  • Zihwa is a female tattoo artist in South Korea specializing in floral designs. In South Korea tattoos have long been seen as a symbol of violence, membership to a gang, or at the very least, rebellion against mainstream culture. But Zihwa is trying to change the country’s attitudes toward tattoo culture by showing people that tattoos are less about disrespecting social norms but more of a work of art and self-expression.
If you enjoyed Zihwa’s story, download our free community app MOGAO and discover untold stories from Asia and all over the world. @@sacura605 ? how does being a woman in Korea make it difficult for her? You shouldn't believe everything media says unless you've actually lived in South Korea for a while. Foreign media (or media targeting foreign viewers) tend to overexaggerate certain things or be biased towards one side when it comes to South Korea. Idk if it was this channel or not but even with the spy cam incident in South Korea the video takes out the real fact that after the report the investigation team searched the whole of Seoul for months, yet found no spy cams. Also it never makes videos of feminists in South Korea calling men "criminals in their nature" and a professor writing public essay about men being insects with stages of pervertedness (from the Organisation of Philosophical Studies in South Korea). Do you know why? It's because this doesn't attract viewers from foreign countries because feminism is different in western nations. The mainstream wave of feminism in South Korea is vastly different; it's about degrading men, not about equality. Even the current president said he is a feminist and supported feminism, and the major Korean news channels are also very much biased (e.g. when the professor who wrote about men being insects got attacked by furious people in her online lesson meet, the news took out the information of her essay and only said "a professor gets attacked by female-hating crowd"). Those in their 40s and 50s won't look at youtube, so when they listen to the news they will just believe that it says. Being a man in Korea is very much harder than being a woman.

The problem with tattooing in South Korea is that the medical law simply does not make any exceptions, which means you need a license to do it. However, that's a license for medicine. It would therefore be good if laws were changed and they created a license specifically for tattooing. It's something which would benefit both tattoo artists and customers.
