There are so many things wrong with Soap's death in the 2023 version. First Makarov and a group of his men just come out of nowhere and take Soap and Price completely by surprise. Then Soap gets up in front of Makarov's men and stabs Makarov in the right side of his neck, but Makarov is somehow able to not only survive this, but also shrug it off, and then overpower and shoot Soap in the head with his right arm. Then it turns out while all of this was happening, Ghost and Gaz were just a few feet away and could've just shot Makarov while Soap and Price were on the ground. After all of this, Makarov just runs away as if he didn't just have a knife sticking out of his collarbone a few seconds ago.

    • @ZetsuboNoShima
      @ZetsuboNoShima Před 6 měsíci +204

No. It’s said literally at the beginning of the mission makarov and his men had taken over a train in the tunnel and had bombs planet, you were both making your way towards each other. Soap stabs makarov in the shoulder, not neck, and gaz and ghost arrive just seconds too late as makarov and his goons make their escape. It happens really fast, like in 6 seconds. By the skin of their teeth he got away

@@ZetsuboNoShima In this situation, the difference between neck and shoulder is minimal at best. Makarov isn't a massive guy. People with his physique don't just shrug off being stabbed in the upper/middle trapezius area like that. Suffering a laceration to the muscles in that area is a debilitating injury and would make it impossible for someone to move their upper arm or at least severely limit its movement, yet somehow Makarov was able to fight off Soap and shoot him with his right arm. Makarov was also stabbed with a 4-5 inch long blade, so he should've been bleeding profusely, we even see blood gush out of him when the knife goes in. Pain tolerance is one thing, but no matter much willpower someone has, they can't overcome damage to their motor functions.
As for Gaz and Ghost's arrival, the crossover platform they were on was quite long. If you look at gameplay, you can see the bomb, which is where Makarov would've been standing completely in the open, from the entry point into the platform. You even shoot at Makarov's men standing around the bomb from the entry point before you actually enter the platform proper. For Gaz and Ghost to be literal feet away from Price the second Soap hits the floor from being shot in the head means that Gaz and Ghost would've been on the platform with everyone else or at the very least at the entry point when Soap and Price were on the ground before Soap gets up to stab Makarov. There are no obstructions between the entry point and the bomb, so Gaz and Ghost would've had a clear shot. Even if they didn't want to risk friendly fire, they could've just shot one of Makarov's men or even just fired warning shots, to get Makarov to shift his attention and probably flee because he's standing out in the open. It doesn't make sense for Gaz and Ghost to do nothing when they were clearly in a position to do something. It also doesn't make sense that Makarov didn't even seem to realize that they were approaching.

The only thing I didn't like about Soap's death is that in the new version, there was no emotion, sadness, regret, crying for Soap's death. He is simply shot in the forehead and those in front just stared. When they mourn him, they just remember how he was, that's all. I didn't feel much of a sense of loss in his death. In the old version, the fact that Price regrets his death, suffers, cries and tries not to let him go, makes you much more emotional. As if I wasn't saddened enough by his death, I felt even more sorry to see Price regretting it. No matter what I say, the old one is better 💔

I like 2011's scene because the game gives you this sense of impending doom that hits like a truck; you're fighting through endless waves of enemies to try and save a dead man walking, only to see just how bad it is once you lay him on the table. On the other hand, 2023's scene is interesting because it kind of leaves you...I guess, shell-shocked? The OG Mw3 had the emotion and music as well. Starting from the moment when SOAP and Yuri forcefully had to jump out of the building, which was surprising and shocking as well. I was shocked to think SOAP is gone. But I was glad to see him alive. On the way to the safehouse, i was thinking all his moments and how he survived Shepherd's stabbing and everything. But i also felt it's the end as i saw him getting lifeless and losing his life slowly while entering the safehouse. After his death, Price going back to MacMillan was even more emotional because it was about an old man seeking his revenge for his fallen comrade and companion.

What the remake lacks of are the intensity and tension that the predecessors had. At the time, CoD campaigns were so intense that we got dragged to what was happening around the world and how we made bonds with the characters; CoD campaigns now doesn't quite have that intense feeling we all felt because somehow we got disconnected to what is happening and not much bonds are made in the process of the campaigns. Also lack of Hans Zimmer soundtrack :)

OG modern warfare: You're fighting a cunning villain who uses deception and trickery to get the upper hand, the event catches you off guard in a manner that isn't contrived or unreasonable, the death is as unexpected as it is emotion wrecking. You couldn't have seen it coming, and it was at least moderately grounded in authenticity.
Soap was a player character and companion that's been with you for all three of the games; you feel it with the emotional music score and all the subtle and not so subtle- *meaningful*- details in how the other characters deal with his death.
Years later, you still feel the gravitas of that moment.
new modern warfare: you're fighting a stereotypical OP action movie supervillain apparently who can just magically sneak up on you with a full squad of men and shrug off (what should be) a disabling stab wound into his right shoulder/collarbone to uno reverse card judo bullshit shoot Soap in the head.
There's nowhere near the same level of reaction from other characters
Soap's death is completely contrived and treated as cheap and easy shock value more than anything else.
man, I could rip the new MW3's Soap death scene seven different new assholes if I had the time and consideration for being more articulate in just how terrible they did it.

So by the time we got to the third the entire time during that mission I never thought he would actually die until he was on that table. In the new one (I’m refusing to play the campaign because I’m so mad at how short it is) we don’t have that same connection with him. Yeah he was awesome (and hot) in the second game but we didn’t know him in the first game so we already don’t have the same connection to him. Given how short this new game is I highly doubt we get much more of that connection. I’m just disappointed that they had a great template for an awesome story and they threw it all out the window for their greed.

An interesting thing to note about the original, the mission up to Soap’s death almost mirror’s CoD4’s “One Shot, One Kill” mission, where Price had to snipe Zakhaev and escape carrying MacMillan. There, things despite the dire circumstances of the escape end up working out alright. Here though, things go south before you even take a shot as rather than being met with a target, you see an ally since game 1 strapped to a chair rigged with explosives, and despite Soap’s initial wound not seeming so bad, as the mission progresses you see his condition deteriorate. I love how all the original MW trilogy titles manage to find new ways to use missions they had setup before and play on what you expect in a clever way, instead of just either doing the exact same thing again or throwing everything interesting about the original idea out in a cheaper idea of subversion.
Or to put it more succinctly, MW3’s campaign was a lot cooler than it got credit for.

2011: More Hollywood style drama action approach. You feel you're in a Michael Bay film and Soap's death is far more emotionally heavy especially the way Price reacts to it.
2023: A very realistic and mature approach to how modern warfare is actually like and the way soldiers deal with grief of their fallen brothers is depicted very accurately with the real world. Price, Gaz, and Ghost give a very stoic reaction to Soap's passing because that's how real soldiers deal with death as they face it every day in battle. So so called lack of emotional response is less dramatic but more accurate to how soldiers process death in the real world.

I know a lot of people are giving it hate but I played the trilogy back in the day and the story in 2023 lives up to that legacy pretty well imo. And the approach has matured to be more accurate to soldiers and how they deal/react to war IRL

    I like both of them,
2011's was very long and drawn out, slowly losing hope, which made it more sad.
2023's felt more realistic, he died fighting, and there was no final words or final goodbyes.

What makes the original MW3 so striking is how they drop a plot point that Makarov was associated with Yuri, then literally drop you into the action before that can really sink in. When you have the chance to really consider the information and believe Soap could survive, he succumbs to the wounds. Price leaving the 1911, the same pistol Soap returned back in MW2 with Soap's body also gives that personal touch since he was the last of the original SAS squad Price had.

My biggest problem with the new games version is how he was barley a character before he died he got introduced in mw2 2022, then he only really got one character building scene which was the stealth mission with ghost price and him never interacted then he dies i dont even know him and prices relationship or the one that was starting with ghost you can kill a character off fast and brutal but man do the character work first so i actually feel it, they are trying to go off earlier cod games so we are like "soap no" but the dude aint even the same character

They missed a perfect opportunity with the second attempt to use the words inscribed on the clocktower at Hereford 22 SAS HQ. "we are the pilgrims master, we will always go a little further. It may be beyong that last blue mountain barred with snow, across that angry or shimmering sea." It's how many fallen SAS members are honoured during services.

At the end of the day they're soldiers, they had a job to do they knew what they were getting themselves into and that they might not come back. So naturally in the new one they were fairly emotionless, however by the tone of prices voice and the mood of the scene you can tell they all felt it. Where as in the old one they use visual emotion to get across the point. I personally preferer none, as i appreciated the reality of the new one, but also remember the old one which made me really feel his death.
Edit: To anyone saying they did soap dirty and made him look like trash, well no sh**, to Makarov he was a piece of trash. Nothing but an obstacle in the way of his plan, one which needed to be thrown away like trash although he wasn't that. At least this time soap had a flighting chance and wasn't blown up from a distance.

In 2009s mw3 there's alot of build up with the friendship between these characters, as early as 2006, the man had excellent fruit killing skills😂.. i grew up seeing these guys go thru it all for 2 games until the only one left was price.. it was beautifully tragic story where every character felt like he had a purpose and role, even if minor to push the story foward.. its why i will always like the old school games. They were passion projects with alot of time put into it, now we just get yearly releases like their iPhones, no ambitious ideas just cut and copy paste elements and assets with new names slapped umder a nicely wrapped 70 dollar price tag..

i personaly think the 2011 was way better with the sudden twist of makarov knowing yuri, soap still saving yuri first, soap going from wanting nikolai to get them out at the start to him giving up and wanting to be left behind at the end, the captains reaction to soap dying and the scene with yuri flying down the stairs ist a good fucking meme
i think 2011 would have been perfect if it had a ending scene like 2023 with soaps ashes thats the only thing i liked in the 2023 one, the rest of it just makes it feel undeserved for him to be killed so sudden and sadly boring as a ending to the game

BS, If the game had real grit there would have been real stakes earlier and not shoed in at the end because they need someone to die to make Makarov look more threatening than he really is for MW4. Even Shepards death was out of left field and anticlimatic. They couldn't kill off anyone important till MW3 and who knows, he might magically appear in warzone for some BS reason.
