For those who are actually interested in the truth, this is the answer to Bob’s question:
Firstly, this apparent objection is not new to Muslims. Rather, it was Muslim scholars themselves who addressed this simple issue. Open any book of Quranic exegesis and you will find the answer there.
As for the answer:
The verse “today I have completed your religion for you” was revealed about 80 days before Prophet Muhammad’s demise. It was revealed on the plains of Arafat during the Farewell Hajj pilgrimage, on Friday.
If you have even a little knowledge of Islam, you will know that the core pillars of religion are 5: Belief in One God, Salah (worship 5 times a day), Sawm (Fasting) , Zakah (charity) and Hajj (pilgrimage). The first 4 pillars of faith were well established within the Muslim community from before. As for Hajj, the prophet performed it only once, and that was at at the end of his life. This was the final pillar of Islam being established practically, hence COMPLETING the core tenets of the religion.
Any further verses that were revealed after this, contained topics that were already discussed in previously revealed verses, or contained jurisprudential laws regarding the peripheral matters of religion.
Finally, another relevant point made by scholars is that the ‘completion of religion’ was clearly not a reference to the completion of the Quran, but the completion of the establishment of religion on Earth. This is because before this Hajj of the prophet, the Hajj would be performed by the pagan polytheists who would worship idols whilst performing Hajj. However, the farewell Hajj (when this verse was revealed) was a manifestation of the establishment and dominance of monotheism on the earth, as not a single polytheist performed Hajj that day. This was a testimony that the mission of the prophet was now COMPLETE, in the sense that the oneness of God had been COMPLETELY established to such an extent that on that day, no polytheism occurred during the Hajj.
