Maaaan she is beautiful. How can anyone be that beautiful? It is kind of surreal. His husband is a very lucky man. Not to mention her smile, what an angel 💕

She’s wonderful in her character as Serena . You almost feel sorry for her. I have to watch her as Sarah Walker on Chuck to help counteract Serena.

At times my heart breaks for Serena. The call to be a mother is so strong in some women. I can understand why she is the way she is. Her parents (especially the mother) is probley the root of all of Serena's misery. Her desperation to have a child is almost tangible.

i don’t care how desperate you are to have a child, enslaving women, holding them down as your husband rapes them, and then stealing their babies is absolutely vile and nothing could ever justify it. serena is evil and possibly the most hypocritical person on that show. using other women as sex slaves because you want a baby is not understandable in any way shape or form.

I loved the novel and its sequel, and I liked the first season of the television series, but I had to stop watching early during the second season because the torture scenes were just too gratuitously graphic, and it felt like the show had taken a turn from having a clear narrative purpose to showcasing spectacular suffering. After the women were rounded up and herded like cattle, mock-hanged and then a woman's arm was tied to a gas burner and set on fire, I turned it off. The violence seemed to be on display at that point and not to serve any specific narrative or thematic purpose. I understand from others that the second season went on to become even more explicit.
I'm still interested in the plot, however, and so I appreciate being able to watch interviews like this one. The novel ends exactly where season one of the television show ends, and the novel's sequel, THE TESTAMENTS, picks up many years later...it sounds like the subsequent seasons of the television show occur during the interim, and as if Margaret Atwood factored the events of the TV series into her second novel.
I wish the show would pare down the graphic cruelty and only show it occasionally, when it best serves the narrative and so that it can have the effect of shocking viewers rather than making us note all the creative ways they are coming up with to disturb us. I'd like to continue watching it, but I can't watch something that feels like torture porn. It's such a bummer, because the story is so powerful.

Okay, just for a quick explanation; this scene you were talking about WAS incredibly important for the narrative effect. You as the viewer should see what they do to you for simply not wanting to particute your friend. It was necessary to see, because the underlying message was 'You'll get punished because of your deeds' and not because of the unfair judgement. The expressions of June and the other maids kind of are relevant too, since well, June was the only one not being punished, even though she was the one responsible (the other woman has refused first, I know that, it's just they would've simply began if they didn't see another one refusing, because they were afraid) and the group dynamics are something you should think about in that scene. Also, if you watched further, you would've seen, that (SPOILER) June tries to run away. After she saw what they do. After she saw the pregnant girl chained up like a dog. That's an important thing!
So, while all of that torture really is not my thing, I DO like it there, because it's necessary to really understand June. She sees that everyday. It's normal for her, hence her personality adapted. Yes, after a while, you would know what they do, but this constant reminder is quite intelligent so you constantly are reminded about the brutality in there and so you can correctly sort in the mental torture they'll get put through (i.e. blaming for ra*e, han*ings etc.). You, as a normal person, would 'see through the bullshit' immediately, but if you always see these repetitive tortures, you begin to understand they can't see it. They blame themselves, because it's easier. So...yeah, that's just my opinion.
I'm not saying you should like/watch it, I just wanna defend the show and affirm it's no torture porn.
