    I tried to become more involved in the Autism community on Instagram and INSTANTLY got shot down with a barrage of abuse...from accounts of people with Autism.
    Hopefully, I just found a couple of bad eggs, but it does beg the question of the difficulties of people with Autism who want to become 'influencers', should they have inflexibility of thought. Which is clearly who I discovered.

    Such a good topic to talk about, especially these days... Open debate is needed as well as not taking things so personal

    • @AdultwithAutism

      Open debate is definitely needed. Autism needs to be understood, and the only way to get there is to learn along the way, and be willing to be wrong and need to re-adjust. Being shouted at isn't exactly the best way to get people on board...even if you're right with what you're saying!

    And I thought we autistics were supposed to be the logical ones! I'm in my forties so I hear ya about the warriors...it's frustrating enough to communicate in a way that people would understand without taking what we say the wrong way and jump down our throat. You'd think other people on the spectrum would understand this 😕 ugh...kids...anyway, I'm really loving your channel...your dry sense of humor makes my day 😆 keep up the good work, I think you're valuable to the community! 😂 Oh, my! I have struggled with this behavior over the years, and it's just gotten worse and worse. These "shut up, I'm an ally, and I know what you need" crowd are almost as bad as the openly genocidal ones. I wish more people would focus on educating themselves and setting a good example of how to treat others than trying to force the thing they learned yesterday down everyone else's throat.
    Everyone has the right to their opinion, but the idea that all opinions are equal is nonsense. Those who think that the loudest voice, biggest crowd, or most threatening presentation means they're right are quite dangerous. Calm, reasoned discourse only works with those who have actually thought about a subject, though. If someone hasn't, and they just adopted the position of others to fit in, they will feel threatened by your effort to actually debate and become more abusive.
    Thanks for talking about your experience with this. I really enjoy your viewpoint and how you present it like just chatting with friends.

    • @AdultwithAutism
      @AdultwithAutism  Před 3 lety +4

      Haha, thanks. I am chatting with friends, and unlike real life...I can't be interrupted, so I can get a word in 😂
      Opinions are fine, you just need to not be offended if someone disagrees! Sports teams are a good example, you can argue all day why your team is 'better', but it's personal choice. Winning all the cups might be one persons perspective, whereas someone else might prefer their ethics, the kit, the players, the manager etc.
      I belive chocolate is nicer once it's been in the fridge, not a lot of people agree...thats fine! I won't lose sleep over someone disagreeing.

    The colour of the infinity symbol represents the spectrum of autism like the colour spectrum and the infinity symbol represents the spectrum of autism is infinite (not like the colour spectrum)I think. I feel like the puzzle piece fits me better and makes more sense for me.

      Thanks for the explanation. I think I'm now more confused as where I originally noticed it was on a page that was saying 'Autism is one', and were angry that people try to label where they identify on the spectrum. The saddest thing is, EVERY single, group/community/interest has this level of dogmatic perspective (of the interest) within it. IDC if it's motorcycles, autism, politics, heck, even self-help, the deeper you go, the closer you get to the dogmatic types within it trying to gatekeep or control the narrative of the thing and being so stalwart against other ideas or opinions.

    Closing your accounts was a great idea; it prioritizes and protects your mental health, plus it prevents your account from being compromised.

    Hi Paul, another great video! These days rainbows and unicorns can become political! I agree with you about the high functioning aspect in certain situations. When I go to the market, or mall, or any place with lots of people by myself I need to stim. I typically use a classic fidget spinner but if it becomes needed I will hand flap a bit to get through it. People often ask what I am doing and I say I am autistic and need to do this because shopping can be difficult. Sometimes they start talking like I am a three year old. So by adding the additional clarification that I am high functioning lets them know they can talk to me normal. I am not elevating myself to some higher level. I am trying to communicate! I have a deficit in communication so helping people communicate with me is paramount. I also agree with you that the puzzle piece makes perfect sense to me. The rainbow infinity symbol not so much. As for the evil Autism Speaks, I agree they are evil. I have been living with autism for 61 years, but only recently learned what my condition was called. So, like you I am learning. I don’t like being bullied when I ask a legitimate question or question an opinion about a certain situation. It is weird that autistic people are bullying autistic people. Bullying is a common thing in the early years of autistic people, me included! I stick with people like Dan in the Aspie World and people like him who are positive and engaging and open to expression. And of course you. You are very clear in thought and intention and open to many things. We are very different people yet kindred spirits in the way we think. Can’t wait for you next video! I am glad you are feeling relaxed😀

    • @AdultwithAutism
      @AdultwithAutism  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Bryan! Hope you're keeping well. Sounds like you are applying common sense there...how very dare you indeed!! You use a fidget spinner, I have a pen (might even see it in my hand in some videos). There is a difference right away, but I won't bash you over the head for it. I agree, it's very weird that when you reach out to learn or gain clarification, you get bashed for it...or that you do something that helps you help others know more about you in a comfortable way. You're not doing it to belittle anyone, it's for you in that situation you find yourself in.
      I think my next video will be about 'The Cure for Autism', as I didn't even know people try this, and I find it...hilarious.

It explains a whole lot of my life experiences, and I'm happier than I have been in a very long time. I'm still awkward, and I still have 10M questions in my head (and out my mouth) ALL THE TIME, and I still feel like I don't fit in anywhere, and like I'm on the outside of everything looking in, but it's all right, because now I know there's a reason why I'm this way. ❤

    I’m new to autism and neurodiversity even though I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD for over ten years now. I’m sure I’m autistic too but I’m yet to be diagnosed. I know I would qualify for the old Asperger’s diagnosis today if I was to be assessed.
    As for autism, I can’t find any community where I can fit in. The Rainbow Mafia are the most vocal and aggressive if you don’t agree with their world view. I work with autistic teens and adults and I’m yet to meet anyone in the real world that is as hostile as those online in the autistic community. If there is such a thing as the autistic community. We’re so different and yet so alike in so many ways.
    This is why I like watching your videos. You think independently and have critical thinking skills. And I can relate to you, fella.

    My motives and intentions are often misread. I come off cold. How have you dealt with gossip and not care if you’re not understood!? It’s as if some think we aren’t enough? They don’t know our struggles yet they pass judgement? And this doesn’t help me want to share this part of myself to many. The stigma and ignorance would it be worth the price? I’m so done trying to fit into society! It’s as if they are trying to change us and we have control over our DNA? We aren’t broken! We just don’t desire the same things that others seem to put so much worth on. I’ve made mistakes all the time. I’ve allowed things into my life but setting boundaries. It’s exhausting to try and fit in! Be genuine. And why do people think all people who are on the spectrum are all the same?! We are individuals and more than just our diagnosis! I’m slowly gaining the courage like you have found! We all get to where we are on our own time and in our own ways! One day I hope I can show others they aren’t broken and help break the stigma! Thank you for helping people like me. It’s still so new. 🙏🏻❤️

    • @AdultwithAutism
      @AdultwithAutism  Před 3 lety +5

      Youre more than welcome. Like you, I welcome the differences. We are not all the same, and I cannot see a benefit to assume we are.
      I know of two other people in my extended network who have Autism. One of them in a gardener, knows every plant, and its all he talks about. The other is consumed and is fixated on water temperature and shower pressure. If that isn't correct for him, there isn't another conversation to have and he won't respond to anything else.
      Then there is me...not interested in gardening in the slightest, and a shower not at the optimum temperature or pressure just wouldn't upset me 1%. But I acknowledge that it's a concern for them and wouldn't undersell it. I try to offer solutions regarding the shower, and listen to the gardening stories because...why not?
      It's okay to be different, what isn't okay is trying to make people feel bad for it 👍🏻

  • @elmossy
    @elmossy Před 3 lety +5

    Hi Paul! Great video as always. I always find your videos so interesting because, as you say, it's another perspective.
    About the Instagram description thing: As you said, they didn't put a voice memo, but people who may have a visual impairment might have a 'screen reader' (but it cant 'read' an image so the poster will write it int he description instead). I see a lot of 'image descriptions' used on tumblr, especially on meme posts and things, so that people get a better idea of whats happening.
    About the puzzle piece (sorry if you already know this): When I first came across it, like you, i understood it. It wasn't something i necessarily found offensive or rude. I think the reason so many autistic people do take issue with it is because of specific hate groups that use it as their logo (?). So Autism Speaks, which is an american "charity", has listed their priorities to -cure autism -find the cause of autism -research into screening for autism in unborn babies to potentially get them aborted. They are, essentially, an anti-autism hate group parading as a charity. The logo for this company is a blue jigsaw puzzle piece, and i think that's why a fair few people choose not to identify with the logo/icon.
    Generally I dont see why the reaction to curiosity, particularly in a community that's meant to encourage knowledge about under researched things, is so hateful. I think it's farr too easy for people to forget that some people go on the internet to genuinely learn, they involve themselves in conversation to overcome previous ignorance, btu are immediately shut down as though they can never change.
    About functioning things: When i got diagnosed the doctor said i had 'very mild autism' which i found really funny because i would crumple to teh floor and be unable to move or speak if the seating plan was different, in my alevel classes. But I don't want to bombard you with my opinions of neurotypicals passing judgement on things they, by definition, can't understand.
    Sorry this comment was so long! Have a good one!

      @AdultwithAutism  Před 3 lety +3

      Your comment was great! I learnt a lot from it so I appreciate it. Its also exactly how responses should be when someone like me doesn't understand and is after a bit of clarity. I never knew of the reader, but now it makes perfect sense.

      Hope you and your 'mild Autism' are doing well 👍🏻

    I've seen people attacked and banned on discord. Someone new joins the server, they ask a few questions or make a few comments. Their comments are met with slight hostility. They defend their comments and it just escalates back and forth. Others see someone already known in the community fighting a new user and they join the attack on the new user. He gets reported as a troll to the mods and they ban him. From my perspective he wasn't looking for or causing any trouble. Yes he made some rude comments later but that was only after he was met hostility and things escalated. I saw no reason for the initial hostility other than he just said something someone didn't like, which it probably was just misinterpreted, and he got attacked for it. Of course he is going to try to defend his comments especially when they are misinterpreted.

My experience in Autism Communities has been that there is a collective who share an opinion, and they tell you that you're wrong for not sharing their mindset. In many respects, inflexibility of thought is a generalised catch-phrase often denoting a dogmatic representation of the touted ideas of so-called authorities and the mindless zombies of whom blindly accept the perspective. In other words, it is right only because it's generally accepted to be so, and it is imposed onto us with an iron fist by those authoritative figures. They are as, or far more so, inflexible in their conceptual viewpoint as they like to accuse others of being.

    I don't really care what represents Autism. And I don't care what they call me. I'm just not like other people. Whatever. But if it makes sense to say high functioning just do it.

      Yup. Autism is an individual difference, so treat it as such. The people who try to gatekeep are the ones who cause 'harm' 👍🏻

    I am surprised that autistic persons would be attacking another in keyboard comments. I am sorry that happened to you. I am watching this 2 years down the track and hope things have changed for the better. The few autistic vloggers and Facebook groups I have found seem to have very kind and helpful comments. We should be supporting each other, not belittling or brainwashing. We really do need to work together to educate the wider community: a monumental task. There are so many outdated descriptions like high functioning or even Aspergers, but a lot of people have some point of relevance to them, so it’s not a crime to refer to these terms, if only to say that it used to be called this.

    • @AdultwithAutism

      It hasn't changed, if anything it is a lot worse. Im still not a part of a single community out there because of it.
      Labels like high functioning and Aspergers gets Autistic people heavily attacked...the problem is, a lot of these people were diagnosed with these terms and are a lot older now. Then they're shouted at by people more than half their age, demanding them to change instantaneously. That won't work, and this is something the 'demanders' need to learn.
      It's an individual difference, and the world is tough enough without this in-fighting. 👍🏻

    Hey just found your page. My LO is autistic and I would definitely and do call her high functioning, doesn't mean she's better than her classmate who is autistic and non verbal. It's just my way of describing her level of autism. Ppl are too touchy these days it drives me mad.

      I'm with you there. It's a tough world to navigate at the best of times, and it's made harder by people trying to gatekeep Autism. We're not being difficult for not following the narrative that's forced on us, we're just using our opinion. If people use or don't use HFA, it doesn't affect anything. But if it helps them express themselves better, then I'm all for it 👍🏻

    I avoid Instagram like the plague.
    I have web-friends in less developed countries, like Egypt and India. Reading and seeing what they have to deal with gives me a surer sense of perspective about those ridiculous keyboard warriors who take 'woke' to Monty Pythonesque extremes. Exactly the same with the LGBTIAQ crew. I will not put pronouns in my signature block at work because it is simply not true that it matters to any degree to me which pronouns people use when addressing or referring to me. If someone chose to refer to me as They or She, instead of he/him its not going to make my beard and dick suddenly disappear. I'm not going to feel devastated or insulted, not least because as a gay man I have always had a certain degree of gender nonconformity anyway. If some other people are pathologically insecure and require constant 360-degree social validation of their assumed, boutique gender, that's squarely their problem - not mine.
    I have read quite a number of people coming to the conclusion that you did about Facebook, including professional journalists, but the truth is, it is exceptionally flexible; its all down to the choices you yourself make. I have liked lots of science news outlets, and The Guardian, and a variety of pages devoted to special interests, and surprise surprise, that's what comes into my feed. Stuff I do want to read. I only have a small number of FB "friends" (haha), and I never bother to respond in any way to any of their postings, and so over time 'the algorithm' realises I am not interested and doesn't present me with any of the mundane personal posts from them. It is actually pointless me having any FB "friends" at all, since I never look at their stuff and I never make a single post myself.
    Similarly, with Twitter (I ignore the petulant gestures of the Uber-jerk who now owns it) I know its largely a viper's pit, but I use it solely as a customisable porn stream. I never even see the vitriol, the sniping. A point worth making here, as this is an autism channel, is that some people (like me), despite having a normal (or even high) sexual libido, are most definitely NOT interested or willing to be sexually involved with any other human on this planet. Pixels on a screen - yes; all good and fine. Germ-ridden, sweaty, odorous human bodies - NO.

      Good to hear your facial hair and genitalia doesn't fall off. I'm the same as you in that respect, I've been addressed as Paula a thousand times in emails, it's not something I run to HR about. It's work, it isn't personal...so they don't get to know personal things about me unless I share them. They won't be pulled out of me to appease others.

      @@AdultwithAutism I once accidentally mis-gendered a man who emailed me at work about an impending class-action legal case against the government (of New Zealand, where I lived at the time) that his organisation was banding my company in on by default; I wrote back "Madam; hold your horses!" . His name was Francis, and I overlooked the subtle difference in spelling (Frances for a female), When I finally met him, at a government convention centre in Wellington, he proved to be a huge, barrel-chested, bearded, bass-voiced Big Daddy; I could not have been more wrong. He took it in good humour.

    Hey, slightly late to the party here, and I've been enjoying your videos and directness, but this while I'm not one to preach, this one jarred me slightly. The puzzle piece motif has been rejected by many autistic people as it was widely used for many years by Autism Speaks , an American company. It's problematic in that Autism Speaks advocates for the Autism 'cures', and is a money-making organisation tha profits by securing funding from sponsors under the guise of supporting the families of autistic people through the use of / promotion of ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis), which can be essentially viewed as a non-consensual conversion therapy to encourage autistic people (mainly young children) to 'appear' more normal. ABA and Autism Speaks have many supporters, many of whom seek to profit from it. In both the U.S. and U.K. the puzzle piece motif is inextricably associated with Autism Speaks and ABA, and has become a signifier of the traumatic abuse and longstanding disregard of the rights of autistic people. It's fair to say that for perhaps not all, but many in the autistic community prefer the infinity/ neurodiversity symbol for it's message of inclusivity, as opposed to the puzzle piece's message of misplaced exclusion. ABA was 'masterminded' by Ivor Lovaas, the same person who decided that conversion therapy for gay people was useful, so not a good dude in general, IMHO.
    Anyway, we're all here to learn, just wanted to highlight some of the recent history that might have led to the backlash you received. Written with the best intentions and wishes.

      Absolutely. But please remember what I said...it was about the images. I fully appreciate how what they're connected to can bother people. My point is one of complete simplicity...given the choice of JUST the imagery, I'd choose the puzzle piece every time because I cannot understand the rainbow infinity symbol without it being explained to me. The politics are not a part of the choice of image when I spoke about this 👍🏻
