Actually it is defined as lga sockets and the processor must have the same lga socket as motherboard, Intel 9th gen CPUs has lga 1151 and 12th Is 1700.
You can remove SSD or HDD containing OS and still pc will run unless there is no interaction between CPU and SSD because the entire OS pretty much runs in the ram once you boot up your pc.
As ram acts as your brain it reads and writes the memory and sends to other components as your brain that send signal to other organs, i once removed the ram and my pc didn't boot more like a "brain dead" 😂
