  • Kerpu spot welder review. My very first time using a device like this. Time stamp at 6:20 for me beginning to use it. I tried it with 3 different type of nickel strip. It just was not strong enough. I could pull it apart easily compared with others I have seen on CZcams. I will be returning this unit. Perhaps I was doing something wrong? Comments or constructive suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
    UPDATE: THIS UNIT IS SO MUCH BETTER: www.amazon.com/Welding-Machin...

    I had some 2mm from years ago. I use a welder similar to yours. I simply put it on manual mode full on and hold the probes still after the first zap and zap it twice. WALA !! It worked.

    Thank you for the video. It helped me with the spot welder’s use.

    Would it not have been better to practice on the strips alone before trying on a cell?

    I just bought a Kerpu, but it has 12 "gears". Just got done rebuilding a DeWalt battery. Used the nickel strip supplied with the unit. Auto setting is opposite as you found out. Strips welded flawlessly on #4 setting, did not pull loose. Cleaned battery ends before I started. Battery now charging, looking like I'll be rebuilding them from now on.

    The brand name is upsidedown in the position you have it in. That's why you had it set to manual when you thought it was auto.

    I have the exact same Kerpu unit with 7500 mah battery. You must have gotten a broken one. I can’t go full power with 0.1 mm strips as it blows holes in the negative side of the battery. I can get a good weld with two strips stacked on top. It’s odd that yours couldn’t weld. It should be able to weld 0.15 strips on high setting no problem. I also have the BIFRC DH20 and it’s not as powerful as the Kerpu. And as everyone mentioned light pressure on the rods does the trick. I enjoyed your video, thank you.

    Wipe the area to be welded (battery and strip) with alcohol before welding?

  • @Afrocanuk

    I think what will help is to use fine sand paper on both the battery contacts and the metal strips in advance. Make sure the strip is seated flush with the battery contact before tap welding.

    Power might be too high, burning straight through the strip. Ik this was a while ago, but you might try power level 4 or 5, if this really can do .2mm strip, then .15 wouldn't need full power

  • @h8GW
    @h8GW Před 2 lety +1

    I've never welded in my life, but I'm pretty sure it's perfectly fine to use adhesive tape to hold the strip down at one end until you tack the strip on.

    • @en2oh
      @en2oh Před 2 měsíci

      I saw another CZcams-er using some magnets on the other end of the strip. Very clever.

  • @markkurtis8637
    @markkurtis8637 Před 2 lety +1

    Maybe, tape? Tape at the opposite end wouldn't be an issue and then you change it to the other end and weld the previously taped end.

    Did you return it or keep it. If the tacks hold somewhat is that good enough or not? I was just going to buy it on Amazon for Lorex wireless camera packs four have gone bad plus my rechargeable black and Decker hand vacuum batteries need to be replaced.

  • @Chilllybob

    The file is very cheap its for cleaning bumps etc off the batteries, use steel wool to clean the probes. I have a similar spot welder Seesii. Anyway nickel strips that come with welder are .1. They always supply thin strips that you wont really use unless you spot weld them together which actually works. You need to know the amperage thats going to go thru the strips to know what thickness is safe. Too thin strip & high amps draw will burn the strip in half & possible cause a fire

  • @noyoujanemetarzan1677

    Gear = Settings
    On every smartphone there is a cog gear icon which represents the settings screen, hence, why the chinese machine translation (probably Baidu translate) for "Settings" is "Gear".
    Anyway, I was wondering if there was a setting which increased the pulse duration of the spot weld.

    I have seen good reviews on this and I am about to buy one. Probably 2 years too late to tell you anything useful but the manual and auto mode were around the wrong way because you had it upside down! I thought the name Kerpu being upside down would of been obvious lol. Also the instructions (which you somehow didn't understand at 0:22) says not to apply too much pressure or you will create a weak joint (burn through). Another thing to note, using the probes at a 90* angle to the work give a larger contact area and therefore a larger spot weld. I will update my comment if need be after my one has arrived and been thoroughly test.
    Regards, Cam

      Well I'm back after watching more videos and reading comments on both this Kerpu and the BIFRC spot welders. It seems it is 50/50 on whether you get one that works and one that dosen't. Also they both seem to shit out after a year. I have discovered that I can get ones that use standard 18650 Li-ion batteries instead of customs sized Li-Po's which means I can easily upgrade the batteries to high quality ones when the original poops itself!

    DONT push on the propes, let it touch gently on the strip :)

      Well, enough pressure that the strip is touching the battery surface...

  • @MichaelrennieG
    @MichaelrennieG Před rokem +1

    You have to much space between the welds, more space more resistance less current between the weld less power which is less heat..

    Hello sir , I hope all is well ! I just found your channel not to Lon ago and I’m trying to catch up with all your findings todays is 10/02/2021 you posted a video earlier that day on a smaller unit and I had saud I have almost the same ! Well this is the one I have the same one and this is the I opened and modified please only if you know how to give it direct power using a old usb cord and that’s how I use mines and I still can use it portable and works for about two hours and then I have to charge …..loving the great work sir and don’t give up I’m in my mid 40 and I will say this maybe it’s not you it’s the vendor where you get your packs from ? Thank you Jose for your kind words. I find myself just trying different things now. I originally started off with my battery packs and trying to decide whether I wanted to create one big battery pack using eight of these things and an inverter a solar charge controller a case etc. Or if I wanted to split it into four and four and create some backup for my bluetti also. For some reason I keep running into problems. I am almost thinking of getting rid of all of these scooter batteries and building a lifepo4 system at either 12 or 24 volts. Do you have a CZcams channel showing your setup?

    At 13:00 I got sick of cold joints and used my objective mind to fix it. I built a sub miniature vice clamp for the black wire out of steel and clamp the negative to the nickle strip. And send ALL THE CURRENT to one probe. That doubles the heat in the red probe rather then sharing the current in two probes. When you think of it, a real welder does this every day. That catch is the negative clamp has to be a large surface area clamped tight squeezing the nickle strip. That way the negative clamp will not weld itself to the nickle. Now you have all 100 amps going to the positive probe generating twice the heat. Turn down to 1 or 2 gears because you'll blow a hole right through the strip. True spot welding is describes as two compatible sheets of metal being welded. This is impossible with Batteries. Your welding a strip of Nickle to a tin, alum or steel block. That needs to be approached with a "Welding" attitude and NOT a spot welding attitude. Sure it's still spot welding in a way but with a different technique. Don't through out that 0.15 strip, you can get around it without the zapping it twice milarky. Mini needle nose pliers make a good starting point to build your clamp, I filed down the pliers teeth grip and put a high tension spring on the handles of the pliers. You'll have to search the net for a short through 20 to 40 lb shallow spring. A temporary fix would be a gaggle of rubber bands. That got me by for a while. I build my own Battery packs for a 48v E-Bike.
