Today I wanna talk about Why Lonzo Ball is changing his shot in the NBA. Y’all seem to like seeing things about Lonzo’s unique shot and keep hitting me up on insta about Lonzo so let me know in the comments whether Lonzo should change his shot completely or should he keep his old shot. Alright, let’s get into it.
Just three weeks ago I made a video on Why Lonzo Ball Is Shooting Better and it looked to me like he was figuring out his spots and what type of shots to take. Then he had this stretch of games where he was just trash. I mean, he hit the side of the backboard with a 3. He went back to taking rushed shots and taking shots out of rhythm. Lonzo was also terrible at one other thing, midrange jumpshots. He never particularly chose to shoot midrange jumpers because his shot form just didn’t work well. It seemed as if his form didn’t allow him to aim properly without having set feet. Without a midrange threat, defenders could sort of drop down once Lonzo Ball came off a pick because either he was driving to the paint or passing. He’s not doing anything else.
Then out of nowhere Lonzo Ball was unleashed against the Pistons in Lonzo Ball fashion with 15 points. And it’s pretty sad that Lakers fans have to get excited when their number 2 pick in the draft score 15 points. He also had 11 assists. He shot 7 of 8 from the field but the way he got those points surprised me. Apart from layups and dunks, Lonzo hit a couple of midrange shots. He hit a rare two hand floater in the lane which he shot from the right side. Then he put a player on skates and his a one legged midrange shot from slightly to the left of his head, but noy all the way to the left like he normally does. And the shot was nothing but net. Then he banked it midrange jumper with ease off of a pick and once again he shot with the ball a little more out and slightly to the left. And finally he hit another midrange shot from off a pick and this shot was released from right in front of his head and dare I say, looked normal? But these cases are anything but normal because they stand out with dope designs so check out athletic cases in the description. Lonzo ain’t big baller enough to have his own case, yet.
His three point shot was still normal, but Lonzo is changing his shot from the midrange so that he could release the ball quicker and off the pick and roll. By bringing the ball towards the middle, he doesn’t have to bring the ball all the way to the left to shoot and shaves seconds off the whole process. He also can have better control off pick and roll situations because the ball isn’t moving as much and he can use his follow through to guide the ball from midrange. If Lonzo keeps this up, I feel as if he could change his form for the 3 point line and be more of a consistent threat since he won’t need as much time setting up his shot. He can also make defenders step up on him and create more opportunities for others which allow his great passing to show up. And that’s why Lonzo Ball is changing his shot. But what do you think? He just developing a better form from the inside the field which later will strongly help him to be able to switch up his shot in the 3pt line. Sometimes he will use his regular shot but sometimes he switches it up. Practice will make him better but to be the best he has to develope something no one expects in the nba.

Hes learning, if he wants to shoot when going to the right, the shot must be changed to over the right eye, similar to a right handed floater, but if hes going left or shooting a standing jumper he can use his old form. I think as he keeps getting stronger his form will change.

It all depends on what really works for him u can't just change a jumper overnight. Don't get me wrong the mid range shots he was taking were looking real nice but he has to feel comfortable and cofident in the shot

it's obvious that he spent injury time getting is shot back in order and it did work, then the coaching staff most likely decided «now that his 3pt are falling in, let's focus on mid-range instead of changing his shooting form from deep»
has would be expected teaching him 2 different shooting forms at the same time gves him too many things to think about when it comes down to shoot the ball, with time he would naturally use both without extra thought but the ideal is fixing his form altogether so that he shoots from deep and mid-range in the same way (aka using the same basic motion but adapted for the difference in range)
it will also help him with FT, which he did not struggle with in college, at FT the only thing that changes from college to NBA is the pressure
I think most people still underestimate how deadly he can become if he finally works out a consistent shot, at his position he is naturally facing some of the shortest players on the match and with his length he becomes unstopable, the best way to see that is taking a look at one of the games against the Celtics where he shot and despite Kyrie efforts he was still several inches too low to even contest Lonzo's shot, that might result in a bunch of +1 situations where the opposing guard jumps but is too short but tries to do something and ends up fouling Lonzo
the other way will be shift a taller guy to defend him but in a team with 2 forwards almost 7 feet each (Kuzma and Ingram), + the Center and the shooting guard you can guarentee one of the big guys will be faced with the shorter guard, in those moments Lonzo can simply pass the ball to whoever got lucky with the opposing PG covering him, and easy assist for Lonzo
I started using lonzos jumper more after just using it as a meme because that shit is comfortable

Lonzo did really good his 1st year in NBA. He will average a trip double next year. All the hype we expected him to get 20 8 and 8 bit despite that he did great.

It's just a natural change to the increased pressure of the NBA. His old style was good for college, needs to change up some for NBA.
From what I have seen he still shoots much better from one side of the court than the other due to his shot style.
Still not what you would expect from the number 2 pick in the draft though. Magic needs a slap for that imo.

It's not that it looks ugly, but it's slower and more difficult to release and his % has been low.
Lonzo should change hus way of shooting because his old way was super trash but it kinda worked. But his new way of shooting the ball is gonna be soo much better because he can follow through with his shot and make more of them. He can also have a higher shooting rate than last season.

I think the bigger problem is he puts no pressure on the defense as a penetrator. In the half court set he's always just giving up the ball and spotting up for a (usually wide open as no opposing team respects his shooting) 3pter. He shot a dreadful 49% between 0-3 feet and then you have his abysmal 45% ft percentage. Those kind of numbers aren't going to make people respect you as a dribble penetrator and a pg these days has to put pressure on a team in that regard. He can't finish, he barely gets to the ft line, and when he does he can't make them. People always compare him to Kidd, but he was actually putting pressure on the defense as a penetrator his rookie season. That was also when you could handcheck, so you can imagine how dreadful Lonzo woudl be in 1995.
Just bc your the # 2 pick doesn’t mean you have to average 25 points like what people still don’t understand about lonzo is that he’s not a 25 type of dude he’s never been that college he averaged about 14 . His game is based off of being. A pure point that can rebound etc
Lonzo is a smart player. Doesn't need to score a lot. Just needs to see those lines to make his best passes. His also a good defender. That's why lakers will be great under his wing.
