I remember the effect Joan Armatrading’s voice and diamond shaped phrasing had on me when I was a child. Hearing DOWN TO ZERO come over the radio was almost paralyzing. I felt what I heard, but would never understand the adult lyrics. Even today this performance rakes up through me. A writer of the time said of Armitrading, that she created “some of the most deeply personal and emotionally naked songs... of our times". For me, this song, arrangement and performance are immortal. I will never understand it, like I will never understand TS Elliott’s “The Love Song of Alfred J Profrock” but somehow that makes it all the more compelling. I think loving things I might not understand but sense are true, is a most powerful expression of freedom, which is not at all-available to all.
