We sit down 1 on 1 with Chris Bova to hear his inspiring story of survival. A former Recon Marine and government contractor, Chris opens up and talks about combat, friends lost, and the darkness that followed.
He then tells us how he got out of that darkness and what we can do to help.
We are on a mission to lower the veteran suicide rate. Help us bring to light more conversations that are being had in the dark-shoot us an email thehiveveteranstories@gmail.com

The YT algoritme doesnt care about your political belief systems nor affliation, left or right. It'll recommend you whatever the fuck you're watching, even shit you're not subscribed to because that's just how it works. My homepage is filled with philosophy and military, and a bunch of weird shit like cat videos and random stories.
I have never liked nor disliked a video in 9 years though, so maybe that's the reason it seems "clean" to me.

That’s why it’s probably good to have a family of his own. I mean I never served but from a german perspective and what I got told about the people who took part in WWII they barely talked about it as well. The difference is that they took refuge having a caring wife and a family they had to feed.
The german military task force KSK also just lets married guys into their ranks from what I’ve heard because a partner apparently makes you a bit more mentally stable and you can cope better with the stuff you went through. On the other hand task forces operate behind enemy lines and usually in a stealthy fashion so they don’t get the same kind of brutal action you guys get :(

Greetings brother. I think you should check out this book called "Touching the Dragon" its about a buddy of mine and his own struggles with PTSD. I think it'll help you with nightmares you quite possibly still suffer from. Just remember something that I've learned after 13 years of combat and 19 years removed from my first experience. The nightmares will never truly leave you they'll just change. I wish you well brother. I'm sure you did great things for the UK and this world. I know a couple of lads at SBS and SAS. I'm telling you the book will change your life. Lastly I wanted to say forgiveness can really change everything for not just... but for us all.

I’m glad you touched on the shock of going on leave during your deployment. My first tour was in Iraq for 15 months with the 82nd Airborne. I was deployed for 10 months before going on leave for two weeks. Three days before getting on the plane to head to BIAP, my platoon lost two during a raid in Sadr City. I was told that I had to take leave. I would rather have stayed in Iraq then to go back and forth from California back to Iraq. Going from watching your platoon medic do everything he can to try and save two of our own to eventually losing them, then to be back in California around my family when I hadn’t processed any of it up to that point was hard to handle. I tried to kill myself when I returned from leave about two months after I got back to our JSS. I took my SAW when I was on shit burning detail by myself and stuck the barrel in my mouth. Our status was always amber at the JSS so when I went to fire the SAW into my mouth, the bolt was in the forward position and did not fire. I broke down that evening on all fours next to the pit where we burned our waste. I’ve never shared that story until now. That was in 2008. I finished two more deployments after that, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. I guess I wanted the enemy to kill me.

@@Nickat86 I appreciate your sentiment. However, don't benchmark what is more or less difficult to go through. That's a slippery slope that can marginalize what people are experiencing. People such as yourself with anxiety. It cheats you out of how it impacts your life. Anxiety, bluntly put, is motherfucker. If we benchmark it to someone else's experiences, then we could always find a way to invalidate what we are going through.
Here is my example: talking to a Korean War Vet, and I'm paraphrasing, "We fought until the bullets ran out. Then we fixed bayonets and fought until the blades were dull or broken. Then we fought hand-to-hand until we were dead or to tired to go on. It was then we looked up and saw 100,000 more Chinese coming over the hill." Now, my experience, compared to that, was just a walk in the park.

I’m going to study psychology in university next year, one of my goals have always been to create an effective system in helping war veterans deal with mental health. They fight for their country, but aren’t given the care they deserve when they return and adjust to civilian life. We have to remember that this Chris’s story is just one of the statistic and there are millions of others that share similar stories. The stigma behind PTSD needs to be dealt with, or we risk losing the individuals that fight for our freedom.

It tears me up listening to the stories of combat vets, every time. We watch what Hollywood considers a hero, but the reality is you guys are. My father-in-law (RIP) did 3 (yes, 3) tours in Viet Nam and I saw what that did to him. The innumerable sleepless nights of repeatedly reliving the horror in his dreams, the physical and emotional pain he suffered every damn day. Sadly, the effects of Agent Orange got him and he died due to having leukemia. However, it took a while for him to get help and eventually to get a diagnosis of PTSD, but even he said the support was really helpful, and this was a man that told, not even his own family, either what he witnessed, or about the commendations he received due to his bravery. I haven't been through what any of you have, but I will say this. First, you are all the most courageous people in our society, and the thanks we owe barely covers that debt. Second, I cannot stress this enough, never, and I mean never, be afraid to seek help. I cannot stand to hear how any one soldier can get to a place where they feel the only, and best, solution is suicide. Not after what you'll have been through. No, that is not an acceptable situation. Pick up that phone guys. It's not a sign of weakness, it doesn't emasculate you, there is no stigma. And I guarantee this, you will not be the only one in your brotherhood who wants to, and you may give someone else the courage to do the same.

I'm grateful to have found your video. While I'm not a veteran or someone who has served, I am someone who is the son of a Vietnam Veteran who took his life when I was 24 - I'm 42 today. I sadly was the one who found my dad and I still cannot get the images of that day out of my head. While I cannot relate to combat PTSD, I certainly can relate to what PTSD does to the human mind. All I want to know, is how can I help? What can I do? I want for the children of veterans of today to live a full life with their dads and moms and never have to go through what I did. Losing my dad really messed me up, and still takes a great emotional toll on my soul to this very day. I'm not someone looking for attention or anything like that. I just want to help in any way I can.

As a former Marine who’s deployed multiple times I tell retired or not that we chose to enlist we chose to stay 8 or 20 years we accepted our jobs. It’s not easy for veterans but veteran groups should take trips to ghettos where kids live horrific upbringings but had no choice or escape. Again someone who grew up in Newark NJ projects during the crack epidemic. To say you can’t compare is trying to blow smoke up our own ass. Suffering is suffering especially when your born in misery.

I’m going into the Army Guard for infantry in the summer and I have dreams of becoming a Ranger... I want to cherish these moments that I’ve lived in the past 22 years of my life so that I know what it is like to be around family whenever I come back from a deployment. I have so much respect for you brother. Thank you Marine.

Sadly, the 22 a day suicide numbers are rather skewed. As only 21 states report this. So chances are, it's a lot higher than that. Perhaps into the 50s... Every day.

It's a marketing skeme. There's not many vets killing themselves

O... K. Walk me through this, break it down shotgun style, why would they harness such a thing for advertising? "Hey, so many guys get fucked up about the horrors of war that they kill themselves at 22 men per day in only 21 states... Join the Marine Corps and you could be like that too!" Doesn't really have an... Inspiring ring to it.

You are never alone. Remember brother, it's easy to find a reason to quit. Find that one reason to keep going, to fight, to keep on going.

The impact of videos like this is how completely human, real, and vulnerable these guys are. "Marine" is about training; it only goes so deep. These people are human before they're anything else.
