  • British couple's first impressions of Hong Kong
Watch as Jack and Paige take on Hong Kong in a 4 part mini series, exploring in depth the city of Hong Kong. In this video you we capture our first impressions of this special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. We start by grabbing a coffee and are shocked at the prices, before heading over to The Star Ferry and sail over the Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon. Brunch is the done thing in HK so we go to Shine Island Cafe, a highly recommended spot for tourists and locals alike. We order all the best parts of the menu, the famous Pineapple Bun, Satay noodles, Cold Hong Kong Milk tea and a mysterious omelette? After a filling brunch we take a walk and discover an old church, and try to reach to top of one of Hong Kong's famous towering buildings.

Thanks for coming by Hong Kong! I really enjoyed watching your videos. Just wanted to add that bacon and eggs are actually very much part of a traditional Hong Kong breakfast, because we’ve adopted a lot of Western foods into our diet. At home we sometimes have Western style breakfast like eggs, ham, sausages, cheese, bread, oatmeal etc., and at other times we have the more traditional Chinese kind like congee and Chinese style eggs and pickles and other traditional side dishes. There are actually restaurants that serve this kind of traditional Chinese breakfast (I would recommend going to older districts like Happy Valley or Wan Chai). The place that you showed in your video is more of a 1950s kind of Hong Kong diner (born from that era), serving Western-inspired Hong Kong style food, but the food served there is more like fast-food than a traditional meal. I personally don’t know anyone who has egg tarts for breakfast (so I would say it is not really a breakfast food), but milk tea definitely is a staple here! 😁 I feel that Kowloon has a different culture from Hong Kong Island, and when most people think of Hong Kong, they associate it with the Kowloon culture. In any case, I hope you enjoyed your experience here! Thank you for visiting our city!

19:43 now that is a traditional Hong Kong breakfast, let me explain
if you go to traditional cha chaan tengs (translates to tea restaurant, basically a Hong Kong style cafe), especially some really old ones, you’ll find that there are usually always 4 sets
The “breakfast” is macaroni with ham
The “lunch” is spaghetti in soup with char siu
The “special” is satee beef noodles
The “express meal” is rice noodles with preserved vegetables with some pork
You can actually request a different type of noodle (instant noodles/rice noodles/macaroni) when ordering
These four sets all come with a type of egg, omelette/pan fried/sunny side up/scrambled, can also be changed upon request if they have
And also bread, whether that would be just plain white bread, toast, or 餐包, I don’t really know how to explain the last one but it’s basically a bun with butter inside
Oh yes, you also get coffee or tea (but actually it just means drinks in a more elegant way, there’s lemon tea, lemonade (lemon and water lol), milk tea, and then you get to obscure ones like Sai Yeung Choi Honey, and classics like ovaltine or Horlicks, hot or cold)
That is a complete HK style quick breakfast

The bread and egg is of the same set with the noodles... we usually call such kind of thing as "common meal" 「常餐」One of your drink should be included in the set package (but quite probably need HK$2 extra for a cold drink)
And pineapple bun should be much better with a piece of butter within 😂😂😂 「菠蘿油」
And Alipay HK is totally compatible with Alipay. We all use this when weekend travel to Shenzhen 😂😂😂😂

Tips for taking the ferry to Kowloon:
    1. Just say you want to go to the Star Ferry; then they shouldn't guide you to the wrong place.
    2. The upper deck is available but at a higher price (and from a different entrance) since you get to avoid the smell and noise of the engines, and the AC is available on two ends of the upper deck.

Everything is more expensive in Hong Kong, but China doesn't force its will on Hong Kong, hence the 1 country 2 systems policy. Same with Macao. LONG time visitor to Hong Kong here!
It’s undoubtedly undergone much change in the last 30 years
Coffee shop culture is a relatively new thing there (you’ll notice very few if any local older people in the shops)
Prices for many things improve significantly the further away from the centre you get
The women on the streets on a Sunday are domestic helpers (part nanny / part servant) who work in peoples homes (there’s about 300000 of them in the city)
Still there? Visit an outlying island (I’d recommend Cheung Chau - pier 5 : walk left from where you joined the ferry in this video)
Visit the New Territories (Tai Po Market is a favourite of mine - it’s on the light blue line and you can go straight there from Admiralty on Hong Kong Island)
    Enjoy!

It just opened last year, mainly do business with mainland chinese tourists. this restaurant has so many chains in Kowloon and New Territories. The Pineapple bun is pretty good i sometimes buy take away from there. You also can ask Pineapple buns with butter next time. For the milk tea or coffee should try hot ones, much better taste then iced ones. For the star ferry, since you paid for lower decker, so its not allowed to go upstairs, as its a bit more for upper decker, with difference entrance with more $. The one you entered is a complex between shopping malls and office, I go there sometimes. I guess you shot this video is during June not July, as these two weeks weather mostly sunny but super hot. Have you tried the chicken tail bun? It is like hot dog bun stuff with sweet coconut fillings. In Chinese it is called "鸡尾包". My father always buys this bun when I was young.

The mark of a good vlogger is how much time they're willing to donate to the topic, for the viewers to see new things, as opposed to filming their own fizog over & over again.

Hongkong is a international city, its'financial system is tighed up with the west. So everything is expensive, as cost of living in the world is pretty high.

Canny video, I love Hong Kong but haven't been back after China kicked off and there were protests all over the place. I will get back there eventually. I wonder if you try the sprite with the plum thing in it in your next vid. That is mega and difficult to get here.
I saw a comment from you on Twitter that you might be going to Tokyo to watch the Toon, if you are it'll be good to bump into you both. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Hong Kong.

Been to HK for the umpteenth times and just visited again last month. After the unrests followed by Covid, I feel HK has somewhat changed but can't quite pinpoint what (maybe less international now?).

You went to the wrong boat, you need to go to the Star Ferry besides that there are 2 classes. You choose the lower deck.
The service at the restaurant is normal, a few waiters have to serve many tables.

18:11 the waiter is a newbie and inexperienced, the waitress had to take over to help the customer change the type of rice. Hence she was distracted. The omlette and toast is probably part of a set meal for the beef noodles, which also comes with a drink

10:32 for the ts sound, just think of it like a balloon loosing air, “tssssssss”, but for “Tsui”, in English it’s just ch + schwa sound (uh) + ee, so here’s how you pronounce it: tssssssim sha chuhee
