Treaty day June 1st 1868. Our Navajo people gathered the delegation that would sign and represent all our Diné. 12 people put their mark and entered into a peace treaty with the United States of America.
A treaty that would guarantee our people would fight no more. But instead live peacefully with the whites. Our Navajo people would allow them to construct railroads and pass through the land untouched.
In exchange for this our people could return to their land. Their home. At least a portion of it. Some land was taken… Taken because it had silver and gold. Our people also returned home knowing they would be able to hunt any unoccupied land. Their children would get education opportunities and learn from the whites. They would also be given livestock and healthcare.
The terms were discussed… Three different languages used to come up with the final treaty. Navajo Spanish and English. Today the treaty is an important document. It shows the world our people were not conquered instead they entered into an agreement with the mother nation. Maybe hoping to be equals... one day.
In this video Navajo Historian Wally Brown shares about the treaty. What the old ones used to say about it. How have our people lived up to it and how has the United States lived up to it.

many of them didnt care for the land, they were nomads and moved with the animals, and before europeans brought horses they would send herds off cliffs to shatter at the bottom, then dispatch them and take their food, bones and hide. But it sounds nice doesnt it. I suppose you could say that anyone without the ability to modify the land, through low technology, can be said to "care for the land".

My grandmother was cherokee. She spoke tsalagi. As a young boy, I spent summers with her and my illegal alien Norwegian grandfather while my parents traveled. Grandpa was an archaeologist. And we spent summers walking in the desert looking for artifacts.
I listen to my grandmother's stories and lessons. The one lesson that has always served well was when she told me to always look at the ground in front of my feet while I walk. You will never know what you will find that others walk over. I have found thousands of dollars over the years. And too many other treasures to count.

@IceLynne No disrespect to my grandpa. He just was an outlaw. My great-grandfather was a captain of a merchant ship out of Norway. My grandfather was sixteen and jumped ship in san francisco. He made his way to Barstow California to get a job working on the railroad. That's where he met my grandmother. By the time immigration caught up with him, he was already married and had a family, so they let him stay, but he never became a citizen. Grandpa went to university later in life and worked alongside of Doctor Leakey looking for the missing link at the early man site outside of Barstow ca.

“The most terrifying force of death comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. The moment the Men who wanted to be left alone are forced to fight back, it is a form of suicide. They are literally killing off who they used to be. Which is why, when forced to take up violence, these Men who wanted to be left alone, fight with unholy vengeance against those who murdered their former lives. They fight with raw hate, and a drive that cannot be fathomed by those who are merely play-acting at politics and terror. TRUE TERROR will arrive at these people’s door, and they will cry, scream, and beg for mercy… but it will fall upon the deaf ears of the Men who just wanted to be left alone.”

what is a rightful freedom? or restored sovereignty ? that is done by conquer, it has always been so, like the ojibwe did to the lakota, which caused the lakota to be forced out and move onto the plains where they did the same thing to half a dozen tribes, or the navajo did to the hopi and pueblos, etc. this is nothing new, and there is nothing "rightful", that is a nonsense term. People get conquered, everyone does and has for the history of mankind. There were people here before the current "natives" moved here via landbridge, where is their rightful land?

I knew about the Treaty of 1868 that applied to the Lakota; didn't know that in 1868 the Navajos were facing the same thing. From what I could tell, studying Winnebago History in 2004 on the reservation, there was an effort to pit the Great Sioux Nation against the Winnebagos and the Omahas. The same land was promised to all of the tribes. The US Government, one may assume, sat back to see which tribe would kill off the other tribe over the claim to the same land, and then -- problem solved. What they didn't expect was that the tribes worked things out with each other.
1868, the year of the Treaty, to my recollection, was the last year the Omahas went out on a buffalo hunt. No more buffalo hunting after that.

I learned and lived German for 2 years, and there are absolutely things that can be expressed in German, that make zero sense if translated to English. And the reverse is true too. And... it's true for any other language that you learn well. You will understand it when you're in that mindset, but switching to your mother tongue will rob the understanding.

I've studied German for nearly 30 years and Spanish since I was very young. These efforts have helped me understand many cultures that would have been completely lost on me if I couldn't understand the teachings.
I've started to learn Navajo and it's incredible. It's brought me great joy to know that I'm going to better understand the greatest culture of our land and our relationship with it.
I hope to teach all of these things to the younger generations and help them to understand what I have learned.
To be a great student, one must also be an honest teacher.

I love every video thank you 🙏 . I learned in Montana State University that there were 504 treaties that were signed between US and Native Tribes. US broke every single one, one way or another. I’m so ashamed of that. On another note: Look what the land of Israel was like in early 1900’s and compare it to today. The Israelites were laughed at when they moved into “that God forsaken place”. They planted millions of trees. "You take care of the land and it will take care of you".

It's stuff my grandfather mentioned as well. Emmanuelito, skirmish battles with the US in Norte Nuevo Mexico and S Colorado. Land grants that went to Mestizo families. So on so forth.

The Apache language was lost to them. The government did wrong! A life without freedom is not life. I wish I could speak Apache. I speak a little Spanish.

Seems like the Navajo community is the best equipped to handle sovereignty, but still vulnerable to slowly being absorbed into America. It will be interesting to see how they are able to address the same problems we are facing, while also dealing with the jeopardy of a neighboring colonial power.

Did you know that zuchinni stalks are hollow? It grows so good here, so you know of the stalks ever being used to make instruments? I have some in my freezer lol I'm just wondering

    • @debluetailfly
      @debluetailfly Před měsícem +2

I never examined a zuchinni stalk, but I have made cow sounds using a stalk from yellow squash, Cut the stalk as long as possible, then cut the leaf off so the cut is in the solid nodule. Cut a split in that leaf end of the stalk, and blow into it. Start with a short slit and lengthen it to produce the sound you want. You can also change the sound some by shortening the stalk.
