put into this is ridiculous. But I'm trying to follow your tutorials and they are not easy. I've gone into working on paws and I feel likeI should not be starting here maybe I should have started on tails or something. I think that'll be my next project once I figure out how to get some paws down. I have a general idea of what I'm doing but I'm really afraid that I'm going to screw up the fabric which is why I got some cheapo $2 a yard fabric to test my machine on and see what I can do to make and I even made some covid 19 masks which they came out okay but not as good as I wanted them to

I didn't realize how long it would take to really make one until I started making one. It actually turned out to be a great help to building my patience and perseverance when it comes to hands on projects. It also allowed me to realize that I enjoy hands on projects more than digital projects. It gives me a bit of euphoria and motivation to continue with the digital arts such as videography, photography and drawing that I also enjoy doing along side. Basically, just do a lot of research into fursuits and fursuit making, then jump into it and learn as you go. And don't get discouraged if your first suit turns out rough or bad because you can just do better on your next one and learn from your mistakes. Or at least that's what I did and I don't regret it. :)

Tried doing tutorials, but it didn't work. My Mom thought of getting a group of YoungFurs together with me and could help each other out making our Suits. My family struggles with money, so making a Suit is the cheapest route. I'm more of an artist then a Suit maker. I tried making paws, but.... They were too close together and you can't even make them out as paws.
Edit: Despite this, my boyfriend will buy a premade one for me on The Dealers Den. I've seen their prices and they look so cheap! I saw a 3/4 suit for.... $550? I was shock. dear young furs such as me, literaly listen to skye, learn to sew, oml its helped me soo much not just with making fur suit parts as it can benifit alot more than that. Example: you are running in the park with your friends and you trip and you get a hole in one of you pieces of clothing that you love so much, its only a small hole thats easily sewed up, but, you dont know how to sew. You carry on your day but the hole gets bigger and bigger to the point where you have to throw away that one bit of clothing that may have been very special to you because say your grandma that passed away bought it for you. See how if you just learned to sew that tiny hole you wouldnt have to throw it away

    For dinomask makers!
Take your time on the paint, if you take time to smooth your lines and find things to make perfect patterns in will surely become the eye candy that you deserve.
If you are replacing the strap on the back: PLEASE DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUR MEASUREMENTS!! I had to re-glue my straps about 4 times before it actually settled perfectly on my head.

I'm an older but new-to-actively-participating-in-fandom fur planning to make their own suit and man it's daunting. I'm lucky to have already come from a sewing background, but the general crafting aspect is going to be trying. The research is *very* important, I concur. I sat on the idea of making one for a couple years, all the while soaking in all the material I could, and I still feel a bit scared. I assume it's one of those things that gets easier once you actually get going.
But tutorials like yours have been extremely helpful! :D

For those that WANT a fursuit and WANT IT NOW, I’d recommend spending time saving up money to buy a premade (you can find some surprisingly cheap ones if youre open to buying secondhand- I recommend checking the dealers den, as its less likely to have scams) rather than spending a ton of time and effort saving money for materials, learning to sew and carve foam and clip fur and pattern and all that, and then having to patiently and meticulously create it. For me, I’m a really impatient person, and though I’m trying my best to learn to sew so I can make plushies (help), I know I’m wayy too impatient and have too low of an attention span to make a fursuit. I could mayyybe pull off a head, but thats about it lol.

The videos part is very true, Befor I started making suits all I did all day was watch tutorials for months and while making the head I watched a tutorial and replayed it multiple times to get it right, it looked good but at the time I was afraid to shave it but when I did finally shave it, it looked great. Tbh I love hand sewing, it's very relaxing and simple but it's a lot better and faster to use a sewing machine, I do have a sewing machine but my cats broke the spool pins off by nocking my table over so I'm now waiting for my new parts to come it. And this video definitely is very helpful for beginners! (Tad of a rant sry)

I'm making a suit soon! I looked at a ton of tutorials, realized I needed to use plastic instead of foam for the eyes, and sew the fur. I am going to buy an expanding foam base, just because I feel like I couldn’t make a foam head good.
I am a young fur and totally think everyone beginning to make fursuits should watch as many tutorials as possible, and maybe follow a pattern or buy a base.
