I live in Korea and I can tell you that you often see people here wearing luxury items. However that doesnt mean that all those people are actually rich. Its actually quite the opposite. I know plenty of people who got themselves indebted solely so that they can buy designer stuff. It's common here for people to pay off the price for those items in monthly installments. Its all just make-believe. People just want to appear rich because the Korean society favors the rich and beautiful. Actually it's kind of sad. People here need to learn that your worth as a human doesn't depend on the things you can afford.
This comment is underrated... There are several rich people who don't see the need to flaunt it and many people who aren't that get caught up in chasing trends and attention. It's not to dissimilar to the competitive nature around studying and being a top student etc. However, there are plenty of people who also don't care and they are the happiest, even if a large part of the society might not think so. The hyper competitive nature in Korea is what has helped them to thrive in terms of national development, but at what cost.. The suicide rate needs to be addressed and priorities reassessed. Hard to believe. Not that they don’t comment on others’ outfits, I mean approaching “random strangers” to comment on their looks is very unkorean to me.
The first reason she gave is complete bs. Luxury items are not cost effective. In fact if you're buying items that are 15k and upwards I can safely say that even if I have to spend my whole life buying cheap items, like watches, for example, and even if they break and need to be replaced periodically I still won't spend anything near 15k on all of those cheap watches in my entire lifetime. Plus fashion trends change and items wear off, even if they're higher quality, so there's no way that lady is going to spend her entire life with only one hermes bag, she's gonna buy more than one. And the debt just piles up. Moreover, there are plenty of unexpensive brands that offer durable goods in quality that surpasses even luxury brands'. I hope no one gets tricked by that lady's faulty logic.
well said, i was thinking the same thing. i can think of so many brands which are lower than mid range and offer extremely great quality especially for the price. That i would no way call luxury goods cost effective myself, i think this lady is deluding herself on purpose to excuse herself from these expensive purchases and feel good about it in the practical sense.
to make a few, if only watches are concerned, then I prefer the Indian brand titan, they’re pretty affordable and long lasting, there is also Fossil and Guess which have a great bandwidth in terms of range and features, I bought my guess is watch for around 150 dollars or 12k in Indian rupees and haven’t looked back, If i was going to buy a rolex i would think of it as an investment rather than cost effective since i know they appreciate later on. In terms of bags i’m pretty frugal, anything less than 15 dollars for a bag that’ll last me 3 years easily
shes right in some ways but not in the sense that its worth spending 15k on a watch. I do agree that sometimes better quality is worth paying for. But not that much lol. For example, I would rather buy one nice pair of levi's jeans for $80 that I can wear for years than a pair of shein jeans that start fraying after a few washes. @@oceana311exactly. People who buy extremely expensive items use the “it’s more cost effective” reason to try and justify the superficiality. As a Korean AMERICAN, I’ve seen way too many extended family members and immigrants spending way outside their budget for luxury items and cars. Sad as FUCK imo. I get wanting to treat yourself once in a while but it really shows what we value as a society. Hate to generalize but Koreans are straying away from the traditional values that helped turn our history around and putting too much stock into bullshit
They got corrupted by Western capitalism and materialism, and brainwashed with Western ChristInsanity. Just like North Koreans got brainwashed with Russian Marxism.
Lowest birthrate for a reason. Everyone complains about the cost of things being the reason, but walking around with luxury items will make real estate companies think you can afford housing, so they jack the rates up. It's only common sense.
I have heard it’s normal for Neely rich societies! You can also find this kind of consumer behavior in East Europe. Other rich countries, such as Western European countries.
I think it’s completely find as long as you have the funds and aren’t blowing your whole money. A lot of people need to get their priorities straight. If you can’t pay the bills on time, and if you set aside savings you can’t afford it.
Sounds just like America
I’m the opposite. I’m Indian and we are cheap. We like a bargain. I like two for one deal.
I'd go to China and buy fake designer things 😂😂😂
This comment is underrated... There are several rich people who don't see the need to flaunt it and many people who aren't that get caught up in chasing trends and attention.
It's not to dissimilar to the competitive nature around studying and being a top student etc.
However, there are plenty of people who also don't care and they are the happiest, even if a large part of the society might not think so.
The hyper competitive nature in Korea is what has helped them to thrive in terms of national development, but at what cost.. The suicide rate needs to be addressed and priorities reassessed. Apart from that, they are some of the friendliest and polite people around.
It’s the same everywhere in the world but of course that doesn’t mean everyone buys into it

looks are very important for koreans. i heard a lot of stories about people visiting their country and the koreans would literally approach them and comment about how bad their outfits look
everyone's a fashion police!!
I think her logic works but not for extreme prices like the ones that she memtioned
@@oceana311exactly. People who buy extremely expensive items use the “it’s more cost effective” reason to try and justify the superficiality. In reality, those items are priced 100x more than what it costs to make them and has no bearing on their quality at all. It’s just that expensive because of the brand name. There’s a reasonable difference between spending a bit more money on quality items and spending an exorbitant amount on something of the same quality.
Trueeeee
I could never survive in a superficial society like this because I really don't care too much about appearances.
That’s why I love living here in Europe. People here don’t care what you wear. I can look hobo with no judgemental gaze around. I can send my son to school with a just woke up look. 😂
