Another sad fact: During this game OST production, Yasunori Mitsuda's mom passed away. This is why there are much emotion in this game's ost. You could say this is the tribute to his mom.

It's tragic in it's own way, but real life emotions are quintessential to transcribing feeling to both a melody and a narrative and as sad as it is to say if this is true, it's the greatest thing that could have happened to the cultural zeitgeist around this game was for this to happen as his loss coincided with our collective loss in that both her life and this game ended and the world would never be the safe thereafter. @@owenmcgee891

This is the end credits song. It's about a girl who was trapped in a void beyond time. Suddenly she hears a young boy crying and her heart yearns to reach out to comfort him. She finds a way to reach out across time and save him before she is trapped entirely. In the end he also finds a way to save her, but she has to return and they won't see each other again in his lifetime. Before they part she vows she will find him again "someday". She's still out there looking and hoping to meet him again.

You see on the desk that was in the intro a picture of Schala "Kid" Zeal and Serge together, taken like a wedding photo, right at the end. The desk where the book is being read is from their home. So they did actually meet each other in that lifetime. She can't quite remember so searches across all timelines to find him and winds up on the beach where the worlds used to meet.
If Serge carries on like normal by not getting the "True" Ending he just lives out his life in the village and marries Lenna instead. Schala "Kid" Zeal decides to leave him be and says goodbye.

    盗めない宝石 Lyrics
The jewel that cannot be stolen
    幼い手に包んだ
    Wrapped in my immature hands
    震えてるその光を
    That trembling light
    ここまで辿って来た
I have been pursuing all the way here
    時間の縁を彷徨い
    Wandering the edges of time
    探し続けて来たよ
I have been searching for you
    名前さえ知らないけれど
Even though I don't even know your name
    ただ一つの想いを
    There is a simple memory/feeling
    あなたに手渡したくて
That I want to convey to you
    時は愛も痛みも
Time is both love and pain
    深く抱き留め
    It restrains people deeply
    消してくけど私は
The me that has been erased
    覚えているずっと・・・
    I will always remember...
    私の胸の奥に
In the depths of my chest
    いつからか響いていた
Since when has it been resounding
    夜露の雫よりも
More than a droplet of dew in the night
    微かな囁きだけど
Even though it is only a faint whisper
    凍て付く星の闇へ
Towards the darkness of the frozen planet/star
    紡ぐ祈りが
The prayers that I have put together
    遠いあなたの空に
    To your distant sky
    届くように・・
    In attempts to reach you
The way the japanese language is structured this kind of music can have many different translated interpretations.
It could even be the "you" the person refers in the music are "themselves from another time", so when you see "you" it could simply be a self reflection.
It could also be a loved one.

The music from chrono cross is a musical journey in itself. Poignant, lively, dramatic and beautiful. I played chrono cross many years ago when it came out but i still go back and listen to the music whenever i get that itch of nostalgia. Glad you're getting a chance at hearing the music, even if it's one (so far). :)

    • @jesseallen3109

Why only listen to it when nostalgia hits? listen to it whenever and whereever. Ive had Time's scar on my saved music SD card/mp3 player (yes, I still have a few) ever since I played Chrono cross. The same is true for Chrono Trigger (i even have like 12 variants/remixes of Schalla's Theme), Final Fantasy, Baiten Kaitos, Command and Conquer, Xenoblade Chronicles, Etc. Course i do get a lot of people asking "what IS this?" in both the positive and negative inquiry when I play it via Bluetooth speaker. But i also get those who recognize it instantly and love it (like with Final Fantasy 9's Seymour battle, or a kid around 14 noticing i was playing world 2-1 (shop keeper variant) of Crypt of The Necrodancer,) and others who swear they've heard the music before and make a best guess.
It IS a bit sad though when people shit on music just because it isn't lyrical (as with most Video Game Music), or in another language (as is the case with Shwarz Stien featuring Gackt. I only marginally like gackt due to FF Crisis Core) as it shows that if people can be soo closed off to the wide wonders of music to that extent.. no wonder they are closed off to many other things as well.

@@kikukat8780 well.. okay.. fair enough. But i wonder if that means I'm just one walking nostalgia trip and stuck in the past?
I always thought it was just that today's music doesn't always catch my attention due to either my own preferences (like most rap i don't care for) or just overall not that interesting (WAP comes to mind) or something else that's specific to that song or artist..
Then again those are mostly pop songs and I tend to gravitate more towards lesser known musicians or things that are willing to take risks with experimental Music (BT, and shoegazer music come to mind).
I should have also prefaced with the fact that my playlists are like.. 70-80% video game music, with anime music and a smattering of Folk metal, Rock, Pop (superman just hits real nice), Electronica, Trance, New age, World Fusion, Shoegazer, post rock, Japanese pop (aforementioned Schwarz Stein.. damn it, knew i spelt that wrong first time), and some other genres. HEck i got some music from a game I didn't even play but someone mentioned it to me and i got it.

I do get the occasional weird eye when i listen to a heavy metal song, followed by a song like this one from chrono cross to darude's sandstorm and so on forth. The entire game, imo, deals with the melancholy of life. Even the beginning of the game it talks about loves list and the tides of life continuing on. Cold, callous, smothering. Yet still, it goes on. The pasts that we have and the lives we could have had. If only things were different. What if things were different? Would we be together now? Or would you have left regardless? A friend lost, a lover left, an opportunity missed. How would our lives be if things played out differently. this and "time's scar" are legitimately some of the most beautiful pieces of music video games have given to the world. it's a such a shame that the version of "gale" the game uses is pretty poor and what's worse is that gale is the main battle theme, so you hear it a lot, but the orginal version of "gale" from the sort of prequel to cross(but post trigger) called "radical dreamers" is excellent stuff.

I wonder more if it's based off just how people have been exposed to music.
most people are exposed to that which is on the radio. and THAT synthetic favoritism by playing the same musicians and styles over and over causes people to a favoritism to music they've heard before.
I mean, it used to be a thing (and still is) where a metalhead willn't listen to country, a rocker willn't listen to classical, a country fan willn't listen to Electronica, a Rocker willn't listen to Folk Metal, etc. And all because when they first hear it they instantly think "WTF is this? it isn't what i'm used to hearing.. i dislike it!"
Strangely enough I've noticed that video game music lovers tend to branch out the most. I think it is because video game music doesn't always draw the distinctions between genre's of music and so VGM lovers know the utter truth of:
      MUSIC IS MUSIC.
Regardless of what genre it is. If you don't like it don't say "that aint real music!" acknowledge what it is and move on if you don't like it. Or delve more into that new genre just to know and understand it and you may find a composition or musician or album within it that you may actually like.

Great. Ar tonelico and Nier Gestalt/Replicant was one thing, but this... Now you hit me in another one of my nostalgia feels. I liked Chrono Trigger more as a game, but I definitely like Chrono Cross' soundtrack more. Radical Dreamers is one of my favorite songs in the game. Love the simplicity of just using the acoustic guitar. Also, your interpretation of the song is so eerily accurate. Then there's the true ending of the game itself with this song playing. Btw, I also happen to be a bigger FF fan myself, with my obsession being FF6. Still managed to play the Chrono games, mainly because Chrono Trigger was the first game I played that had a NG+.
Random thought, but related to the games, one of the Chrono series albums I 'recently' listened to was To Far Away Times, a special arrangement album featuring some select tracks from both Chrono games. The music compared to its game counterparts was very interesting to say the least, especially Time's Scar. Personal favorite from that album is Schala's Theme, mainly because Laura Shigihara, who already did a short cover of that theme, was the vocalist for that track. She has a YT channel under the name Supershigi. Either way, I do recommend that album if you ever wish to give a listen.

well truth is, they originally aren't.
Chrono Cross was originally made as a draft for Final Fantasy 8 but was rejected and put aside as a side-project. Then (i don't really remember the details) for some reason some higher ups in Square or something wants it to be linked to Chrono Trigger, and thus they had to abruptly made some last minute changes. (or so I've heard, cmiiw).
Chrono Trigger itself also suffers from the same case, it got rejected as Final Fantasy and became its own thing, iirc they tried to compete with Dragon Quest (thus why they chose Toriyama Akira as the character designer)... so is Xenogears , Saga Frontier , and Vagrant Story.

I absolutely love your analysis of this song, and not only because how how spot-on it is.
It is really amazing how songs, especially simple ones, can invoke such reactions in us. In this instance, as if the young girl managed to craft a song capable of carrying all the emotions of her experience and offering them upward in the hope-against-hope that it reaches the target of her affections. And we are given privy to such a profound 'nakedness' - using your instance of the world - of her soul that it leaves us in a reverent somberness as we also recall similar experiences that invoked these emotions within us.

This song is my all time favorite above all. And if you want some fun fact, when the developer finished the game, they did a final screening for the ending scene and the music presented or the first time to the game director. Once the scene and music ends, he just cried. That's how hard this song hit and how it embraces the feeling of the story. Ngl I also cried the first time I heard this

This song is speeeeeeeeeeeeecilly good, because its the song for the best possible ending, but even when its the ending where everyting is "fixed" it a terribly sad ending!, this song captures exactly that feeling (the lirycs are fantastic too), this is a song that moves feelings in so deep waves, and the voice is just PERFECT.
Chrono Trigger and Cross has an incredible OST, and both games use emotional music during the whole game to enphatize the scenes... (VERY masterfully done)
you are not mistaken by your analisis, it is a love song, and it is about loss...
the main character of the game is a "dream"... he does not exist, he was created by a scar in time during the events of the first game, there is an entity by the name "lavos" that entity consume time, when the hero "chrono" tried to defeat him he unleashed a domino effect trough time and dimensions, chrono cross is about THOSE fisures, the "hero" Serge is in reality someone who is dead, and the "heroine" is the one lavos is fused with and using as a catalist to consume time and space... (both games happens at the same time, both are precuel, and both are sequel, its hard to explain as one game is about time travel, and the other is about dimensional travel), key point here is "scala" who is this inmensibly powerfull magic user is the one that lavos is fused with, and "kid" the girl you use during the whole game with the main hero (the dream) is an alternate version of scala (just as Serge).
when you reach the secret true ending of the game KID and schala became one, and Serge (the hero) dissapears as he was never part of the reality he was just but an echo "a dream" hence the radical dreamer.... "Kid" (she is the one that sings this song), and you get some pretty images of her living her life in modern era remembering a dream that "never was" (they will never met again).
The game has a "happy ending" but its also a tragedy.
it fucking sad and pretty at the same time (they saved reality itself at the cost of everthing).
    here are the lyrics
I held onto the trembling light without letting it go.
Wandering at the edge of the time I've traveled so far
I've been looking for it, and I don't even know its name. (*interpretation, "looking for it", means the light she mentions, that light is Serge*)
I want to share just one feeling with you.
Time is full of love and pain.
    But I remember it.
    forever. . .
For some time now, it had been echoing in the depths of my chest. . .
It's more of a whisper than a drop of water
This prayers I spun in the darkness of the rising stars,
May it reach your distant sky. . .
(this is super strong because contrary to most interpretations of the song like the one you used here they usally use "HIM" instead of "IT" and clearly refers the song towards serge, but that is actually META, this is the player knowledge, NOT HERS..., she does NOT remember him as she is not Kid either... she is a whole new entity with the inner power of Schala and Kid (her escense) as time and space was correcter and what "happened" never did, so what she "remembers" is a dream, an echo, nothing but a feeling, a sensation, the light that took her out of the darkness "lavos" the time devourer)
she feels the feeling but does not really know what it is asides from the longing... and that's the melancholy she feels (again... the radical dreamer).
    fun fact...
Yasunori Mitsuda was a sound designer who asked for a chance to compose for a game (the first one, chrono triger). They gave him a year to do the whole soundtrack and he worked himself so hard he was hospitalized with Nobuo Uematsu finishing up the final parts of the soundtrack.
He did such an impressive original sound track that they ended having Mitsuda doing the music for their most important IP's (this one included)

Hoo boy, agreed on the vibratto. Holding a simple, clean note is so much more peaceful and appealing than warbling all over the place. This is one of my favorite musical pieces, and a big reason why I'm learning guitar. If you've a mind to, you might appreciate listening to the moonbowmusicmovie collaboration with supershigi on this piece. Two guitars, two vocalists and a double bass. Absolutely gorgeous. (Edited to add: One of the great parts of the vocals, on top of the clear, steady tones, is the gentle touch she has. She doesn't compete with the guitar by belting out her piece, she weaves gently around the guitar and lets the melody do the work. Inspired piece, this.)

Chross has some pros and cons to it in terms of gameplay mechanics, but Mitsuda's music from it might actually be the best game OST ever produced. That said, if you want to play any of his classic titles, play Chrono Trigger (the DS version is probably the definitive one, as someone who bought it release day on SNES) and play Xenogears. In terms of classic Square I'm a diehard fan of Matsuno's, but I both are must-play titles in my book.
Also it's weird to remember that I played Radical Dreamers on an emulator with a printed fan translation, just like FF5 but an entire generation later. Those were the days.

  • @fearthemightyedelgard8137

This is one of my favorite Mitsuda compositions, it's so intimate and somber at the same time, I can't help but just feel it in my soul.
Also worth checking out, even if it's not for a reaction, is the "To Far Away Times" arrangement, it's from an official rearrangement album from Square Enix featuring Sarah Alainne, who did Xenoblade 1's ending theme. This is the only video of it that's on CZcams at the moment, it seems the original upload got taken down. It's an FMV that spoils the ending though so if you ever play the game I'd change to a different tab.
