John Martyn, OBE (11 September 1948 -- 29 January 2009), born Iain David McGeachy, was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. He has been described by The Times as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues"
True genius 💙
Oh this song. Makes life worth living, so beautiful
Still excellent in 2023!
What is there for me left to say? so lucky to have seen him live, great talent, great musician. Thank you John.
antonio rossini i had the pleasure in the 80's 90's Great Man!!!
I was so lucky to have been there.
I was lucky enough to be at this gig. As the last notes of "Couldn't Love You More" faded away there was a moment or two of stunned silence from the audience. Then someone called out from the dark, "John, don't ever die". And I guess in a way, he hasn't. Special musician, special music.
Even off his nugget, the geeza played it right. Love and miss you John.
Lugged this album (vinyl natch) and Van the Man's "A sense of wonder" around Europe backpacking in the mid 80's, wonderful memories...
JM did everything. An amazing talent. One of my biggest regrets never to have seen him live. Thank God he left us with so much to listen to and watch!
I love that song since I heard it the first time, nearly 30 years ago.
Remember that John and Beverly provided the greater U.K (as such)with the folk music of the sixties there for the Rolling Stones, Beatles and such. His heart was broken more that once but his artistry shone after each... Solid Air plus twenty plenty moore.
Brilliant. Got to love John 😍😍😍😍
A true legend :)
never see the likes of him again ..what a voice...sob!
The best!!
Damn I love him
And they asked for an Angel that could sing. Why did you say "Me" If you had kept quiet, maybe this heart might not be broken. But I'm happy you are in heaven, sharing your love and compassion with the people that would have missed your talent.
I love and miss you John, with all my soul.
Gaz
Lovely bass by Allan Thomson to support the song...
John is groovin' on this. Must have been an amazing set.
Nick Drake and John, the last of the romantics, thanks for wonderfull music, rest in peace
By no means the last!
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY :-) Thank you. ....I'm just going to have to press"replay" ....AGAIN!
Hello my good friend, excellent! post superb video from the late John Martyn,

Hair that I dont have standing on end! I know your out there mate, and I know Im going to find you. Across the abyss, I can hear the laugh. Love and miss you.
Guilford University, Surrey . Can"t remember the right year 1982/3..Great night.
I’m thinking 84. Wow. I’m old.. First was Leeds poly in 82/3. Still got the ticket somewhere.
Bass is ace. Sapphire far better live than on record
fucking awesome
I let the currents run...
Ha ha..thanks for sharing your story..good one!
This is amazing not gonna lie. Cocaine and misery has made for some crazy business.
momentary lapse of reason ............
Does anyone know what pedal he's using for the lead tone?
Do you remember the "Sols Arms" with the twat that we threw out? And me an you getting the bottle of gold watch off the guvnor? And him saying to me, "If he gets pissed and cant play I'm taking the coffers off you! You did. I did. And the boss got a punch in the earhole.
One of my fave songs. Too much going on in this version. Less is more.
You know nothing. If He thought it was good who the fxxxx are you to say anything.
Kindest regards
Keep quiet
Completely. His late eighties and nineties live work often had way too much sax for my liking. Still a brilliant song. He was best when more minimal, 3 or 4 piece band, or solo, or with Danny Thompson.
Amazing singer so many vocal tones of pure beauty shame that his amazing guitar solo seems to be playing over a guy with a saxophone still playing as john is soloing listen and see yourself R.I.P very great man john xx
Jimi Hendrix Yeah - during the 90s JM often had a sax player in his band that way over played ... I saw him live many times and all I wanted to hear was his guitar playing.
Neal Ghoshal Totally agree, some great guitar playing was marred by overplayed sax, such a pity, we shall never see his like again.
+Jimi Hendrix I like the 'fusion' of the two, nice jazz edge to it.
@Bluegrassbella
Correct, but I hope someone comes close. :o)
..tänk bort 80-tals frisyrer, skjortor, produktion och Stefan Holm på keyboard...bra skit!
Melts my heart, love you matex
