Dakotas Conference of the UMC Breaks Ranks

  • After a conference Zoom meeting to present the Dakotas delegation and the issues they will be dealing with, there were follow-up questions that were addressed on a conference Q&A document. Whoever wrote the response was candid in a way that the institution of the UMC would almost certainly not approve. This sort of breaking rank is a breath of fresh air when institutional forces are working so hard to control the narrative.
    The frankness of this document is really quite rare from within the UMC umbrella. Take a few moments to assess these issues without the institutional bias. Especially if you aren't quite informed yet on the issues at play, this is a good way to get a brief introduction to the topics at hand.

    So appreciate this author’s Q&A honesty. If there had been more honesty, truthfulness and bravery from people way back…all this disaffiliation may have been avoided. The UMC could have moved to be more faithful, not less. I am not and have never been a delegate. Sadly, I don’t feel equipped. I do hope the Global Methodist will give good instruction on what is required of a delegate and how important it is in the life of all in the GMC.

    As other denominations have demonstrated: those who claim to have been bullied and discriminated against become the bullies and discriminatory ones once they have authority. My local church did not leave the denomination, but I did.

      I think the ones bullying and discriminating in the UMC have actually never received much of that treatment themselves. Rather, they do these things in the name of those whom they extol as martyrs. Leftists use historically marginalized peoples as cudgels against their enemies.

    It has come to the attention of the Dakotas Conference that the General Conference Questions and Responses summary document highlighting the mission and ministry of our delegation, originally published on April 8, 2024, was infiltrated, and altered. This document has been replaced with the official document and it is available for viewing. ELCA - Evangelical “Lutheran” “Church” in America. Lutheran in name only. Those of us who are considered confessional Lutherans call them “Everything Luther Cautioned Against.” UMC is already there.

    To your comment regarding "GMC leaders" attending the GC, I wonder if they feel the same regarding UMC organizations and leaders petitioning a presence at GMC events....their is a GMC conference in the South who denied applications for UM vendors at their AC last year

    • @plainspokenpod

      I honestly can't recall speaking to that. I don't know what I have to say about that. GMC representation shouldn't be at the UMC gathering for any purpose other than witnessing what another branch of Methodism is doing, as a few other Methodist bodies already do. However, WCA is a legitimate caucus group in the UMC and should be there. Their position is to advocate for the freedom of local churches to be able to decide their own affiliations, which is a fair position to hold. I wish it wasn't regarded with such hostility. I can't really speak to the hypothetical of UMC leadership coming to GMC general conferences. If they want to, I guess that should be fine. I'm not sure why they would want to.

    This is the not the first time dealing with the African Church. The Africa Countries has a major role in this process. Why are so many of your program deals with a Church that you left. Regional Conference issue is not new. You should know this if you were so active in the UMC. You are educating the UMC Member and not tell us about the Great New Global Methodist Church structure and how it is better. The General Conference process I think has not changed for years. Please correct me.

    I agree with the basic immorality of how the African delegates are being treated. But you are too emotional with your blanket accusations of immorality when people question retired UMC pastors being able to "continue to advocate for the Global Methodist Church and disaffiliation." Some people may not understand why they are doing this advocating. Even if they do understand - even if they are wrong - it isn't necessarily immoral to question who should be allowed to advocate. It depends on the person and the reason. Being too broad with labeling just causes problems.

    • @plainspokenpod
      @plainspokenpod  Před 3 měsíci

      Fred, you're right to correct a brother who is being too emotional. You're also right to insist on the importance of being exact in one's speech and not cause harm by being overly broad. I don't want to be guilty of either of those behaviors, so thank you. Unfortunately, I am not remembering a time when I got emotional about retired UMC elders advocating for the GMC. I can recall making some calm statements about the immorality of depriving clergy of health benefits they have paid into. And I can recall getting emotional about unfair treatment of Africans. But I can't recall getting worked up about the topic as you have laid it out. So if you wouldn't mind, if you have energy for it, could you help me to see the place in which I did get too emotional about this issue? Thanks.
